Bottega Veneta has put out a fabulous fall collection of handbags. They are rendered in a deep, rich color palette with small, sophisticated details like braiding. This metallic blue shoulder bag is another great addition to the growing collection of modern classics.

I haven’t ever really been a big fan of metallics. They’re just a little showy and ostentatious for my personal taste. But this deep blue leather has a softly metallic sheen that is subtle and beautiful. Perhaps the gently crinkled and worn texture of the bag absorbs some of the metallic’s impact and gives it the more sophisticated look that it has.

The shape of the bag is also elegant, despite its giant size. It’s hard for such an over-sized bag to keep from looking clunky, but this one manages to do so. The braided details at the edges of the bag make it seem smaller than it is, although if you wanted to, you could probably use it as an overnighter. The braiding is continued on the strap, which gives the bag a sleek, integrated look.

At $2,950, this bag is definitely an investment. But its versatile color and style make it a wise one.

Ralph Lauren has opened the doors of his New York City women’s flagship store. The boutique, located at 888 Madison Avenue, is a complement to the men’s flagship store which stands in the historic Rhinelander Mansion across the street.

The women’s store is every bit as grand as its masculine counterpart, with four storeys and 22, 000 square footage influenced by the Beaux-Arts architecture of the early 20th century. Inside you’ll find the label’s women’s and homewares collections, along with the first domestic watch and jewelry salon. The regular lines will sit alongside store exclusives including fine jewelry, customized women’s suits, and sleepwear.

With a pigeon pair of flagship stores it seems Ralph Lauren loves New York City, and it appears that the admiration is mutual. Mayor Michael Bloomberg attended the official opening and handed Lauren the key to the city to recognize his contributions to business, philanthropy, and design.

Stella McCartney’s dedication to animal rights is admirable. In her career as a designer, she has never used animal products. This has garnered her a lot of environmentally-conscious fans, but sometimes her designs suffer as a result of her use of synthetic materials.

The problem with the embossed dark green faux leather that makes up this bag is that it looks just like what it is: fake. It has an awkward, plastic-y appearance that just isn’t successful. While it holds the shape of the bag nicely, it just looks cheap. McCartney has done better with the faux patent on the strap, which looks remarkably more authentic.

If you can get over the look of the material, the actual design of the bag is pretty interesting. The dual flap front opens onto a single main compartment. I can’t decide whether it would have been nicer to divide it or not. On the one hand, it gives you easy access to the main compartment, but on the other, it’s a little bit strange. It makes me feel weirdly paranoid that the bag isn’t secure.

As usual, I am amazed by how much Ms. McCartney thinks it’s okay to charge for her bags. For $1,050, I expect quite a bit more than cheap pleather and under-thought design.

Cherries! These gorgeous 1950s cherries make these little cosmetics and travel purses a lovely retro addition to any holiday.

Nick & Nora generally tend to produce purses that are intended more for function than fabulousness. However, the fun decorations mean that the functional plastic fabric becomes something a lot prettier. You wouldn’t feel bad packing this inside your suitcase. In fact, you would probably get them out as soon as possible. In my mind, that is a pretty makeup bag!

So, what about the practicalities? There isn’t anything particularly remarkable about the affordable East West set, and I would perhaps like a few more compartments to store all of my goodies. Still you get a nice little matching mirror, and the cute cherry zip pulls are trying their darnedest to persuade me to buy them! So maybe I will.

Fickle? Me? Never!

You can’t really get simpler than this Robert Clergerie tote!

With it’s incredibly smooth leather body and minimalist amount of seaming, the Tontoutax tote couldn’t be plainer. However, thanks to the deep matte black leather, the effect is one of luxury rather than absence. In essence, you have such a beautiful expanse of luxury blackness that you wouldn’t want it interrupted by trinkets and decoration.

As such, the only decoration on this leather tote bag is the perforation. The corners and the base of this large bag feature little round holes, adding texture and interest without detracting from the over-all bucket shape. I like it, personally, and think that the slightly rocky vibe will work well with this season’s trends.

