We’ve seen Donald J Pliner weave its magic in many larger bags. Now with the Seeyu pouch, the fashion house shows us what it can do on a smaller scale.

Most small bags tend to be made for evenings out, but Donald J Pliner takes a more relaxed approach. I just wonder whether it’s too relaxed. This pouch is covered in pleats which give it a casual slouch. That unstructured look will work well paired with jeans and a favorite T-shirt, but it means our Seeyu can’t really do double duty at night.

That’s disappointing, because with storage space so limited it won’t suit many of us during the day. The soft body means we can cram a few more items inside than a structured purse, but there’s still no space for large wallets, magazines, or many of the other things some of us call everyday essentials. If it looked a little more evening appropriate, we might just be able to eke some more use out of it.

That’s unfortunate, because at $135 I want to get as much use out of this small purse as I can!

This fun newspaper bag can carry your daily essentials, and offer something to read while you’re waiting at the bus stop.

You wouldn’t expect that a tote made from newspaper would be the smartest thing to carry outdoors, particularly during wild wintery weather. However its creators have thought of everything, laminating the pages with a strong, water resistant material. The bag is finished with soft woven handles and a Velcro closure.

As you might expect considering the recycled material it’s made from, the interior is plain and simple. If you need a lot of organizational assistance, this might not be the bag for you. That’s a little disappointing considering its generous size of 12.5 x 12 x 6 inches, but it’s also not really unexpected.

It may not be the most functional tote around, but it is a fun accessory that’s bound to be a conversation starter. It’s affordable too at $48 from Uncommon Goods.

Christian Dior is a label that tends to stick with the tried and true. So I was thrilled to see it busting out a bit with this Libertine hobo.

This is a hobo that reminds us that slouch can look sophisticated. The buttery soft qualities of the leather are emphasized with gorgeous vertical folds. This hobo’s shape is relaxed, as any good hobo should be, but I think those folds give it a bit more structure than the average.

The folds are the feature here, but the gold-toned hardware really finishes things off. I love the way the polished metal complements the black leather, adding just the right amount of richness.

The interior is nothing to rave about, but it’s certainly not lacking. The time honored configuration of one zippered pocket and a pair of open ones is used here. It’s not revolutionary, but it does the job of taking care of our daily swag.

The Libertine makes me swoon, but the price brings me back to reality. At $2300, it’s simply too rich for my blood. But Santa, if you’re reading, know that I’ve been really good this year!

It’s not often that I say this about a diffusion line, but I definitely like MICHAEL more than I like the Michael Kors collection accessories. Honestly, they have a very similar aesthetic, but the MICHAEL line’s prices are so much more reasonable that I automatically like them better. Unfortunately, this particular tote is not my favorite thing that MICHAEL has put out this season.

Michael Kors makes one of the best faux pythons out there. This one is particularly luxurious because of the patent. There’s really nothing like the high gloss of patent leather combined with the organic texture of snakeskin. It’s two great tastes that taste great together.

The rounded shape of this tote is great, but I have a few bones to pick with the details. First of all, what’s going on with all the unnecessary hardware? It’s too much. Secondly, these straps are way too slim for this bag. Not only does it look out of balance, it will also just never be comfortable enough for the long haul, even if the long haul is just a single day of Christmas shopping.

And while the price is reasonable at $500, it’s not exactly a deal. And if I’m going to buy a bag with too much hardware and uncomfortable straps, I at least want a deal, don’t you?

Mulberry is one of those lines that’s aesthetic is so classic that its pieces can work with just about anything. Which is why I was absolutely shocked to see how it updated its Clipper bag. Lately, the neon trend has begun to wear thin, but this is one bag worth noticing, which is good, because it’s impossible to ignore.

The high octane pink nylon twill on the Clipper is definitely 80s-inspired, but this color is richer and more vibrant than anything designers created in those days. The leather details tell you that the Clipper is high quality, and the silver hardware sets off the bright color nicely.

The Clipper is basically your standard duffel, only with geometric instead of circular sides. This version is particularly amazing, because it folds into a tiny zippered pouch. This would be perfect for travel during the holiday season, when you’re inevitably bringing home a lot more than you left with.

Plus, at $265, the Clipper is amazingly well priced. Seriously, if I had seen these in stores today, I probably would have bought ten.

Lanvin’s edgy take on French style has a definite wild side. Even in-flight classics like this one have a modern tinge that make them totally current. I am in love with this practical beauty of this python print canvas overnight bag.

The print on the fabric is spot on. It’s realistic, but a little faded around the edges. I don’t usually like python embossing, but python printing is another story, and on this Lanvin bag it doesn’t look like it’s trying too hard. The patent trim gives the bag a bit of shine and ensures that the most frequently handled parts of the bag are suitably protected.

The squarish shape is perfect for fitting under your airline seat, and exterior pockets are a great place to stow your tickets and passport. The roomy interior allows you to pack a lot of stuff inside with no interference. I’d say you could easily fit a pair of sneakers, two days of clothes, and a few toiletries in this bag. Throw your iPad or Kindle in the other side pocket and you’re good for a short holiday getaway.

There’s a fine line between whimsical and childish, but Felix Rey has well and truly crossed it with this Happy Knit Tote.

I suppose there’s a cheery charm to this smiling white face with his yellow pom-pom nose, but really. Can you imagine any fully grown adult wanting to carry this tote? It’s more than a little silly. Woolen totes might be on trend for the season, but something tells me this isn’t what the forecasters had in mind.

Thankfully it’s not quite as ridiculous inside. The black, plainweave lining will resist stains and go the distance. It’s relatively spacious, and secure with a magnetic clasp. I also like the shoulder straps, which should be pretty durable as they’re made from leather. But you know that I’m clutching at straws.

Truthfully, it doesn’t matter what is inside this tote. It’s just too silly for any of us to seriously consider carrying. Felix Rey has some nerve charging $120 for it!

Organic Cotton Bags on eBay

Etienne Aigner bags are typically clean and refined, but the label seems to have been influenced by modern designs with this Whitney satchel.

The uncluttered, smooth lines we usually associate with Etienne Aigner are gone, replaced instead with gleaming hardware and a casual slouch. The style invokes a large bow with its buckled center and fanned ruching. It’s an interesting design detail, which gives the Whitney a bit of femininity without the fluff.

Those pockets in front and back are bound to come in handy, but I think they make this bag look a bit cluttered. I can’t help wishing for a little of Etienne Aigner’s traditional restraint! I appreciate Etienne Aigner attempting to shake things up and offer more contemporary accessories, but I’m not sure this one is entirely successful.

One thing we can always count on from Etienne Aigner is smart design. The Whitney is fabulously functional, with plenty of storage space and several interior pockets complementing the ones we see outside. The handles should be long enough for most of us to sling over our shoulder, but if you’re on the go you may prefer to go cross-body with the longer, attachable strap.

At $148, the price is right for this everyday Whitney satchel. I’m just not sure the looks are.
