Evening bags need a little glitz and glamor, and this BCBG Max Azria clutch offers plenty of both.

The glitz comes in the form of that metallic silver body, the satin of which is enhanced brilliantly by the unusual geometric plates that cover the front. They give a hint of gladiator style, whilst at the same time remaining deliciously suitable for fancy parties and the like. And if that is the glitz, the glamor is afforded by the teeny tiny delicate beading, an unusual combination with those brave metal plates.

Other than the decoration, this neat little clutch is pretty simple. It does what it says on the tin, and all it lacks is a long handle to make the whole thing just a little bit practical. Still, I presume practicality isn’t really on the cards with a purse this pretty!

I fell instantly for the gorgeous jungle green leather of this shoulder bag, but there’s a lot more to love about this BCBG Max Azria purse than its pretty color.

This leather works well with the delicate silver turn-lock clasp and buckled shoulder strap. The design has a fun vintage flair which can bring a classic feel to your contemporary wardrobe. The style isn’t very cutting edge, but it won’t fall out of favor as quickly as one that follows the trends.

This is a mid-sized purse, but packrats probably shouldn’t let that scare them. The deep open pocket hidden underneath the flap gives some unexpected storage space. The internal pockets are also trimmed in leather, so they should stack up to whatever you can throw at them.

Handbag designers take note. This is not how you do patchwork. This is not how you treat expensive exotic materials. This Balmain Rock Leather and Crocodile Patchwork Shoulder Bag is, in short, a lesson in what not to do.

Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh, but this Balmain bag just makes no sense to me. Its materials are first class, but cut into irregular swatches and surrounded by sequins they just look cheap. Given this purse’s name I suppose Balmain was shooting for a rock and roll, devil may care attitude but I think it missed the mark.

It only looks cheap though, my friends. This Balmain bag comes in at more than $8000. That’s a lot of money to spend on any exotic accessory, but when the precious skins are chopped up as they are here it’s downright absurd.

If you’re searching for reasons to throw your money away on this you might look to the rich looking golden chain straps. You might salivate over the black satin lining, and appreciate all the space this bag affords. You might even gaze wistfully at the cute B zipper pull on the interior pocket.

You know I’m clutching at straws. You can find all those kind of perks on a more attractive and more affordable bag. Sorry Balmain, there’s nothing for us here.

Some of our favorite handbag designers are in a spot of bother with the tax man. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, of Dolce & Gabbana fame, have been indicted on tax evasion charges.

The fashionable pair allegedly moved $569 million a piece to a holding company in the tax haven of Luxembourg between 2004 and 2006. That’s a lot of It bags worth! It’s unsure at this time whether the label will pay a fine or attempt to weasel out of the charges altogether.

Personally I think they’ll pick the former option. I’m sure they don’t want the inevitable spotlight glare that would come from a lengthy legal trial, or the greater fine they could receive of $1 billion if they’re found guilty.

Then again, the Italian duo have denied any wrongdoing so perhaps they’ll fight this thing on principle.

A Milan-based source claims that “in many cases, this kind of accusation stems from the different interpretation of regulations. The state, which often doesn’t get to big-time tax evaders, tries to get to those who already pay their taxes, and ends up collecting one from the original 100 demanded.“

With Christmas just around the corner, I’m struggling to resist the festive charms of this beautiful Pearls of Wisdom wristlet from Mary Frances.

In typical Mary Frances style, this is a purse that doesn’t do things by halves. It reminds me more of an ornament that I might hang from my tree than one I’d strap around my wrist. But that might make it perfect for carrying to your Christmas parties.

This really is a thing of beauty, with pretty silvery pearls organized into delicate flowers. More pearls make the elegant bow which hangs above the bauble. I’m glad Mary Frances opted for this approach, rather than using real ribbon. It seems so much more luxurious this way, which makes perfect sense in this season of excess!

The Pearls of Wisdom may profess to be clever, but that illusion is dispelled when you start to use it. A round purse simply isn’t practical, especially when it has such a hard case. You’ll struggle to fit the basics like cell phones and credit cards inside, so I hope you’re dating a man with very deep pockets! You’ll need them for carrying the goodies you can’t leave behind.

Those functional drawbacks might make you balk at the $272 price tag, but compared to the similarly unusable Judith Leiber purses I don’t think this is a bad buy.

Bottega Veneta’s leather goods are the stuff that fashionista’s dreams are made of. Their elegant, minimal sense of design always seems on trend, even if it’s totally traditional. This Cervo tote is a great example of how Veneta is able to walk the line of classic and modern.

I am in love with this very deep blue. It’s so dark that it’s almost black, but it has this stunningly unmistakable blue tinge, a tiny burst of color. The combination of subtly grained leather with braided details is perfect. The braided pieces suture the bag together in a way that gives it the tiniest hint of edginess.

The shape of the Cervo is also pretty ideal. It has the slouchy, appeal of a hobo combined with the structure of a tote. The result is a practical, usable design that is casual, but not messy. It’s big enough to hold almost anything that you might need for a day on the go, but doesn’t have the cavernous characteristics of your average hobo.

At $1,650, the Cervo is a beautiful and timeless investment piece that will pay off in the long run.

If you have been wanting an affordable version of the famous Alexander McQueen Knuckleduster clutches, then you will be glad to hear that this stripy bag is only $39.99.

Of course, I have to point out the fact that this bold and plasticky clutch is nowhere near the realms of that particular fashion god. Obviously McQueen charges a high and mighty price for his beautiful creations, making them out of beautiful metals and sumptuous leathers. Instead, this somewhat rockabilly purse is in a patent faux-leather, much gaudier than its utterly sophisticated inspiration.

Still, it isn’t really fair to expect designer style from something so reasonably priced. That just isn’t the way the fashion world works. It is important, therefore, to focus more on what you do have, and that includes a funky knuckleduster, and the sort of punk style that so very many people carry off so well.

This is a cheap and cheerful addition to all those copycat knuckleduster purses!

A decorative suede hobo for only a little over $100? You don’t see that very often. However, that is exactly what Tignanello has delivered with its reasonably priced Suede Sensations tote.

Although this hobo is available in single colors, I actually think the contrasting color selection is what makes it interesting. The panels of brown, gray and black add another dimension to the design, as well as reinforcing the structure. In just one shade the effect is far flatter, and much less interesting.

Of course, it still isn’t boring in one color, thanks to the buckle decoration. This draws attention, and is purely decorative in the most impractical and fashionable way! At least, however, the rest of the bag is functional, with a great handle and a spacious interior. That’s not bad for just $114!

All in all this soft and stylish suede handbag is a simple and muted option with a surprising amount of luxury.

Juicy Couture’s trademark sense of flash is reined in a little here with this Fashion Velour French Purse.

In basic black, the rhinestone accents pop without appearing too tacky. They’re paired with snake embossed leather and cotton blend velour, materials that are luxurious without appearing too glitzy. The tassels might take things a bit too far, but that’s never been a problem for Juicy fans!

This wallet is small, in keeping with the French style, but it packs a lot into its interior. That still might not be enough to satisfy serious shoppers, but the pockets, card slots, and zippered coin pouch are more than I expected. There’s also an ID window for holding your license or a happy snap of the man in your life. The zip around design makes sure all your financial affairs are secure.

I like the classic nature of this basic black purse, but it’s also available in pale ash and powder pink if you prefer a bit more color.
