Miu Miu is a fashion house whose output can best be described as uneven; for every hit, there’s always a miss or more. Thankfully this Aviator bag falls into the former camp.

The Aviator has been one of Miu Miu’s best loved handbag styles for years, so perhaps it’s not a great surprise that I’ve warmed to this one. Each season Miu Miu tweaks the style a bit, adding a little embellishment or experimenting with the skin. The variations here are what makes this Aviator something extra special. The round studs bordering the flap give it real flair, and that rich blue nappa leather would look darling with jeans.

Open up the push lock closure to reveal a luxuriously large main compartment. There’s enough space for everything that you need and then some here, but be prepared to scrounge around for small items. With only a single zippered pocket inside, this bag could easily become a black hole if you’re not a natural organizer.

But boy it’s gorgeous, and if I had a spare $1595 lying around I’d snap it up in a heartbeat. More of this please Miu Miu!

H&M is showing us its eco-friendly side with a new limited edition collection made from the remnants of its recent line with Lanvin.

Fashionistas may spot remains of Alber Elbaz zebra-print trench coat or rose embellished dress in the mix, but don’t mistake this for a Lanvin line. Instead the Waste collection is the work of H&M’s chief designer Ann-Sofie Johansson, who’s pretty pleased with the results.

“This mini collection from leftover fabrics looks absolutely wonderful,” says Ann-Sofie. “My favorite piece is the bright, color-block tunic. It’s perfect for that first spring update.“

Handbag fans will be happy to note there are a couple of casual tote bags in the mix, alongside the dresses, skirts, and tops. They’re so colorful that I wouldn’t suggest dressing head to toe in the line, but any item from the 10-piece range would make a great statement piece.

You’ll be lucky to get your hands on these goodies though. Due to the line’s limited nature, only one store in the countries which stocked the original Lanvin for H&M collection will sell the Waste range, and China, Turkey, Israel, Russia, and the Middle East miss out entirely. American readers should head to H&M’s New York store on 51st Street and Fifth Avenue in the first week of February to get their hands on the eco-chic pieces.

Is it just me, or would you expect a bag calling itself an airport tote to be tailor-made for travel? If you do, you’ll be just as disappointed as I am by this Miquelrius tote.

For it seems that the name comes not from its travel application, but from the Jordi Labanda illustrations on the outside. It’s all a bit sneaky really. The images of a pretty jetsetter encourage us to think about travel, but then we look inside and see a bag that’s sorely lacking for that purpose.

There are no compartments for passports or boarding passes, in fact nothing at all to really encourage us to use this tote for our next long-haul flight. In fact, with only a zippered pocket inside this tote is even less suitable for vacations than the average tote bag! It’s also not very large either; it might work for a regular day out, but it wouldn’t hold even half the things I need when I’m flying!

If you love the girly print on the exterior, by all means indulge in this Airport Tote. But if you want a bag to help you out on your next getaway, I’d keep looking.

Olivia + Joy will celebrate its first anniversary with a brand new website, and its first advertising campaign.

“As the brand nears its first anniversary, it was a natural next step for Olivia + Joy to debut its first advertising campaign,” said Abe Dweck, the president of Olivia + Joy’s parent company Accessory Exchange. “The brand has been so well received by retailers, consumers and editors alike, that we are thrilled to present our newest collection and pay homage to the city that we call home.“

The label pays homage to the Big Apple in the ads, which capture a day in the life of some gorgeous New Yorkers. The girls use Olivia + Joy’s new season satchels, totes, and hobos as they travel to various locations around the city.

This is an advertising campaign with more substance than the average, as storylines and vignettes will be posted on Olivia + Joy’s website ahead of New York Fashion Week.

The move to advertising really represents a coming of age for Olivia + Joy. This ad isn’t the most exciting I’ve ever seen, but there’s certainly potential there. What do you think of the label’s first foray into the advertising world?

High quality craftsmanship doesn’t always translate to the high class looks, as Michael Kors sadly shows with this Veronica shoulder bag.

This is one of those purses that seems to try too hard. It’s busy, with laces threaded through grommets pulling in the leather. I don’t mind a little ruching, but with these cords running here and there the pleats are overcomplicated.

These details already demand attention, so the choice of glitzy bronze leather is confusing. This is such a head-turning shade; something simpler might have helped us get away with the heavily adorned body.

I’ve never been a great fan of metallic leathers at the best of times, but this bronze tone leaves me cold. It’s brash and gaudy, and it cheapens the luxury skin. If it weren’t for the $298 price tag I’d have sworn it was synthetic. It might hold out longer than a manmade skin, but for that kind of cash I want something that looks sophisticated.

It’s a shame, because once you open the Veronica up it’s not a bad bag. It’s called a medium bag, although with oversized purses on the way out I think it’s probably a large by today’s standards. Whatever you call it, you’ll have space for everything you need, and a little left over for a few indulgences. The zip and open pockets can take care of your technology and other valuables, and with a fob attached you won’t be left foraging for your keys.

