See By Chloe Poya Pouch Small Vintage Leather Bag | Feminine Vintage Looking Shoulder Bag

Posted on: Feb 7

See By Chloe Poya Pouch Small Vintage Leather BagSee by Chloe’s latest line is quirky and feminine. The Poya bags, with their leather lace trim, seem to be central this season, and for good reason. Their retro good looks are fashionable without being too trendy. This Poya Pouch is a great addition to the line.

Chloe calls this color antique rose, but it’s a little more mauve than pink. It fits in well with all the pale, soft nudes that have been so popular lately, but it has a retro appeal all its own. The trim is slightly darker in tone  and smoother in texture than the primary material, which creates a subtle contrast.

The shape of the Poya Pouch is totally 70s, but not in an over-the-top disco sort of way. It has a laid back, bohemian sensibility that is refined and feminine. But it’s the small details, like the laser cut lace piping, intricate stitching, and delicate gold hardware, that bring the Poya Pouch together in a cohesive, beautiful way. Plus, the small size and cross body strap make it easy and comfortable to carry.

See by Chloe has really lowered its price point this season without diluting the style factor. At $225, the Poya Pouch is a great bag for a great price.

Rebecca Minkoff Lust Cross-Body Bag | Studded Hunter Green Leather Handbag

Posted on: Feb 7

Rebecca Minkoff LustSome of us are beginning to tire of studs, but it seems that Rebecca Minkoff is just as enamored with the metal as ever. She uses her favorite accent to great effect here on this Lust cross-body.

I was suffering stud fatigue, but Rebecca Minkoff has ignited my ardor again here. By relegating the studs to the long thick strap, we avoid that all too familiar heavy metal look. They become a feature rather than an overbearing attempt to cash in on the trends. And we can appreciate the glazed leather in almost-black Hunter green so much better when it’s left unadorned.

That high quality leather gives the Lust just a hint of rebellious slouch. This purse is a little bit biker chic, but not so dangerous as to scare your average woman away. The rounded shape and curved flap soften things a little, making the Lust an appealing blend of sugar and spice.

This is a mid-sized cross-body so packrats may struggle to fit everything they want inside. However I think there’s something refreshing about only carrying about what you really need. It’s like a weight is lifted from your shoulders, literally!

Yes, the Lust seems a very appropriate name for a bag that’s so enticing!

  • Oversized clip closure
  • Printed twill lining
  • A single strap with a 21.75 inch drop
  • Measures 7 x 8.5 x 2 inches

Tiffany & Co. New Spring Bags | Wicker & Colored Leather Accessories for New Season

Tiffany Wicker Bags

Tiffany Ellie ClutchDesigners Richard Lambertson and John Truex are getting us excited for the warm weather ahead with this sneak peek at their spring 2011 line for Tiffany & Co.

The collection captures the newness of spring, which is so much about color,” said Lambertson. “We’ve focused on a spectrum that goes from white to classic neutrals to brights in textures and shapes that are modern yet timeless.

The woven wicker collection takes me back to childhood picnics with its natural cane and classic leather accents. The pretty coral, sea rose, and chartreuse hues introduced this season are also just the thing for coordinating with blooming gardens. I particularly love the way the coral color pops on the Ellie bow bag pictured, but I hate to think how that oversized beaded strap would feel on bare springtime shoulders!

You’ll find the new crop of spring purses at selected Tiffany stores from the middle of the month. Prices start at an affordable $95 and top a prohibitive $17, 500. I suppose that range offers something for everybody!

Ed Hardy Malis Purse | White & Silver Mini Fold-Over Tote

Posted on: Feb 7

Ed Hardy Malis Mini Fold-Over ToteMini bags get a bit of a mixed reception in the handbag world. They often try to be too many things, and the risk is that the designer tries to cram everything from a normal sized purse into a mini version.

