Savanna joins the mesh handbag market with this cute little cross body.

I find that metal mesh works best when it is left to speak for itself. Any embellishment generally makes the purse look kind of ridiculous, and therefore it is nice to see that Savanna have elected to keep this golden evening bag nice and plain.

Of course, mesh like this can never be plain. It glitters and shines too much, and this means it will never really be suitable for work. Despite this, however, this cross-body avoids the trappings of many evening bags, and gives you plenty of room and a chic and functional long chain strap. An optional wrist strap may have been nice, as many posh outfits won’t work with a chain chopping them in half, but I suppose this purse is just too chunky.

Aside from the mesh, I would like to draw your attention to the gorgeous little triangular or diamond shaped clasp. In many ways the best feature of this whole glamorous creation, it adds a touch of class and breaks up that otherwise never-ending metal. Considering the bargain $27 price tag, a cute little design touch like this is a rarity.

Tano has made this Petit Larceny bag for girls who love no fuss, and no frills style.

In a world of frilly, embellished handbag the tough style of this purse really stands out. It gets its personality not from sequins or studs, but from buckled details and that weathered looking crunch leather. In this bold electric blue, that distinctive finish really stands out.

You get the sense looking at the Petit Larceny that its appearance only tells half the story. It seems like the kind of purse that’s made to work hard, and it delivers on that score. The main zippered compartment complements two smaller ones which close with snaps. There are front and back zippered pockets too, and more inside for a cell phone and other small valuables.

Given its name you might expect this purse to be, well, petite. However, while it’s a slender creature there’s plenty of space for carrying everything most of us could want.

The final piece of the puzzle is the adjustable strap, which allows you to convert the Petit Larceny from a shoulder bag to a cross-body depending on your whim. I really like this versatility, and I think busy girls who spend a lot of time on their feet will too.

Tano is one of those lines that fiercely clings to its design vision. Some critics may long for more variety, but when the label can continue to churn out reliable bags like this I’m not really ready for change!

Hobos are typically boho-chic, but this Sicily hobo from Susan Farber is more rock chick than flower child.

The first thing you notice is those wild ruffled sides, which give the Sicily an edgy feminine appearance. All those frills never look too girly though thanks to the dark colored leather and shiny zippered edging.

The design is sound, but I think the leather’s finish stops it from becoming truly great. The waxed surface gives the leather a bit of gloss, but in my opinion it cheapens the skin. It stiffens the cowhide, so it doesn’t slouch as softly as it might. That polish is also reminiscent of a cheap synthetic, which is the last thing we want when we’re paying for the real deal.

I can’t fault this hobo on a practical level though. As the waxed leather is stiff, the Sicily has a bit more structure than its hobo counterparts. That’s a blessing in a bag this size, as it won’t collapse down when we’re trying to pack and unpack it. There are enough pockets for keeping this generously sized bag organized, although with leather reinforcements I’m not sure how long they’ll last before showing wear.

The traditionalist in me can’t resist the basic black Sicily. There’s just something so edgy and dangerous about it. If you’d prefer a more unusual look though, consider this hobo in the brown-purple shade called plum.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s luxe The Row collection will have a brand new addition this fall: handbags!

The stylish twins have created purses that are every bit as opulent as the rest of their pieces, including crocodile clutches, a petite satchel dramatically covered in ostrich feathers, and a unique Twin purse. This unusual piece is actually two small bags sewn together to create one handbag. This quirky design allows women to flip the Twin over for two different looks.

The Olsens say their line was inspired by the luxury and sense of whimsy seen in family friendly animated films Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Triplets of Belleville.

“When we styled the pieces, we knew that we wanted it to be item-based, so it could be mixed and matched,” explained Ashley Olsen said. “We wanted each piece to stand alone.”

“I think fashion should have a sense of humor,” Mary-Kate Olsen said, noting the range’s sunny yellow shades. “We wanted people to smile.“

Many fall fashions are heavy and bit gloomy, so I’m thrilled to see the Olsen twins lightening things up and offering a more playful alternative. Are you looking forward to seeing their handbags?

The Marc by Marc Jacobs line has taken a turn for the traditional this season. It’s cut down on the showier, edgier styles and focused on ladylike tailoring and timeless looks. Luckily, it’s still retained that Marc Jacobs quirkiness, and I’m a big fan of the new direction. In an economy like this, it’s hard to imagine spending oodles of money on a bag that will be out of style in two seasons.

The Hayley’s black leather exterior is pebbled in a way that screams “classic.” Who doesn’t need an inky black tote that goes with everything? While the overall effect of the bag is traditional and super wearable, the details are a little retro. Like the large front pouch pocket, which is a very convenient place to stow your phone. The pocket gives the bag a 70s sort of hip-to-be-square aesthetic

I really like the style of this bag. There’s nothing ostentatious about it, but it has great seaming and a tailored look that will make it great for office garb or preppier casual looks. The turnlock clasp is a quirky touch that keeps the look fresh and young.

