With the Abby we see Chocolate dress up its classic shoulder bag with some heavy metal.

Underneath this is really a stock standard shoulder bag, with a typical rectangular shape and unremarkable dimensions. But it’s made much more exciting with its metal mesh overlay. Interlocking silver rings allow the synthetic underneath to peek through, giving the Abba texture and drama. These details are only on the front though. I’m not surprised that Chocolate cut this corner considering the Abby’s affordable $38 price tag, but I’m still disappointed.

On a bigger bag all that metal could weigh you down, but we shouldn’t have that problem here. Of course, by keeping things small Chocolate’s also minimized our storage space. It’s very slender, so if you ever try to over-stuff it lumps and bumps will show. The Abby is the kind of bag you’ll use when stepping out for coffee or meeting the girls for lunch, but it probably won’t work for the office or busy weekends. Of course, for this price we won’t mind if its uses are a little limited.

The Abby is cheap and cheerful, and especially in this hot pink shade, very cute!

I feel like I spend the fall and winter seasons loving Anya Hindmarch and the spring and summer seasons wondering why. Perhaps it’s because she actually designs her fall and winter offerings, while in spring and summer she seems to just mass produce a bunch of canvas totes and slap witty prints on them. They’re slightly less expensive than last year’s, but I’m still not buying.

The electric blue color of the canvas on this Gym Kit tote is bright and cheerful. And the bow-tied jump rope print is sweet, if not a bit kitschy. Honestly, it doesn’t really look like a jump rope, it looks more like a floating pair of maracas and a ribbon, but hey, if this is what it takes to get you motivated to hit the gym, okay.

The shape is the same as all the other Hindmarch totes this season. It’s a solid style, generously sized and well-constructed. It doesn’t have a liner, which I find problematic, particularly because it’s meant for sweaty gym clothes. The leather handles are durable, but they also prevent the bag from being washable, which I also think is kind of a problem.

Basically, what it comes down to for me, though, is price. I just don’t see paying $125 for the little bit of cute this might add to my life. I’d rather invest in a couple of months of gym dues.

Bottega Veneta is one of those lines that can do no wrong in my eyes. Well, that’s not exactly 100% true, but for the most part their taste is beyond reproach. Which is why I’m a little surprised at how repelled I feel by the design of this intrecciato clutch. It just seems to garish to be Bottega.

The teal and turquoise snakeskin is what’s killing this bag for me. That must be it, because the rest of the design elements are Bottega signatures that I love every time. The colors are just so over the top. Maybe if it was just teal or just turquoise I could handle it, but I find the combination to be really overwhelming.

The rest of this clutch is great, so if these colors work for you, you might just love it. They certainly do bring out the texture of the snakeskin in an eye-catching way. And the classic knot design is one of my absolute favorites. Design-wise, you just don’t get any more classic and beautiful than this.

Tory Burch is the queen of preppy chic. From the Upper East Side to the Palm Beaches, no one does it like her. She’s also managed to garner a significant crossover audience by adding in a few more street smart styles. This Tory turn-lock shoulder bag, however, is pure preppy goodness.

Blue chambray makes me think of all those button down shirts that were so popular in the 1980s. But other than the effect of the leather, there’s nothing retro about the Tory. It’s so timeless that I would be hard-pressed to place it in any particular decade. In any case, the chambray effect leather is a genius choice; it has the crisp look of cotton with the durability of leather.

The shape of the Tory is so clean and unmuddied. It’s really hard to find any fault with its design. Actually, even though it’s completely out of keeping with my own personal taste, I just can’t seem to find anything wrong with it. The fresh lines are reinforced by the understated seaming, and the Burch logo gives the bag an almost nautical look.

$425 is great price to pay for a bag that can’t be dated. This is definitely one for the ages, folks.

OK, so you may not assume that a little patent leather clutch would cost $539.99, what with the number of other similar patent purses on the market. So what makes this sparky little character stand out from the rest?

Well, if I’m honest I’m not sure. The suede lining is soft and luxurious, and the patent is beautiful and glossy. However, this isn’t generally enough to make it worth quite so much moolah! Where is the remarkable design that takes it into the realm of the handbag elite?

Be & D may have aimed for the stars here, but I’m not sure it has achieved its goal. It has made something nice, don’t get me wrong, but is nice good enough?

The Beirn Jenna tote gets a complete revamp in this chain stitch version.

Whereas the previous version of the Jenna was all in one solid color, the designer has opted to make the newcomer much more visually interesting. That genuine snakeskin offers a distinctive pattern and a combination of colors and textures that make it clear this is an expensive and luxury piece. In addition, it has added a new design feature, a chunky golden chain cleverly stitched into the leather and around the handle.

It is this chain that gives the Jenna Chain Stitch its name, and the metal work is probably this tote’s biggest selling point. Well, that and the expensive exotic materials. However, I do have a little doubt about whether I like the look of the many different patterns, which seem to collide in a slightly over-the-top way. Still, I suppose this is just a matter of personal taste.

If the much more dramatic design and snakeskin make you want to buy the Jenna, then you will need to shell out a painful (but not unexpected) $600. Ouch!

New York designer Gail Riggs has collaborated with the Susan B. Anthony House on a limited edition replica of the feminist icon’s favorite alligator handbag.