The Veronica’s bold looks put me off, but anyone attracted to that kind of glitz may see the charm of this Michael Kors shoulder bag.

Vanessa Bruno is a fashion newcomer, but one that is really beginning to grow on me. To be honest, her pared down bohemian styles aren’t really my personal fashion philosophy, but I really appreciate their appeal. This laser cut tote is a great compromise between hippie and sweetly feminine styles that a lot of women are going to go gaga for.

The importance of a well-chosen brown cannot be overestimated. This particular color is great because it looks almost exactly like the color of those wrinkly paper bags that your mom used to pack your lunch in. Actually, my mom never packed my lunch, but the color makes me feel nostalgic, anyways. The wrinkly texture of the leather contributes to the effect.

Don’t be fooled by the weathered look of the leather though; this bag is extremely well-structured and designed. Every detail has been thought out, down to the reinforced bottom. The scalloped laser cut lace trim, though, is the real eye-catcher on this tote. It’s got a very 70s flower girl appeal, but in a weather-worn, sturdy sort of way.

Truthfully, at $900, I think this tote is a bit pricey, but the level of detail does demand respect.

Lanvin always seems to strike a pitch perfect balance between elegant timelessness and cutting edge design. The Happicolo is way more classic than it is cutting edge, but it is fabulously beautiful, nonetheless.

The complexly quilted black leather on the Happicolo is trademark Lanvin. It has a cross-hatched effect that makes it stand out in a sea of quilted bags. The softness of the leather makes it extra luxurious, and it has a nice soft sheen to it that really complements its elegance.

Lanvin’s kept the shape nice and simple on the Happicolo. The size is also pared down, which makes it perfect for wearing across the body. I’m really excited that bags are getting a little smaller, lately, and the Happicolo is a great example of why. Proportionally, it’s very flattering. And how much do you really need to carry around with you, anyways?

The details on the Happicolo are what make it special. The ornate grommeted clasp, the grosgrain-laced chain strap, these are all Lanvin staples that make their bags recognizable and special. At $1,680, I think the Happicolo is a hefty investment, but it’s one that I would make if I had the means.

I should admit right off that I’m something of a Marc Jacobs loyalist from way back in the Perry Ellis grunge days. But his eponymous line almost always exceeds my expectations nonetheless. This ladylike Minetta bag is a great example of where his design sensibility is at right now.

The gray-brown leather on the Minetta is really interesting. It’s something between a dusty brown and a mouse gray. There’s something old-fashioned about the color and its combination with the diamond-shaped quilting that is super feminine and also really wearable. The slight texture and gloss make it instantly sophisticated.

The Minetta’s shape is also really old-fashioned. Not in a stodgy sort of way, though; it’s just got a lot of old world charm. The triangular shape is well-balanced by the dual straps, and I love the convenience of the short hand strap combined with the longer, more elegant chain and leather shoulder strap. The luggage-style clasp is both beautiful and secure.

The only possible drawback I see in the Minetta is that while the color is versatile, the style is a little bit limited. This is not the kind of bag that will pair well with hard, edgy designs. This is the kind of bag that looks best with sweet dresses and granny boots. At $1,295, you might want a purse with a few more options, but you certainly won’t find anything prettier for the price.

Get the biker vibe with the Biker tote from Rebecca Minkoff.

OK, so a vibrant magenta isn’t perhaps the most rebellious shade, but maybe that is why this tote works. You have the traditional zips and pockets strewn at random angles across the front, but the bright color means it doesn’t look too aggressive. Less Harley-Davidson, more Harley-meets-fashion. Which, in my humble opinion, is much prettier and easier to wear than some of the more hardcore options on the market.

Other than the style, it is interesting to note the addition of a cute little tassel. It is pretty, but, like the croc-print leather, it does divert somewhat from the biker theme. What do you make of it?

Inside this traditional upright tote has plenty of room; so much so that a divider in the middle would have been appreciated. Still, you do get plenty of pockets, including on the outside of that soft leather purse, and that means we can’t complain too much!

Classic simplicity can be a hard style to pull off well, but thankfully Stuart Weitzman is an expert at the art.

The Stanza clutch takes what is in essence a midnight black suede purse, and manages to transform it into a glamorous evening bag. An element of this is obviously thanks to the gorgeous materials, but if we are honest the real oomph comes from the oh-so-delicate beaded edge of contrasting gold beads. Aside from looking a little like zips (good if you like zips, bad if you don’t…), these are a classic and very simple touch that is really effective.

The shape of the bag, once unnoticed, is dramatically emphasized in this suede clutch, which is why it is so good that Stuart Weitzman has added a feature button as a cute clasp. It makes the shape that much more interesting. I also like that the optional handle isn’t just chain or just leather, but a gold and black combination of the two that is a little more interesting.

You do pay dearly for the quality of materials and design, to the tune of $350. It is pretty though!
