Those zip pockets are the centerpiece of this bag, which is a really good thing. I love it when an element makes a bag aesthetically pleasing and practical, and these pockets do both things well. The brassy hardware works with the tan glazed leather body to create a Western vintage vibe, and there’s plenty of space for the items you want on hand. It’s really a win-win!

The Maraka is a really tall tote though, so I’d carry the essentials in the pockets. Otherwise you’ll end up spending far too long scrounging for them at the bottom of the bag. Thankfully there are two open pouches inside and a zip pocket too, so you’re going to easily find enough places for keeping those small items in check.

The handles are long enough to sling over your shoulder, but that’s not the only way we can wear it. Nine West also offers a much longer strap to help us convert the Maraka to a cross-body. Its look is much more casual, but also more convenient for busy days.

The Maraka ticks all the boxes for me. It’s stylish, versatile, well made, and convenient. And what’s more, at $139 it’s affordable to boot!

I’ve always thought of clutch purses as stylish but fairly impractical accessories for nights on the town. But Ellington has made me change my point of view with this surprising Amelia travel clutch.

The Amelia shuns glitter and glitz for old fashion functionality. While its bright pink nylon finish pops, that’s not really the point of this purse. It’s got a job to do, and it knows it.

It’s large by clutch standards, but it needs to be to cram all its features inside. You can see the slip and flap pocket on the front, but that only skims the surface. The interior is jam-packed with bits and pieces designed to make life a bit easier. There are two open pockets for gadgets, a zippered pocket for valuables, and even a key clip.

Such a spacious purse could have been unmanageable if we were expected to clutch it the old fashioned way, but practical Ellington has thought of that too. It offers a wrist loop or a longer cross-body strap to make your journey more comfortable. There are also loops on the back which allow you to slip it through a belt and wear it that way.

Ellington gives us a lot of value for a very small amount of money. At $34, this practical purse is a steal.

Juicy Couture is appealing to a whole new generation with this Gen Y Sugar Kiss tote.

Its silvery sequined lips are the star attraction here, and they really are striking. The shiny kiss is set against a baby pink cotton background, which has all of the femininity we expect from a Juicy Couture design.

Happily, the Gen Y Sugar Kiss doesn’t have as many frills as your average Juicy Couture bag. It’s taken uncharacteristic restraint for the label to let those lips do the talking. The rest of the tote is fairly plain really, with a traditional shape and design. Even the embroidered Juicy logo is unusually low key.

I expect very little from a classic cotton canvas tote, so I’m always surprised when a designer delivers more than space and a simple clasp. Juicy Couture does though, with a hanging zippered compartment and cell phone pouch. It’s those tiny organizational touches which makes this tote that much more appealing.

And then there is the price, a very reasonable $98. After seeing so many designers charging a small fortune for a basic tote, this inexpensive one is looking even better!

eBay is giving fashion fans another opportunity to spruce up their spring wardrobe when it opens the doors of its Fashion Vault tomorrow. Following its recent Spring Fling sale, eBay is doing it all again with a women’s shoes and handbags clearance.

There’s a great selection of handbags from Perlina, Carla Mancina, Co-Lab by Christopher Kon, and Chez. Then you can keep your feet covered with shoes from Betsey Johnson or L.A.M.B. The accessories are all available at discounts of up to 70% off the recommended retail prices, so there’s the potential to save plenty. As always, eBay really has offered items for everybody here. Perlina bags are classic yet affordable, while those from Carla Mancini are a bit more fashion forward. Every season the fashion industry seems to create handbags that make bagistas like us drool. Now Design Museum looks bag at these key purses with its new book, Fifty Bags That Changed the World.

Narrowing the bags down to just 50 must have been a daunting task, although there were certainly some no brainers. The stories behind the Chanel 2.55, Fendi baguette, and Hermes Birkin and Kelly bags are predictable inclusions, but there are some surprises too.

The book also looks at the bags who’ve cared more about getting the job done than looking good, including the bicycle pannier, World War II gas-mask bag, and even the humble plastic shopping bag. There are also some flamboyant purses that changed the course of fashion, including Vivienne Westwood’s limited edition fanny pack for Louis Vuitton and Moschino’s Fudge the Fashionista’s handbag.

Fifty Bags That Changed the World explores the aesthetic appeal and functional design that made each inclusion a special part of the accessories world. It will hit bookstore shelves everywhere on April 5 for $20, which is considerably less than most of the bags included in its pages! However Amazon currently has it available for pre-order at a substantial 39% discount, so why not get a jump on the competition and save your pennies?

Puma celebrates its heritage with this retro styled Kick Grip gym bag.

It’s new season stock, but this Kick Grip could have easily stepped out of the 1970s. That brown leatherette body is very retro cool, and the popping white formstripe is another throwback to the past. Look closer and you’ll see this Puma signature is perforated to allow your gym gear to breathe.

