Wow. This spotty furry purse isn’t what I am used to seeing from the usually sophisticated Kate Spade brand! The cutely named “Cat’s Meow” cross-body is the brand’s nod to this season’s fur obsession, and a fun one it is too.

I don’t hate this. This fact shocks me, as usually the moment they feel the need to make a bag out of fur (whether faux or not) I can’t get away fast enough. However, maybe it is the gentle pleating, or maybe it is the vintage over-sized clasp – but something has made me actually quite like this silly design! I am not sure if it would convince all my friendly animal print hating friends, but it will certainly give it a damn good try.

The bag itself continues the cuteness, moving on from the leopard print to a pretty spotty interior. The class is apparent here too, and it is clear that from the chain and hardware to the lining, Kate Spade has done her best to ensure that this looks classy.

Winter is here (well, almost), and with it comes the warm, heavy and gorgeous fabrics that cold mortals know and love. To accompany them, you need a gorgeous handbag, and this beautiful velvet purse form Menbur meets the bill.

Despite the simple shape, this bag is thoroughly decadent. The rich plum velvet contrasts against the matt gray trim, and then the whole thing is capped off with a smattering of coordinating sequins and beads. Immediately it looks luxurious and wintry, and I can imagine it accompanying you to many evening events. Even better, you can wear a heavy wool coat with this and not look silly.

To continue the luxurious theme, this inside of this Menbur evening bag in lined in a rich plum stain. Everything about this makes you want to stroke and caress it, although I admit that the fabrics will need care to keep them looking at their best.

Still, this gorgeously decorated purse is a reasonable $93, and I think that is well worth the dosh.

As the weather cools we’re all starting to rug up, and it seems so are our handbags! This Maison Martin Margiela Shearling Shoulder Bag looks like it’s well and truly ready for winter!

The simply designed black leather bag is given some personality with fuzzy shearling trim and handles. They’re interesting accents, but I don’t really get them. Perhaps it comes from living in Australia, but I associate this fabric with comfy slippers worn at home rather than luxury fashions.

I might not mind a bit of shearling on a bargain basement bag, but not on a purse that costs almost $1500. For that price I expect real luxury, and I personally think this cozy look is far from that. What do you think?

Strip away the external shearling and this isn’t a bad bag, even if it is a little boring. The shearling lined compartment will feel lovely to use. Perhaps you could even hide your hands inside it if you forget your gloves! This generously sized space probably needs more than the single zippered pocket to stay organized, but at least we’ve got somewhere to hide our valuables.

For this price though, I don’t want to make excuses and forgive missteps. I want something fabulous, and this shoulder bag just doesn’t cut the mustard.

Booq’s laptop bags and backpacks can always be relied on for practicality, but their bright orange flashes and futuristic finishes aren’t exactly appropriate for conservative workplaces. So I’m thrilled to see the brand offering something a little more sedate with its new Cobra collection.

The Cobra bags are ever bit and durable and functional as the rest of the Booq range, but they’re much more sophisticated. The exteriors are made from 1680 denier ballistic nylon which is coated with a water-resistant material for those surprise showers. The modern metal hardware has an edgy gun metal finish.

And they only get more luxurious inside. Each bag is lined with Nappa leather for that extra bit of style.

Booq has initially released four shoulder and messenger style bags priced between $145 and $345. Hopefully we’ll see a backpack joining the collection really soon. Until then, you can find the Cobra bags at Booq retailers and the brand’s online store.

The old saying that the simplest things are often the best definitely applies to this lovely little purse from Magid.

It’s not very luxurious, but there’s something so appealing about its clean look and minimalist style. The body is made from woven paper straw. This fabric is one of Magid’s favorites, and why not? It looks fun and summery, and its tight weave makes it more resilient than you might expect.

This gentle rose pink body is paired with a natural toned wooden handle. I love the retro look this gives, and so long as you don’t load the purse up its smooth finish should make it quite comfortable to carry. It’ll never be as convenient as an over-the-shoulder strap, but sometimes we sacrifice practicality for looks, don’t we?

And honestly, for a mere $35 I’m willing to make a few sacrifices to carry this affordably chic purse. Are you?

At New York Fashion Week, the style we see in the crowds is often just as exciting as the looks on the runway. This year the event introduced us to Cecelia clutches, which seemed to be in the hands of every hot young celebrity.