The Malis mini tote is partially guilty of these crimes. The traditional shape looks like a normal sized bag, and in addition to the gleaming white leather the label seems to have added silver studs and silver print.Thankfully the clean color palette manages to reduce the busyness of this, saving this Ed Hardy handbag from handbag overkill.

Once you get past the size of the handbag, you come to the shape. With that unusual curvy handbag you get your first inkling that this isn’t as predictable as it could be. Then it folds over, and your little clutch is neatly transformed into a shoulder bag with a long strap. This is a lot of versatility for a mini bag.

Surprisingly practical, this silver purse sometimes treads the fine line between nice and nasty, but I think it falls on the nice side!

More Features of this Ed Hardy Malis Tote

  • Also available in purple
  • Crackled synthetic leather exterior
  • Multiple carrying options
  • Tattoo inspired silver graphics

Rampage Krista Shoulder Bag | Pleated Pink Synthetic Handbag

Posted on: Feb 7

Rampage Krista Shoulder BagAdd a pop of color to your winter wardrobe with this fun Krista shoulder bag from Rampage.

Various textures and skins help to break up this enormous shoulder bag. The front and back feature casual vertical pleats, bordered by shiny patent swatches. None of these materials are real leather, but that’s not unexpected at this price point. The patent seems a bit cheap, but the matte synthetic is as soft and supple as we could hope for.

I’m less enthusiastic about the shoulder strap, which seems to have forgotten about practicality in the pursuit of style. The chunky knotted finish with the metal rings is eye-catching but seriously, who’d want to throw this heavy strap over their shoulder? You’ll need a thick coat or sweater to protect your shoulder, because this handle certainly won’t!

It’s also disappointing that Rampage doesn’t offer more color choices. Only the bravest of fashionistas, or the girliest of girls, will dare to carry something so very pink. It might not turn as many heads, but a more neutral black or brown would likely be more popular.

It’s up to you to decide whether this Rampage bag is too big. Many girls will love the freedom that comes with so much space, but just as many will curse how heavy the Krista becomes. It’s also impossible to find anything in an interior so large, even with zip and slip pockets to help us out.

We do get a lot of bag for our dollar here though. If that’s how you measure value, you won’t mind spending $120 on this shoulder bag.

  • Magnetic snap closure
  • Fabric lined interior
  • Dual handles with a 10 inch drop
  • Measures 20 x 11 x 6.5 inches

Comme des Garcons’ New 69 Bags | Rei Kawakubo Reinvents Classic Paco Rabanne Purses

Posted on: Feb 7

Paco Rabanne 69 bagsComme des Garcons‘ creative director Rei Kawakubo has teamed up with Paco Rabanne to relaunch the 69 chain mail bag made famous by Rabanne’s label in the swinging sixties.

The original handbag was named one of the 50 Bags that Changed the World by Design Museum of London. It’s a legacy that has outlived Paco Rebanne’s fashion house itself, which closed its doors in 2006.

But now Rei Kawakubo, with Rebanne’s help, is giving the famed fashion house a new lease of life and the rebooted 69 bags are the very first step. Apparently other accessories and clothing will join them in time. But for now we can choose the 69 purse in nine different materials including classic steel, natural horn, Perspex, suede, aluminum, and stingray.

Prices for the new 69 bags range between $965 and $2200. They’re not cheap, but perhaps the prices are justified to own a piece of history. Look for them in Comme des Garcons stores and other selected retailers.

Lauren by Ralph Lauren Newbury Tote Bag | Classic Orange Saffiano Leather Handbag

Posted on: Feb 7

Ralph Lauren Newbury ToteRalph Lauren goes back to basics with this Newbury tote bag.

What this tote lacks in cutting edge style it makes up for in sophistication. The shape is familiar and its clean, uncluttered lines compelling. I love the unique texture and color of the leather, and the embossed crest in a classy way of branding it.

I could have done without the polished metal stirrup dangling from the top though, as it appears a bit gimmicky. However this kind of accent isn’t unexpected for the equestrian loving brand. I’ll bet Ralph Lauren devotees will lap it up, but if you’re not so keen you can simply unclip it.