I don’t usually recommend a tote bag for $500, but the Hayley is so versatile and practical, not to mention beautiful, that I really think it’s one to grab.

It might leave traditionalists cold, but cat lovers and fans of kooky fashion are sure to embrace this Feline Face coin purse from Sun N’ Sand.

The label typically offers casual beach-themed purses, but this is one is much more creative and off the wall. I can’t imagine carrying a tote with this style, but as this purse will spend most of its life hidden inside a larger bag I’m seriously tempted. It might be a bit morbid to fish coins out of a cat’s head, but as far as I’m concerned that only adds to the fun!

How exciting to see a coin purse that isn’t round! The cut out shape makes an already playful purse perfectly whimsical. It’s practical too though, with a zippered pocket sandwiched between the faces to keep your coins secure. This purse isn’t very large, but as it’s only meant for holding loose change it doesn’t need to be.

This Feline Face coin purse is a bit of a fashion gamble, but it’s a cheap one to indulge in. This bag is priced to sell at $16.

I’ve never considered Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a girly girl, but in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar she tells of her fondess for handbags, particularly her new favorite Salvatore Ferragamo purse.

“I do love a good handbag,” she admitted. “I think no one should make fun of anyone else’s handbag choices. I have this Ferragamo hot-pink bag that I adore. My view was that I would carry it around only in spring, but it makes me so happy, I’m even now lugging it around in January. I mean, how can you be unhappy if you pick up a big pink bag?“

How indeed? Mrs Clinton has always seemed quite tough and unapproachable to me, so perhaps it makes sense that she’d carry a pretty pink bag to soften her look. And we certainly can’t fault her choice of designer. Perhaps we’ll have to start taking notice of Hillary’s other fashion selections!

Salvatore Ferragamo Handbags on eBay

Marni’s sometimes unorthodox approach to design is often to my liking. It takes a lot of risks, though, which means that sometimes things don’t always come out perfectly. Unfortunately, while the design of this bag is interesting, it’s not particularly appealing.

The blueberry color of the leather on this bag is really unique. It’s a cross between blue and lavender, and if I liked the actual design of the bag a tiny bit more, this is definitely the color I’d get it in. The texture is extremely smooth, which goes well with the puffy, slouchy style of the tote.

The design of this bag is a little, well, it’s just a little off. For a bag with minimal embellishment, it has a little too much going on for my taste. First, there’s the cutoff corners, which might work if there weren’t also a giant front pocket and a giant ribbon tie.

Honestly, I think everything on this bag is just a little too big, from its size to the ribbon. On a smaller scale or with more restraint, I think this general idea might be interesting, but the sum effect here is sloppy. The only reasonably-sized thing about the bag is the slim shoulder strap, and it is way too skinny for a bag this size.

DKNY is one of those lines that I want to like a lot more than I actually do. It does, after all, make affordable versions of current trends. But sometimes it doesn’t quite hit the nail on the head. This croc effect leather clutch is a good example of why I feel so ambivalent towards the line.

The cobalt blue leather has such a bold, exciting color that embossing it with a cheesy croc print seems like such a waste. The texture would never pass for authentic reptile skin, and it’s not over-the-top enough to be interesting as its own thing, so, frankly, why bother? This fabulous blue would have been just fine in plain old leather. It just didn’t need the treatment.

The shape of the bag is fine, if a little ho-hum. Sure, a bag this bold and bright doesn’t really need much to make it exciting, but it just looks like DKNY wasn’t trying. The unusual shape of the fold over flap doesn’t do much for me, and the giant central clasp is overdone and distracting. I just don’t think the style is cohesive.

The only thing I really do like is the strap. It has a graduated width and cool chain accents. Unfortunately, while the bag is affordable at $185, I still don’t think it’s interesting enough to pay for.

I know we have featured the Macy tote before, but I just had to share this unusual pattern with you.

This super luxurious leather Bally tote has been updated for the 21st century, or maybe for the 22nd! You see, instead of any already done pattern, Bally has given a thoroughly modern print. Part bold zebra stripes, part graphic (almost computerized) dots steadily growing larger as they move across the bag. Most purses will only dare to feature one such bold print, but almost as if they know you are going to pay thousands to own the Macy, the designers have given you two prints in the bargain!

And OK, OK,  so other than the print this is just the traditional Macy. Simple, with plenty of room, in a gorgeous luxury leather. Simple, classic and classy. The question is, therefore, whether you would willingly pay $895 for that simplicity?
