Most fashion houses have a clear design vision, but Maxx New York’s accessories are much more eclectic than that. I never know what I’m going to get, and that’s not always a good thing. The label’s Spencer Chain Hobo is yet another bag which leaves me scratching my head.
I just can’t figure out what Maxx New York was aiming for here. The Spencer is a hobo, but it bears little resemblance to the slouchy boho-chic purses favored by today’s flower children. Its shape is more like a satchel, and while the material is soft it’s not exactly slouchy. The nylon body has a sporty look; it’s just the kind of fabric I’d expect to see on a gym bag. But then Maxx New York takes the Spencer in another, more sophisticated direction with the addition of rich gold chain handles.
Needless to say, I’m confused, but at least the Spencer makes good inside. It’s generously sized, with a plethora of synthetic trimmed pockets to boot. If anything it’s too big for everyday use, but packrats won’t mind those enormous dimensions one bit.
What a shame the Spencer’s looks let it down. At $158 it’s reasonably priced, but it just doesn’t make a clear enough style statement for me.

Hobos are typically bohemian accessories, but this Matt & Nat Etta bag embraces the hippie chick spirit more than most!
A bag which makes a statement as strong as the Touche clutch could only come from one designer: Mary Frances.
I haven’t really seen much from Jil Sander, lately. That’s fine, because what she lacks in quantity, she makes up for in quality. Her sharp, minimal designs have a timeless quality but still look unrepentantly modern. This shiny neon market bag is a fabulous example of Jil Sander at her most interesting.
Burberry’s classic designs have made the British fashion house a preppy staple for decades. Lately, it’s been experimenting with slightly edgier designs and working with materials that are a little more affordable. Frankly, the results are more interesting to me than anything it’s put out in years and this canvas tote is a good example of this.
It wouldn’t be a Betseyville handbag if it didn’t come spring-loaded with attitude, so everyone say a cheery hello to the punk inspired “Punky Rox” clutch!
Whether you lived through the decade or not, you can embrace your inner 80s child with this bold Marni leather wallet.
