Anya Hindmarch has come a long way in the past few seasons. For a while, I was doubtful that she had much going on as a designer, but she seems to be developing a quirky, feminine style that I’m growing to like. This Toco clutch is the most cheerful bag I’ve seen in months, and it’s definitely a breath of fresh air.

The stripey woven raffia on the Toco has a great chevron pattern that automatically brings to mind cocktails on balmy terraces overlooking the sea. The colorful weave may not work for your winter wardrobe, but come spring, I predict that this color palette will be a major hit. It’s also ever-so-slightly muted, so it will be more versatile than ultra-brights would be.

The shape of the Toco is very traditional. It’s a simple fold-over shape in a great size for carrying. The bead embellished side tassel is a great touch that adds that quirky flair Hindmarch is becoming known for, not to mention a slight asymmetry that makes the clutch more interesting.

At $475, the Toco isn’t exactly cheap for a a small woven bag, but it’s not completely overpriced, either.

Prada goes back to the fashion vault for this retro Rete clutch.

It takes a brave designer to use a material like macramé. While it was all the rage in the early 70s, it hasn’t really been popular since. The knotted material could so easily have appeared like a kitschy fashion throwback, but I think Prada has handled the retro fabric well. The beige suede frame and cuoio leather claw clasp are gentle touches which help to bring the Rete into the 21st century.

This purse is larger than many clutches, and Prada has appointed it accordingly. The zippered pocket and pair of pouches make organizing this space a cinch, so you can get on with more important things. Or at least you could if your hands weren’t busy clutching the Rete. The lack of shoulder strap is a glaring omission at this luxury price point.

There’s a casual, easy air to the Rete which would make it ideal for the warmer weather ahead. The biggest stumbling block is, of course, the price. The materials don’t justify the exorbitant $1295 tag, but perhaps the Prada pedigree does.

Pink Studio proves that the best things often come in small packages with this stylish Nepal mini bag.

It’s called a mini, but it’s not as delicate as so many bags with this title. Its boxy, compact shape seems more sturdy and rugged, giving the impression that the Nepal is a purse that punches well above its weight.

The patterned gray fabric seems like an ethnic interpretation of herringbone. It’s a great complement to the Nepal’s black leather body. This exterior is kitted out with a deep open pocket on one side and a zippered one on the other. These asymmetrical compartments work well with the unique top zip which runs from front to back, rather than front to side. I love this zip, which works as a design element and a security feature.

With the two side pockets, we don’t need much to keep the petite interior organized. We get another zippered pocket inside anyway, which offers a more secure space for hiding car keys and other valuables.

This little bag has a little price tag to match. $40 is a steal for a purse of this quality, don’t you think?

Alexander Wang’s new bags have hit shelves this week, and I am totally freaking out about it. Yes, I am a bit of a fan, but even if you aren’t, you might find yourself drawn in by his sophisticated, cutting edge aesthetic. This Lia messenger is a gorgeous low key accompaniment to Wang’s line of iconic accessories.

The textured black leather on the Lia has been weathered without fading the color out or detracting from its laid back cool. The rose gold hardware is unique and minimal. I really haven’t seen rose gold used that much in accessories, so it really stands out, and I hope to see more of it. I especially like the round grommets on the strap attachment.

The shape of the Lia is great, and I’m not really a fan of messengers. I like this one because its been rounded off at the corners and pared down a bit. This style isn’t as clunky or bulky as your usual messenger. The studs at the bottom are what really take the Lia over the edge. Their lopped-off conic shape and texture make them an interesting, but subtle, detail.

If you have $780 for a new toy, the Lia is a fantastic way to go. You won’t regret it now, or years from now, when it’s a total collector’s item.

Alexander Wang’s sharp, urban styles are putting the hip back into hipster. Seriously, he has the market cornered on edgy bohemianism. This Kirsten bag is destined to become one of this season’s instant classics.

One of the most interesting things about the Kirsten, right off the bat, is the way that it combines textures. The gray leather of the bag and the textured leather straps are so exactly the same color that the effect of the contrast is pretty nuanced. The straps, of course, aren’t very subtle, but the addition of the multiple textures adds dimension in a sophisticated, less obvious, way.

The size of the Kirsten makes it perfect for a can’t-leave-home-without-it kind of girl. Seriously, this thing is the size of a carry-on, and with all those straps dangling, it will be impossible not to notice. The Kirsten is definitely not for shrinking violets, that’s for sure. It’s a statement bag that screams so loudly that it’s really only going to work for a woman with a very strong sense of her own style.

Handbags go hi-tech with this Co-Lab by Christopher Kon tote.

We are used to leather-look handbags that are actually made out of something like vinyl. However, I doubt many of us have come across a purse like the Plexi, which is made out of neoprene. What is neoprene, I hear you ask? Well, in essence it is a durable synthetic rubber that is designed to withstand lots of different environments. For you, this means it is practical and good for those who like to “do things” whilst looking cool.

Away from the material, and onto the design. The slouchy folded shape, the cute little handles, all of it is about looking eye catching whilst still trying to be functional. I’m not that sure about the color, to be honest; it is a little too sickly and sweet, an impression that I am not convinced works with the chunky relaxed shape. Still, it is different!

The Plexi satchel is an organizer’s dream, thanks to the functional compartmentalized interior, so this may well make up for any slight questions over the looks!

Stylish lines and grommets to boot? The Kooba Montana tote has me sold!

OK, OK, so grommets are generally a winner for me. However, there is a fine line between using punk eyelets to make an impact, and going over the top and looking ridiculous! Thankfully this peachy pink leather bag manages to do it well, confining the metalwork to the tapered panels leading up to the handle. As well as looking quite awesome, it is lovely to see a design eye being cast over a tote’s carrying equipment, an area usually over-looked and under-loved.

Although many people aren’t fans of totes with slouchy sides, I have little to complain about with this bag. The unusual color, the great design, the spacious interior; it all gets a big thumbs up from me. The only downside, therefore, is the price, as Kooba will charge you a painful $494 to carry this leather beauty around on your arm.

This convertible clutch from Phillip Lim proves the old adage than the simplest things in life are often the best.

I’m not sure why I’m so bowled over by this antique white leather purse, but its simplicity has wowed me. The clean lines are so chic and sophisticated, and the dainty silver clasp stunning.

The exterior is impressively minimal, but there’s more to this purse than meets the eye. In standard mode it’s actually double up, but we can unfold it for extra storage space. If you’re going large I’d add the shoulder strap, which should make it much easier to carry the sizable purse. I appreciate that Phillip Lim has opted for more leather, rather than a conventional chain, as it’ll be much kinder on our shoulder.

It goes without saying that you’ll need to treat this baby with kid gloves if you want to keep that bright white exterior pristine. But at a relatively affordable $425, I think this versatile purse may be worth the effort.
