Lauren Merkin has gone much more over-the-top than normal with the Astrid tote.

The multi-colored snakeskin will be a bit too “out there” for some people. The bold and obviously exotic pattern, you see, is just made all the more outrageous thanks to the array of colors weaving their way throughout. As a combination of both texture and brightness, this is the sort of bag that will on the one hand catch people’s attention, but on the other hand put quite a lot of people off.

Whilst the “Serpent” element of this rainbow tote isn’t my favorite look, I have to profess to liking the shape of the bag. It is soft and flexible, with plenty of space for all sorts of things. It is even the sort of tote that has room for your books and diary. Thankfully this decent capacity is supported by a flat and comfortable leather handle, which will sit neatly on your shoulder.

Although for $425 you might expect actual snakeskin rather than patterned leather, this is still a luxurious and exotically creative purse.

Yak Pak brings practical design and color into one compact package with this vibrant Lil Cross-Body bag.

I love the colored checkerboard print of this particular Lil, but it’s just one of the many designs we have to choose from. Most of them are every bit as vibrant and playful, but if you prefer a more classic look this handbag is also available in basic black. With its simple flap design I feel it’d lose a bit of personality in such a sedate tone, but if you’ve got a conservative workplace it could be just what you need.

As with all the Yak Pak accessories, this Lil packs a lot of value into its relatively small design. There’s a side pocket on the outside, and two handy open pockets inside. I wish one of these compartments had a clasp so we could use it for carrying valuables, but at least the main compartment has a Velcro closure.

For the price though it’s hard to get too critical. $16 doesn’t buy much these days, but it does buy this small cross-body bag.

Black Rose Bags can see the beauty in the materials the rest of us discard.

XOXO wants to romance you with this feminine and fun Beau tote.

This purse reminds me of the label’s Name Drop clutch, but on a much larger scale. It’s not just the size that gives it its point of difference, but a soft bow on the side. The accent could have been overly feminine, but it’s tempered here by the use of black vinyl.

Looking at the Beau it’s pretty easy to see XOXO has used vinyl, rather than real leather, which is a bit of a disappointment. At nearly $70 this tote isn’t overly expensive, but I’ve seen more convincing leather alternatives at this price point.

The Beau’s generous size is both a blessing and a curse. Of course it allows us to carry everything we need to make it through the day. The open and zippered pockets are up to the task of keeping all those items in order too. But while the interior isn’t lacking, the handle isn’t up to the task. While the cut-out design is very fashionable, this tote is bound to be awkward to carry once it’s full. A removable cross-body strap would have easily solved the problem.

This Beau tote isn’t perfect, but at $69.99 it does enough to tempt frugal fashionistas.

Whiting & Davis bring a little retro edge to its iconic mesh handbags with this Liquid Chain cross-body bag.

The shape of the mesh purse is traditional and simple, but it’s the detail that really sets it apart. Silvery metal chains hang in an asymmetrical curtain from the top of the bag, giving it dramatic depth and disco style. All that metal may seem a bit much for some folks, but I think it strikes the right balance between glitz and gaudy.

It might be a cross-body purse, but don’t think it’ll afford you much more space than an ordinary clutch. This is a delicate little thing, so as with most evening bags we really are restricted to the bare essentials.

The cross-body strap is removable so you can theoretically convert it to a clutch, but I’m not sure how practical that would be. I can imagine my fingers getting caught in all those chains, which would never be a good look. I think we’re much better erring on the side of caution and letting the fringe hang without interference.

For $140 this liquid chain cross-body purse is a great way to add some disco style to your evening ensemble.

Roberto Cavalli’s current collection includes a lot of decadent materials and heavy embroidery. Some of the bags have seemed unwieldy and over-the-top, but this one is a little more subdued and sophisticated. It’s a lot more wearable, and a lot more reasonably priced than others have been.

The material of this bag is a rich brown suede adorned with baroque golden embroidery. It has a boho luxe sensibility that is extravagant, but not pretentious. Bohemian styles often go a little too far by way of decoration, and particularly Cavalli’s bohemian styles, but this one stays just this side of sophisticated.

The pouch shape has just enough structure to balance out the complexity of the embroidery. Ordinarily, the tassels on the sides might seem like just a tad too much, but here they blend in seamlessly. The braided strap complements the complex design beautifully.

Lanvin’s Amalia bags are modern classics. The line is refreshingly simple and elegant. This gorgeous snakeskin version adds luxe glamour to the sophisticated style in a heavy dose.

The extraordinary turquoise and black python skin has a soft metallic finish that, in combination with the eye-catching color combination, makes it stand out in any crowd. Lanvin has custom-dyed this bag to complement the natural variations in the skin, and the effect is a look that is startlingly unique.

Lanvin hasn’t changed the traditional Amalia shape, but even though I haven’t liked it that much in the past, I think it really works with this material. The strap has changed slightly, though. The ribbon and chain link strap the line is known for has been replaced with a slim leather one. It’s a good choice on a bag that could easily go over-the-top.

The popular Amalia line hasn’t been one of my Lanvin favorites, but this version makes me feel differently.

New Yorkers will get the first bite at Roger Vivier’s ultra exclusive new Rendez-Vous capsule collection. There are just nine shoe styles and nine handbags in the line, produced in limited editions of only ten.

The rare collection sees the label’s creative director Bruno Frisoni meld traditional artisan work with natural materials like feathers, wood, and straw. Frisoni was also influenced by the works of colorful painters Jean Dubuffet and Gotthard Graubner, and the natural beauty of the animal kingdom.

“[The black-and-white Pilgrim clutch uses] a leaf of wood that is glued on fabric,” Frisoni told AOL’s fashion blog StyleList. “It’s so strong [and flexible] you can use it as a fabric. It’s amazing!“

I also particularly like the way conservative, earth shades are paired with flashes of bright color, and the whimsical animal shaped handbag clasps!

The collection was unveiled at New York’s Saks Fifth Avenue store on October 19. It will later travel to Roger Vivier’s New York Boutique before making stops in Miami and Los Angeles. After that it’s off to Europe and Asia, if there are any items left! After all, with just ten of each accessory made they’re not likely to last very long!

The price is likely to be the sticking point for many of us though. The exclusivity of this line at least doubles the value of the Roger Vivier goodies; the shoes are priced between $1900 and $4200, while the handbags cost between $5000 and a whopping $15, 000!