The limitations, of course, are in the price. This perforated tote is $800, and that makes a simple bag into something entirely different. OK, so black never goes out of fashion, but is such a plain handbag a real investment? Is it classic enough, or is the curved shape just too modern?

If you don’t like color, it’s safe to say that this wallet isn’t for you. There are four designs to choose from, but each one has a kaleidoscope of vibrant shades all clashing together delightfully. I think the look is funky and playful, but that won’t be enough to consider more conservative bagistas to take a risk. Even if it will spend most of its life tucked away inside a larger tote!

The lively coated canvas won me over, but I must admit I felt a bit disappointed once I peeked inside. The zippered interior is secure, but it’s not as full of features as many most wallets. There’s no clear window for a photo ID or happy snap, and only a handful of credit card slots. That might suit the frugal fashionistas out there, but the rest of us probably have credit cards, checking accounts, and store loyalty cards galore!

Then again, perhaps Tepper Jackson is attempting to capture those fashion fans still smarting from the recession. At just $40, this Calypso wallet is an affordable way to carry your cash.

The Windsors aren’t the only British royals; Temperley London’s Royal Clutch sets out to be every bit as regal.

I’m not quite sure that it succeeds though. It’s quite lovely, but I’m not sure that it has the same sense of pomp and ceremony that we saw in Mulberry’s Margaret clutch. Perhaps if I didn’t have that gorgeous purple creature to compare it to I might feel a little more positive, but this basic black number just doesn’t appear as commanding.

Perhaps it’s best to simply see this clutch as it is, a small accessory with a few really interesting features. The gold piping is lovely, and a great complement to those textured gold buttons. I’m not sure how comfortable they’ll feel when you’re clutching the Royal old-fashioned style, but at least there’s a detachable shoulder strap if your fingers are a bit sensitive.

The interior also delivers more than your average clutch purse. It’s not excessively large, but it’s divided and it has enough slots to hold 10 credit card slots. I’ve never thought of taking a clutch purse to the mall, but Temperley London has made me change my mind!

The $695 price tag seems a bit rich, but this is a Royal after all!

Mulberry for Target handbags have landed at Target department stores across America, and they’re flying off the shelves almost as quickly as they arrived.

This is a really impressive capsule collection, which manages to deliver exactly what we love about the British brand. Of course, there isn’t quite the same level of luxury, but the fabrics don’t feel like cheap imitations either. They range from classic blue denim and black velvet to more flamboyant patent pink leopard synthetic.

If you’ve always coveted Mulberry handbags but couldn’t afford them, this limited edition range from Target is well worth exploring. There’s everything from elegant satchels to cross-body bags and totes, and the most they cost is $49.99. In fact, some are even as cheap as $14.99!

I wouldn’t wait very long to snap one up though. The bags are intended to be available through to December 24, but the way they’re currently selling I doubt they’ll be around that long!

Mulberry for Target Bags on eBay

This Dancing with the Star tote might not have the razzle dazzle of Jennifer Grey or Audrina Partridge, but in this bright Blue Hawaiian shade it’s still got what it takes to turn heads.

Tano is one of those brands that sticks to its creative vision, so if you’re familiar with the label you’re not like to be too surprised by this offering. The crunch leather is Tano’s favorite material, and as always it’s offset by deep chocolatey trim and brushed antique hardware.

That commitment to familiar styles is both a blessing and a curse. This tote isn’t likely to offend anyone, but it also doesn’t quite stand out the way a bag with such a playful moniker should.

It does the job though, and does it well for its $298 price tag. It’s got all the space we ask for in an everyday handbag and a more functional design than we might expect at this price point. A zippered envelope separates the interior into three easy to use sections, while zip and slip pockets on the sides help keep small items just where you left them.

I’m not sure the Dancing with the Star’s inviting blue shade is enough to convince me to part with my cash, but its clever design just might.