This traditional tote shape is classic for a reason. It really is ideal for carrying everything we need, and making those items easy to access. A zippered pouch extends along the length of the back wall, while the front wall is packed with even more pockets. The removable cosmetics bag is another handy touch for holding make-up essentials when you’re on the go.

Considering its evergreen style and functional design, this Newbury tote seems like great value at $248.

More Features of This Ralph Lauren Leather Tote Bag

  • Lobster claw closure
  • Cotton lined interior
  • Measures 12 x 12 x 5.5 inches
  • Comes with a woven cotton duster bag

Matthew Campbell’s Handbags | Jewelry Designer’s New M.C.L Clutch Collection

Posted on: Feb 6

Matthew Campbell PursesMatthew Campbell showed us he has an eye for the finer things with his colorful jewelry line, and now he’s putting those skills to good use with a handbag collection. We can count on that same vibrant energy and superb craftsmanship with the M.C.L. by Matthew Campbell Laurenza purses.

The clutch bags offer the blend of funky style and luxury that Matthew Campbell is known for, with signature embroidered fabrics, luxe Italian leathers, and faceted jewels. Currently the line doesn’t have the totes and satchels I crave for daytime use, but hopefully we’ll see these purses added in the coming seasons.

Many of the clutches have a detachable chain to help them transition from day wear to evening attire. Unlike so many clutches, they also have everything you need to stay organized from nine to five. The interiors are well appointed, with several pockets and key-chain clips.

The M.C.L. by Matthew Campbell Laurenza handbags are available at a wide range of price points, with small purses starting at $80 and the jeweled bags topping $8000. However on average, you can expect to pay between $280 and $1000 to own a piece of the new collection. Look for them in M.C.L. boutiques and other selected retailers.

Rafe Jordana Tote | Modern Purple Pleated Belt Bag

Posted on: Feb 6

Rafe Jordana ToteRafe updates the tote bag for the 21st century with the Jordana.

Once upon a time, totes were simple, boxy creatures. The Jordana is a world away from this kind of bag, with tight pleats, a buckled belt, and eye-popping gold stitching creating volume and drama. There’s so much going on here, but in deep brown-purple I think Rafe manages to rein his accents in.

The leather sadly lets this tote down though. While it is an authentic cowhide, it’s quite stiff. That means the pleats don’t sit as softly as they should, and the finish isn’t as luxurious. I expect something a bit plusher for $475, and I’m probably not alone.

While the exterior isn’t quite as opulent as I’d like, the interior is luxuriously large. The jacquard lining and leather trimmed pockets work together to survive everyday punishment. The Jordana has also got a lovely long handle, so we can just grab it and go in the morning and comfortably carry it all day long.

The Jordana doesn’t quite deliver what I expect in a $500 bag, but it’s still got enough style and substance to tempt me.

More Features of This Rafe Pleated Tote

  • Zip top closure
  • A single handle with a 12 inch drop
  • Measures 12 x 18.5 x 3.25 inches

Two Lips’ New Purses | Footwear Label Does Handbags & Tech Accessories

Posted on: Feb 6

Two Lips Phone ClutchFootwear label Two Lips has recently added a range of handbags and technology accessories to its fashion collection.

There are 12 different handbags available in a range of different fabrics. Sequins and eye-catching hardware help to give these purses a “sexy, feminine slant” according to Teri Santella, the president of Two Lips licensee Pacific Group.

The handbags are complemented with a range of technology cases, including sleeves for iPads, Kindles, and laptops.

There’s also a unique Phone Clutch, as pictured, which holds a smart phone in place along with credit cards and loose change. You can leave the cell inside your clutch while you text or dial, although I imagine it’d look a bit silly if you help the entire purse up to your ear for calls! The $18 Phone Clutch is currently compatible with five different smart phones, but the company is expanding the range to fit larger mobiles.

Look for the new Two Lips accessories, including the original Phone Clutches, in stores this fall.
