Marc by Marc Jacobs has really been piling on the well-priced modern classics. This Jane On A Chain bag is a great addition to its light spring collection.

The combination of white raffia and white leather gives the Jane bag a very summery look. The smooth leather of the front flap and the nubbly raffia contrast in a way that instantly reminds me of Easter. It’s like the delicious smoothness of white leather Easter shoes and a child’s carrying basket have been combined in this one delightful accessory.

No matter what childish combination the Jane recalls for me, the design itself is very grown up. The rectangular shape is nicely mimicked by the rectangular clasp, and the warmth of the gold hardware sets off the cool tone of the leather beautifully.

All in all, you really couldn’t ask for a sweeter take on classic style, especially for the eminently reasonable $230 price tag.

Get glamorous evening looks with plenty of bling thanks to La Regale.

This particular brand is rarely subtle, but sometimes this is just what you want for an evening bag. Glitz, and sparkle, to make you stand out from the crowd. And this is exactly what you get with this glittery clutch, thanks to the vast amount of diamanté gems that are covering the entire black fabric body.

Thankfully this over the top glitz is set on a solid black background. Any color other than the classic black silver combo would have been dramatic overkill. As it is, the label keeps things simple, and throws in a little surprise with the gathered fabric top, which opens up to give you plenty of easy access.

This is the ideal purse for someone wanting to sparkle under those disco lights, but do bear in mind what happens if those gems fall off!

Alexander Wang has sort of a trunk theme going on this season. Oddly, though, this is the only bag that actually looks like a trunk to me. The effect is really cool on the Jade, but honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about it as an actual, usable accessory.

The combination of materials on the Jade is extraordinary. There’s no actual colors involved, just varying shades of white, but the texture keeps the look super dimensional. Plus the rose gold hardware is an amazingly bright and eye-catching touch.

The Jade is like a little mini steamer trunk. As an object, I think it’s amazing, and I love the idea of it lying half-open on my dresser. As a handbag, however, I’m not really so sure. It’s kind of awkward and clunky to be carrying around, especially on a tiny wrist strap. Overall, I just think that Wang’s thinky side got the better of him, and while the Jade is very cool, it’s not really that practical.

Some women might be willing to make the $795 investment for the sake of quirkiness, but I’ll be saving my money until Wang’s next release.

MICHAEL Michael Kors has recently become one of my more favored diffusion lines. Unfortunately, this cotton twill tote is so terribly ugly that it’s making me rethink my opinion entirely. I don’t know whether this bag is a fluke or whether his more successful designs are.

The cotton twill on this bag would be fine if it weren’t for the frayed seam detail. I don’t really think that frayed seams are ever a good look, but especially not on an already pretty plain bag that purports to be designer. Plus, the way that the milky, faded-looking color mixes with the tan leather is just plain dull.

The shape of this tote is also dull. Honestly, it looks like the kind of thing you might pick up in a college bookstore for under $3. So, I guess it might be fine for a college student just looking for any old thing to lug their books around in, but I seriously doubt that any student will willingly shell out a whopping $295 for this tote. Seriously, MK, what are you thinking?

A handbag that converts from one shape to another is pretty much two bags for the price of one, which is just what we want in these hard financial times!

Christopher Kon is an expert at producing handbags that manage to be unusual looking at the same time as being practical. The Carter tote is no exception.

The simple cream leather body is made interesting by the very cool stylized orange handle, and then the practicality is added through the multiple interior pockets and the easy way in which it folds to become a handy shoulder bag. In fact, those pockets are quite remarkable. They are both inside and outside, and should appeal to anyone with an inclination towards organization.

Whilst the design may lean towards practicality, that doesn’t make this purse unfashionable. In fact, this Co-Lab by Christopher Kon satchel is gorgeous, albeit in an understated way. It lets that gorgeous luxury leather speak for itself.

Thanks to its convertible nature the Carter fold-over tote is one of the few bags I think justifies the $384 price tag.

Oh my, this cosmetic case from Alla Leather Art looks like its fit for royalty! Thankfully it doesn’t come with a king-sized price tag attached.

Seriously, can’t you just imagine this elegant case sitting on the dresser of royalty-in-waiting, Katherine Middleton? She’d gaze at it as she brushes her hair, thinking about the right shade of eye shadow and lipstick to wear to the charity gala she’ll attend later that night.

I imagine it’d look just as gorgeous on my dresser though. I love the way its golden trim contrasts against the pebbled red leather, and that little snap lock which keeps your cosmetics safely inside. Open up the lid to reveal the full length mirror underneath, a clever addition for those touch-ups on the run. Once it’s opened that lid will stay upright, so using the mirror while you’re applying make-up is a breeze.

