O’Neill goes back to its coastal roots with this Apple Bomb bag, a tote that looks perfect for the beach.

This is no high end tote, but it’s not made to be. The printed cotton canvas is very busy, especially with the patterned double taping shoulder straps. But we all know you can get away with something a little louder when you’re on the sand. However I think O’Neill may have gone a step too far with the gaudy sequined flower accent, which just doesn’t really match the rest of the purse. It seems to add bling for bling’s sake, which will only appeal to the flashiest of fashionistas.

The interior is simple but more functional than the average beach bag. The magnetic snap gives us a bit more security, and the zippered wall pocket offers a convenient place for storing valuables. That’s the only pocket we have, but I don’t mind that too much as beach bags tend to hold more big, bulky items than small bits and pieces.

It probably too showy to carry away from the sea shore, but for an affordable $35.95 I don’t mind the Apple Bomb’s limitations.

Fall may be setting in, but Tod’s is already looking ahead to warmer weather. It recently unveiled some beautiful new bags for spring.

For the second year, Tod’s chief Diego Della Valle chose to show the bags in the suitably luxurious setting of Villa Necchi in Milan. These purses, designed by the brand’s creative director Derek Lam, have a breezy Mediterranean feel. The handbags are all about quality materials, whether it’s a plain vachetta leather or an exotic crocodile or python skin.

The 24H and Shirt purses are already earmarked to be spring’s It bags. The 24H is a softly structured, minimalist tote that Lam says offers “chic practicality.” It’s deliberately free of hardware, an approach that shows the designer is a man after my own heart.

“I desire luxury but I have no need for status symbols,” he told WWD.

The Shirt bag has a deconstructed shape, with supple leather which allows it to be folded and unfolded when traveling.

I’m most excited to hear that there’s much more where these accessories came from. Lam has just renewed his contract with Tod’s, so he’ll be with the firm for at least another two years.

You probably won’t expect much from a satchel playfully named the Plain Jane, but this Nine West bag is one that might surprise you.

Sure it doesn’t scream the loudest or have all the bells and whistles of those designer It bags, but it’s a bit more exciting than its Plain Jane tag suggests. It may be made from synthetic, but the large crocodile scale texture and rich brick red tone give it a bit of personality. No one would ever mistake it for an authentic exotic, but it does add interest to the bag’s simple retro shape.

The design is a bit too busy for my tastes up top, with a belt competing with a heart-shaped charm, logo nameplate and handle hardware for attention, but that’s all a matter of personal preference.

There’s no faulting the design on a practical level though. Its interior is generously sized and equipped with wall pockets for your cell phone and other small gadgets. The nylon lining admittedly looks a bit cheap, but I can forgive that because it’s so easy to clean. We also have the choice of dual rolled shoulder straps or an attachable cross-body strap when we’re on the go.

For $95, we can also add affordable to this satchel’s description. Surely something so stylish, practical, and recession friendly never deserves to be called plain!

Be & D’s creative director Steve Dumain is launching a brand new accessories line through home shopping network QVC. But he insists that Roccatella isn’t a sister range to Be & D, but an entirely new collection.

“Selling on QVC is such a nice opportunity to reach a different woman,” Dumain told StyleList. “This line is for a modern, chic woman who wants the feeling of a particular trend, but without too much of that trend.“

Dumain may have named Roccatella after his 98-year-old grandmother, but he’s not looking to reach the elderly fashion sector with these purses. Instead they’re aimed at a more mature woman who still knows how to have fun.

She’ll have nine different handbags to choose from, including satchels, hobos, and totes. Each is made from quality calfskin, and kitted out with convenient front pockets, polished hardware, pocket mirrors, and key leashes. That’s a whole lot of value considering these purses retail between $200 and $300. It’s really hard to see why the Be & D bags cost so much more, isn’t it?

Roccatella will make its debut on QVC on Thursday at 7 pm before being rolled out to other retailers in spring 2011.

Nina Ricci helps you add a little luxury to your everyday with this elegant Ondine Gator shoulder bag.

As you might have guessed from the name, that exotic finish comes not from an embossed leather or even the more commonly used crocodile but alligator. At first glance it can be difficult to differentiate between the two reptilian skins, but alligator is always regarded as superior amongst fashion circles. Its scales are more symmetrical, and its hide softer. It’s that plush feeling that sees you pay $9500 for the privilege of carrying this beauty.

But if you can afford it, I don’t think you’ll ever regret owning the Ondine. Nina Ricci calls its pale color gray beige, but there are also hues of pink and ivory in there as well. It’s such an intriguing shade, yet one which would easily slot into any wardrobe. The golden rope handle completes the look of luxury.