Actresses Alexis Bledel, Emmy Rossum, Rachel Bilson, and Zoe Saldana were just some of the stars spotted clutching the exotic purses. And honestly, I don’t blame them. With prices ranging between $525 and $790, the Connecticut-based designer offers exotics at much more affordable prices than the big European fashion houses.

There are a range of skins to choose from including python, stingray, and ostrich. Many are also more versatile than the average clutch, such as Rachel Bilson’s favorite convertible clutch which can be hand-held the old fashioned way or worn across the body with a removable chain.

So many celebrity fashions are too expensive for Average Josephines to contemplate, so I love seeing the stars embracing a range that’s within our reach. Cecelia clutches are available from a range of American retailers and Madison Robertson and Diavolina online.

It’s a little bit naughty and a little bit nice, just as all women are. Meet the Sugar Skulls Lucky Me kisslock handbag.

The Lucky Me bag is one of Lux de Ville’s best sellers, with is cool retro shape and girlish red rose. But the Sugar Skulls, who are far from sweet, bring a new edginess to this design. Their metallic outline really pops against the black velvet background, creating a dramatic appearance which wouldn’t look out of place in the stables of Ed Hardy or Christian Audigier.

And just as the accessories from these designers do, this Lux de Ville bag is destined to divide opinion. I’m sure almost as many bagistas will shun its edgy design as those who embrace it.

But at $62.95, at least this bag doesn’t cost as much as the purse’s from those big name designers. It likely doesn’t have their quality either, with many customers complaining about the synthetic peeling and the rose fraying. Treat it with kid gloves if you expect this purse to look good for a few seasons, or be prepared to trade it in for a new model before long!

Burberry Prorsum is traditionally one of my favorite accessory lines. Their edgy, experimental aesthetic is right up my alley. But, sometimes they go a little over the top. Although I have loved some of the other bags in the Cadet line, I’m not sure whether they’ve taken things too far this time or not.

The tan leather is an interesting choice of material for this bag. It’s got such a downtown edginess to it that it seems like it would look a little more natural in black. In tan it has a little more crossover appeal in that women who aren’t ordinarily “edgy” might like it as well, but personally, I think the color dilutes the style a little too much in this case.

The shape is great. I am really loving these petite Cadet bags with their curvy handles. But in this case, I think the smoothness of the handle contrasts too much with the overall studded surface of the bag. While we’re on the topic of the studs, aren’t there just a few too many of them? Or perhaps they’ve just tried to incorporate too many shapes and colors of studs. Either way, the effect is a little confusing.

This really doesn’t look like a $1,695 handbag. It isn’t exotic or particularly well thought out, and I am feeling pretty disappointed about it. Better luck next time, Burberry.

Mulberry’s meticulous minimalism and high quality craftsmanship have given them a reputation that rivals the finest luxury goods makers. This Edna mini shoulder bag certainly doesn’t disappoint the expectations that the line has set for themselves.

The camel colored leather on the Edna is smooth and finely textured. The bright glossy gold of the hardware sets the color off beautifully, and is finely chosen and gorgeous in its own right. I also really like how small and inconspicuous the Mulberry tree logo is on the Edna, it looks natural and perfectly placed.

The Edna has a great pouch shape that is getting more popular these days. I can see why. It’s a cute look, and it creates more volume in a small space. And while the Edna is meant to be a shoulder bag, it’s just about the perfect size and shape to wear across the body, another very trendy look.

With the Edna, you get the best of both worlds. You get classic versatility and also an up-to-date, modern looking accessory. Not bad for $950.

Some people may say that the delicate lace and gentle nude coloring is too last season. However, I maintain that the Brussels evening bag from Inge Christopher can actually work really well with this A/W’s catwalk of leather and sheepskin.

You see, there is nothing prettier than a delicate girlie fabric contrasted against a strong tough material. For whatever reason, it just works. In addition, the gold detailing on this lace gives you something to work with for the dark winter evenings, making this a really elegant head turner.

Of course, there are problems with lace. It is fragile, and over-using this purse will no doubt run the risk of damaging it. It is also not to everyone’s tastes, and effort will need to be exerted to ensure you don’t end up looking like your grandmother’s doily. Done well, however, it could look gorgeous!
