If anyone could match Lulu Guinness and her cheeky Lips purses, it’s flamboyant American designer Betsey Johnson. As part of her affordable Betseyville line, Johnson shows us some love with the Betsey’s Smooch.

Betsey Johnson has always loved accents and embellishments, and she uses some of her favorites here. The pouty lips shimmer in metallic gold, and are given a further dose of sass with black leopard spots. Thick black trim pulls the quirky design together.

Lulu Guinness’ Lips purses are clutches, but Betsey’s Smooch is a more practical cross-body. It’s a decent size, although that unusual mouth shape means it’s not really made for storing more than the bare essentials. The cross-body strap strikes the right balance between comfort and style. The chunky chains give the Betsey’s Smooch a healthy dose of edge, while its synthetic center will cushion your shoulder.

Not even a brown bag is basic when it’s created by Kathy Van Zeeland. The flamboyant designer stamps her inimitable style on this Boom Shaker shopper.

The name should clue you in; this shopper packs quite a punch. Rounded off pyramid studs and tiny round nailheads extend down from the shoulder straps. All that metal was probably enough, but Kathy Van Zeeland has never been a designer who knows when to say no. And so she adds tassels. And then she adds studs and rings to the tassels. Throw in some pleats for good measure and you’ve got one overwhelming handbag.

The purple tiger stripe lining looks like it’s ready for fun, but the Boom Shaker’s interior is actually pretty smart. There’s a large zippered compartment, and magnetic closure sections on either side of it, so keeping the Boom Shaker organized is pretty easy. In addition to the open and zip pockets we’ve come to expect, Kathy Van Zeeland has also added a pair of card pockets. What a great idea for a purse that will spend much of its time hitting the mall!

The Boom Shaker will be too much for conservative fashionistas, and too tacky for luxury lovers, but Kathy Van Zeeland has still earned her $99 here.

Valentino’s new designs haven’t been my favorite these past few seasons. Since the maestro’s retirement, the line has had a lot of stylistic ups and downs. Fortunately, this flower appliqued tote is firmly on the line’s up side.

The natural color of the tote looks totally organic. It’s so natural-looking, in fact, that it looks undyed, but there’s no way to tell for sure. I’m not always a big fan of floppy floral appliques, but the canvas material makes them a little less, well, floppy, and the subtle coloring makes them look very subdued.

I love the Mary Poppins’ style shape of this frame bag. Large bags with frame tops can be quite heavy, but Valentino has avoided some of this problem by using a relatively lightweight material. The nude leather straps and trim accent the pale color of the bag nicely. Overall, I’d say this is one of the most understated floral bags that I’ve seen all season.

Using canvas instead of a more luxurious material did not, apparently, help cut back on costs. At $2,150, this tote is seriously pricey. I like it, but I’m not sure I’d be willing to break a bank that big for unbleached canvas.

Roberto Cavalli is one of those designers that I don’t pay that much attention to. Perhaps because his flashy Italian style just doesn’t mesh well with my own, or perhaps because of the line’s prohibitively high price tags. Either way, he’s really surprised me this time. This Doctore Grande Diva python bag is truly spectacular.

I could rave for about six pages about the beauty of this python skin, but I’ll try to restrain myself. Seriously, though, it’s extraordinary. The material has been pieced together almost completely seamlessly, which reinforces the luxurious appearance of the bag. There’s just nothing to break up the natural beauty of the material.

The Doctor Grande Diva is sort of a combination between a doctor’s bag and a briefcase. It has the generous size of a doctor’s bag and the tailored design of a briefcase. There are two large exterior pockets to keep your organized, and two strap options for versatility.

Let’s be honest. This kind of luxury just doesn’t come cheap. $3,060 may seem a bit exorbitant, but actually, it’s not bad for the level of design and exotic skin.

Marc Jacobs has been one of my favorite designers for decades. His fresh American style always seems new, even when he’s going a little retro. This Vera satchel is a great addition to the line.

The smoothly pebbled green leather on the Vera is a rich earthy tone. The deep color is a fabulous way to add a little color to your wardrobe without it being too punchy or overwrought. The gold hardware offsets the color gorgeously, and adds to the overall warm effect.