This cosmetic case looks like it’s meant to stay put, but it’s surprisingly transportable. It’ll collapse right down when it’s empty for easy packing. Most of us probably won’t use this feature though, as any time we want to move our cosmetics case we’ll likely want to shift the make-up inside it too. Still, it’s hard to criticize a label for offering extra features.

At $69 you can probably find cheaper cosmetics cases, but I doubt you’ll find one as stylish.

It’s been a busy time in the fashion world, with high end designers showcasing their latest collections at recent Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Now that the celebrations have drawn to a close we can take stock of the handbag trends we can expect to see in fall.

Everything old is new again, with handbags taking inspiration from fashion’s past. While a handful of designers looked to the Art Deco and Depression periods, most took inspiration from the more colorful retro decades of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Red handbags gave a pop of color to the runways around the world. This vivid tone was paired with classic conservative tones like black, white, brown, and shades of gray. Its sister shade, burgundy, also featured prominently, as did forest green, and dark mustard.

The top handle satchel, or Lady Bag as it is commonly called, will be back with a vengeance. The style was popularized in the 1930s, and remained a fashion staple through to the 1960s. Today the Louis Vuitton Alma, the Lady Dior from Christian Dior, and Celine’s doctor bag bring the style to a brand new generation of fashion lovers.

Clutches are getting larger and moving from after-five staples to daytime must haves. Viktor & Rolf and Nina Ricci showed some of the next season’s best, but they were seen in virtually every runway show in neutrals and rich fall shades.

Shoulder bags are always popular in one way or another, and in fall it’ll be no exception. This season’s purses have long shoulder straps which help them sit comfortably on your hip, and embellished flap closures.

Is it a handbag or is it Cousin It’s more rebellious brother? It’s the Jerome hobo from Vieta!

I thought I’d seen studs arranged in every possible way over the last year, but Vieta has come up with something new here. The polished metal circles dot the synthetic fringe, which hangs down like a curtain over the Jerome. It creates such a distinctive look that I know it’ll polarize audiences, but I think it might just be quirky enough to work.

At first I thought the Jerome was a basic black, but on closer examination I see it’s actually a deep, rich violet hue. I really like this dark shade as it’s conservative enough to wear anywhere and with anything, but also just a little bit different.

I thought we might have to fight through the fringe to open the Jerome up, but thankfully that’s not the case. A zip runs along the top, revealing a leopard printed interior which is every bit as wild as the Jerome’s exterior. It still does the job though, with synthetic trimmed zip and open pockets in the side walls.

For me the real clincher is the price. It’s difficult to find any handbag for less than $50, much less one which makes such an original style statement!

The Low Country in South Carolina will get America’s first Brandina Handbags store. The Italian label’s premiere US boutique will open on King Street next month.

Brandina accessories will bring the “essence of the Italian Riveria” in the 1950s to the United States with their casual resort styles and bright, bold colors. In fact, the bags are made from the same fabric used on vintage Italian sun loungers and beach chairs. That should make them ideal beach bags, because we already know they can withstand salty sea air!

Brandina recently hit the headlines when its casual handbags were part of the swag given to presenters at the Grammy Awards. I’m sure the Italian label are counting on those musical stars carrying those new Brandina bags around soon, preferably in front of some paparazzi lenses!

The South Carolina store is the first Brandina boutique to open outside Europe. Currently the purses are only available at Bottega Brandina stores in Italy and Spain. The label is also contemplating opening outlets in La Jolla, Laguna Beach, Miami, Coral Gables, and Las Vegas. It sounds like Brandina’s got big plans for the United States. Tylie Malibu channels boho style with this relaxed Gypsy Samantha bucket bag.

There’s a place for a casual approach to design, particularly when creating an everyday accessory, but I worry that Tylie Malibu has been too relaxed here. In fact, it seems like the label was barely trying. Tylie Malibu gathers up the leather in a fairly haphazard way. Some girls may appreciate the way it all seems to come together with such little effort, but I think it’s a bit messy.

Not that the Gypsy Samantha is without its charms. That distressed leather is really lovely, especially in this deep hunter green shade. I’m also a fan of those chiseled studs, which are that bit more interesting than the metal accents we typically see.

But I really can’t imagine making the Gypsy Samantha my everyday handbag. If that slovenly shape didn’t put me off completely, the drawstring would. It’s perfect for a bag with such boho styling, but not for a girl who wants to access her items with a minimum of fuss. We’ll have plenty of space for everything we want to carry, but good luck finding anything in that unstructured interior.

At $598 the Gypsy Samantha isn’t exorbitant, particularly for a bag made from such superior leather, but it also costs more than I’d want to pay.