This really is a bag that’s all about keeping up appearances, but it’s not as impractical as so many luxury accessories. The size is ideal for everyday use; it’s not as large as many bags on the market, but it has the stuff to handle all the things you really need. The fabric lined interior is fitted with two small pockets for keeping your personal technology safe.

It’s much too rich for my blood, but if you’re looking for a status bag the Ondine will fit the bill.

Reed Krakoff’s departure from Coach spawned an onslaught of speculation and excitement. Most people were sure that he would surpass his work at Coach with his own line, and they were right. The quality of Krakoff’s materials and craftsmanship isn’t even in the same universe as the mall vendor. This leather ribbon tote is a great example of his work.

The gray-green leather strips that make up this tote are sleek, and piecing them together in this way gives the bag a little extra texture and dimensionality, while still retaining its minimal aesthetic. The color is a very olive-gray that will go with almost everything.

The design of this tote is what’s really striking. I’m not ordinarily a fan of expensive totes. I prefer the cheap canvas ones. But this minimal iconoclast is perfect. The leather ribbons give it a bit of detail, but overall it’s pared down and ultra-chic.

If only the price for such minimal luxury weren’t so high. At $890, I find this bag to be overpriced. It’s fully lined and of very lovely quality, but it’s still just a tote.

One of my favorite things about the Marc by Marc Jacobs line is the way it moves from ultra-hip to super preppy all within the same season without sacrificing any of its signature style. That, and the prices are notoriously good for the designer market. This gorgeous Dot Perfect purse lives up to my highest expectations for the brand beautifully.

The combination of supple black suede and blingy gold beading has a decidedly 90s feel to it. It has a quirky classy look that walks the line of tastefulness, but stays just this side of tacky. I love the subtle variations in the diagonal beaded design; they give the Dot Perfect a lot of dimension.

The small, squarish shape is great for a cross body bag. Its structure makes it look a little more grown up and dressed up than a lot of the slouchier options out there, and its size keeps it comfortable. The chain and leather strap is a cool, refined touch.

At $280, the Dot Perfect is basically irresistible. Even if it won’t go with everything you own, it’s still worth the price.

Wow. This is quite a clutch. Ed Hardy has pulled out all the stops to make this dramatic and obvious synthetic leather purse.

With a bold red patent body, wavy and noticeable shape, and quirky tattoo styled applique decoration, this isn’t going to be to everyone’s tastes. Any bag that is this bright is bound to divide the crowd, and unfortunately I come down on the side of dislike. However, fans of tattoo-esque art and blood red vibrancy may enjoy incorporating this into rockabilly or steam-punk inspired outfits.

As for the clutch itself, it is pretty standard for a small purse design. The adjustable strap and zip closure give it a boost in the practicality stakes, and you probably wouldn’t be disappointed from this approach. However, for $80 I would want real leather, as the synthetic version looks a little tackier.

The Sochi purse with its unusual quilting definitely doesn’t let anything restrain it!

In my opinion a sign of a really elegant handbag is one that doesn’t have to use over the top decoration to demonstrate that it is luxurious. The Noa tote from Botkier is one such purse, employing the time honored technique of delicate folding to make it look great.

The shape is traditional, in that it has room for all your folders and vital belongings. You know, the sort that you are unable to leave at home, and which instead you drag around with you in your poor over-used bag. However, the spacious shape doesn’t mean it is outdated, as Botkier has given it a modern twist with the visible zipped pockets.

As well as being useful and offering more storage, the zips tend to give this leather tote a more edgy and fashionable vibe. Combine that with the unusual coral orange and you have a subtle yet effective eye-catcher. For me this is the best of both worlds, although conservative offices may still manage to take issue with the bright and happy color.

This is a cute yet expensive purse from a designer who rarely lets us down.

Given its name you might expect this Moschino hobo to channel 80s retro style, but this ruched purse is rooted firmly in the modern world.

The name comes not from a lot of color and flash, but the dramatic waves of ruched leather. These tiny pleats are held in place by small studs along the top of the bag. I’ve never seen studs used in this way, sparingly and with almost a practical purpose rather than as a decorative feature to add edge.

The gentle pleats are something new but beneath it all this really is a classic hobo, with a crescent shape and relaxed slouch. Its base is a bit flatter, which should make packing and unpacking it a bit easier, but its lack of structure will never make it completely user-friendly. But the interior does feel luxurious, with plenty of space and a sumptuous satin lining. A long shoulder strap helps to complete this versatile, leather bag.

This is a bag that could easily work for any occasion, in a fashionable office environment or on weekends off. But it’s certainly not as affordable as we might expect from a line called Cheap & Chic. I’m sure even the most extravagant of spenders would never call $945 cheap.