By choosing synthetic rather than the more traditional nylon or polyester materials, Puma has given this Kick Grip bag a real sense of luxury. It’s not as opulent as leather, but no one wants to carry their sweaty sneakers and gym socks in something truly luxe, do they? The synthetic does the trick, and it sees this gym bag priced at an affordable $55. Personally I think it’s worth the compromise, but fashion snobs may disagree!

The Kick Grip is more structured than many gym bags, so it doesn’t lend itself to overstuffing. However it is quite sizable, so most of us won’t be tempted to overfill it. The shoulder straps are also a shade shorter than I’d like, but again we see a decision guided by fashion rather than functionality.

It’s got its limitations but Puma’s Kick Grip bag can certainly do the job in the gym, and look fab while doing it!

Roxy delivers another solid, and surprisingly stylish, everyday bag with this Lightning purse.

Perhaps it’s time that we were no longer surprised by Roxy’s accessory efforts. In recent years the brand has convincingly made the leap from surf label to fashion force, so it’s time we silenced those internal critics once and for all. It’s still not really mastered cutting edge designs, but its purses are generally good looking and functional, not to mention appropriate once summer ends.

Given its budget $42 price tag, we wouldn’t expect leather here. But we also wouldn’t expect a synthetic of such quality. Its weathered finish is really striking, particularly in this olive shade. It’s much paler than many olive greens and a little grayer too. In fact, it’s almost a metallic shade, although it’s toned down just enough for everyday use.

The Lightning’s shape doesn’t excite me, but it’s very smart considering this sling bag’s everyday application. It’s deep enough to carry everything you could want it to, and its flat base will help it sit up once it’s set down. The single strap can be slung casually and comfortably over your shoulder or across your body for a more relaxed look.

I’m not completely wowed by the Lightning, but it’s hard not to be impressed by it, especially considering its very reasonable bottom line.

Target has angered Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez by selling a bag virtually identical to their iconic PS1 purse. While the original Proenza Schouler accessory costs a few thousand dollars, you can own a similarly styled Mossimo messenger for just $34.95.

McCollough and Hernandez became aware of the Mossimo messenger’s resemblance to the PS1 when McCollough’s sister e-mailed her sibling a photo of the offending purse. The designers were especially upset considering their relationship with Target. They worked with the department store through the GO International designers program, and some of those items were recently re-released to celebrate the initiative’s fifth anniversary.

“So our product is in Target right now, and then this bag comes out,” Proenza Schouler’s chief executive Shirley Cook told The Times. “It’s just disappointing, especially from someone we worked with.“

McCullough said he could understand the practicality of a more affordable version, but wished Target would stop selling the Mossimo messenger. After all, shouldn’t Target’s collaboration with Proenza Schouler have given customers all the affordable Proenza Schouler style goodies they needed?

No one’s talking lawsuits at this point, but it’ll be interesting to see what the designers do if Target doesn’t remove the bags from their shelves. Looking at the two bags yourself, should this case end up in the courts?

Proenza Schouler PS1 Bags on eBay

Kate Spade reinvents the classic quilted flap bag for the space age with her Gold Coast Evangeline shoulder bag.

This purse takes its cues from the classic designs of Chanel, with its turn-lock clasp, front flap, quilting and chain handle. But Kate Spade has tweaked a few of these elements to give her purse individuality and edge. The pyramid turn-lock is stunning, and I love the point of difference that the vertical quilting brings. The metallic finish is the cherry on top. The platinum is a little too glitzy for my taste, as I think it makes the leather body appear a bit cheap. However, I appreciate its uniqueness. You won’t find a Chanel purse with such shine after all!

The Gold Coast Evangeline’s slender design makes it look very chic, but it does limit storage space a bit. You won’t be carrying fat novels inside it, but with some careful packing it should hold everything you really need it to. And with its leather reinforced pockets, it’ll keep those essentials organized too.

I’m not sure Kate Spade has improved on the classics with the Gold Coast Evangeline, but if you love glitz I’m sure you’ll appreciate Kate Spade’s design vision.

Pop artist Nelson De La Nuez has signed a deal with Icon Shoes which will see him release an accessories line in the spring of 2012.

Thankfully for us handbag lovers, the collection doesn’t stop at footwear. It’s also set to feature handbags, tablet cases, and other leather goods, all emblazoned with De La Nuez’s bright pop art designs. Apparently white leather will feature prominently in the range to make De La Nuez’s vivid color choices really stand out.

De La Nuez is also famous for creating art on all sides of his canvases, a technique which he calls “Art on the Edge.” He’ll incorporate this design trademark into his fashion items.

Icon vice president Carolyn Morris said she hopes that welcoming De La Nuez, who has a huge following amongst baby boomers, to the Icon stable will increase the brand’s appeal.

“I was attracted to his work the minute it was spotted in a La Jolla art gallery by the way the imagery was brought to life and the colors that will resonate instantly with a modern consumer,” she said.

And it seems that Nelson De La Nuez is just as excited to be working with Icon.

“I am excited to be working with a high quality company like Icon and look forward to seeing the outcome of my completed collection,” he said.