What is really interesting about the Vera is the shape. It’s almost old-fashioned in its design. A rounded-off square, the Vera is ladylike without being girly at all. The flap front closure has an amazingly modern clasp that contrasts well with the vintage design, and you get the cool look of the padlock with the convenience of a hidden magnetic closure.

I am really impressed with the $695 price tag of the Vera. It’s well priced for the collection and for the quality.

Magid gets us in the mood for summer with this Clear Cane Clutch.

What I like most about summer is the season’s relaxed attitude. It’s a time when anything goes, and you can comfortably carry a cheap and cheerful clutch like this without worrying about looking like a cheapskate.

Make no mistakes folks, this isn’t a luxury clutch and it doesn’t pretend to be. Its woven straw body is finished nicely with bright, white, leatherette trim. A little more of that leatherette forms the long cross-body strap. It’s a bit skinny for my liking, but it should feel more comfortable on sensitive sunburned skin than the chains we typically see on clutch purses. The Clear Cane’s clear vinyl lining maintains the illusion of an open straw weave, but it saves our essential items from getting caught in the cracks.

The straw hides a little bit, but as with any clear clutch there isn’t a lot of mystery here. Everyone will be able to see what you’re carrying. You might insist you’ve got no secrets, but we all carry a few sensitive items from time to time. If you love this purse, you’ll need to adopt a real summer philosophy and let it all hang out.

For an affordable $63 though, it’s a bit easier to embrace the Clear Cane clutch’s casual vibes!

We’ve seen plenty of vegan leathers before, but Ju-Ju-Be’s Earth leather is a little bit different. It’s machine washable and lightweight and, at least according to its creators, it looks and feels like the genuine article.

Boho handbags don’t get much more sophisticated than the Sharlet bucket bag from Alla Leather Art.

This isn’t a fashion house I’ve heard a lot about, but this bucket bag makes me want to know more. It uses high quality leather to great effect. The drawstring top creates gentle pleats which emphasize just how soft this skin is. The material is left unembellished and uncluttered, allowing us to appreciate its natural pebbled finish. Long leather tassels are the only accents, and they give the Sharlet just the right amount of boho flair. I also appreciate the detachable straps, which allow us to carry the Sharlet as a shoulder bag or cross-body depending on our mood.

While I love what the drawstring closure brings to the look, I’m less enthusiastic about it on a practical level. These ties are always fiddly to use, and our items are never as secure as they’d be underneath a zip. I was hoping Alla Leather Art would at least include a zippered pocket inside, but there’s no joy. There is an open one for holding a cell phone or small camera, but I find myself longing for just one secure space!

But then I look at the price, and all is forgiven. I’d have expected to spend much more than $159 on this bucket bag, wouldn’t you?

Carmazzi 1bag will launch an innovative laptop case on March 15.

The world first accessory can easily convert into a handbag, backpack, and weekender. There is just one base model, but customers can buy a host of additional accessories to customize their Carmazzi 1bag.

We’re dying to see what such a versatile tech bag will look like, but Carmazzi 1bag is playing its cards close to their chest. The exterior hasn’t been revealed, but we do know a little about what’s inside.

The interior pockets will feature international communications and data connection access options. There are also all the traditional compartments for cell phones, MP3 players, and other high-tech essentials. Jet setters will also be happy to see spots for boarding passes, a camera, and data storage. A built-in USB charger, which can handle up to four gadgets, and a bag tracker provide the finishing flourishes.

Vieta delivers luxury looks for less with this Lepere clutch.

I was instantly struck by the combination of the faux fur covered flap and leatherette. These synthetic materials do a pretty good job of imitating their luxury counterparts, particularly considering the Lepere’s price of $59.95. Tiny golden studs encircling the center band complete the chic look.

This clutch doesn’t look like the rest of the pack, from the inside or the outside. When it comes the practicalities, that difference is a really good thing. Clutches are notoriously stingy on features, but not the Lepere. It has a sizable zippered pocket and open pouches ready to hold your cell phone and sunglasses. Of course with space and pockets to spare it’s tempting to overstuff the Lepere, but an adjustable shoulder strap should make it more manageable if you do!

The Lepere is available in a range of five colors, but this camel one is my pick. The tones are so natural, much more so than the jarring burgundy fur alternative! The olive purse with its brown fur flap also seems a bit odd; the contrast just doesn’t work for me. However I can’t criticize a label for giving us options, and Vieta has certainly done that!
