I’m never quite sure what I’m going to get with Anya Hindmarch. She might deliver a kitschy overpriced canvas tote, or she might offer a stylish little leather number. While those canvas bags are starting to bore me, this Bonita purse has made me sit up and take notice.

In a more reserved shade I might have passed the Bonita by, but in this summery teal green I fell hard. Not that the Bonita is without its own charms. The vintage inspired flap design is always a winner, and its vertical seams give it a bit more personality. The shoulder strap is another element with flair; I love the way the mix of leather swatches and golden chain works here to make the strap comfortable and chic.

The Bonita looks to be a good everyday size, but its slender design brings some limitations. You’ll need to pack it carefully, and perhaps even leave some of the items you consider essential behind. It’s not going to look as sophisticated overstuffed after all, so be sure to show some restraint. Do you really need that kitchen sink?

The Bonita is the kind of bag that could set off your evening ensemble or dress up your favorite pair of jeans. We’re not getting a whole lot of bag for our dollar, but I still see value for $950.

Why have just one pattern or texture on a handbag, when you can have three of each?

The first texture is at the base of this Pietro Alessandro tote: that glossy patent leather. The shiny fabric also offers the first pattern, that fine snakeskin-esque print. The second pattern is a little more abstract, and set at a dramatic juxtaposition to the plain blackness. The brown and yellow color scheme of this is a little 70s office block, but this may be just what you are after! The final element, and the third tier, is the brown snakeskin top, completing the contrasting trio.

If there wasn’t enough detail in the choices of the leather alone, the designers have added a double row of big gold studs. They help define the shape of this clutch, although they may be a little over the top.

If the idea of an exotic patterned leather tote has got you excited, then you will no doubt be pleased to know that the inside is as practical as the outside dramatic. You get a big center compartment as well as pockets, which makes this purse entirely suitable for work, especially since the brown shades are quite office-appropriate too.

Excuse the pun, but Mary Frances has really taken the biscuit with the doggy-themed Fetch clutch.

I know there are a lot of doggy people out there. People who love their pup more than life itself, who take part in dog shows and spend half the week giving their pampered pooches baths. They may even have an urge to dress their dogs up in little outfits, coordinating with their own. I am not sure, however, if this means there there is a viable market full of people who have been desperately waiting for a handbag that allows them to show off this side of their personalities.

Sure, beading can make for an interesting purse, but I’m just not sure that Mary Frances’ novelty tendencies needed to stretch to covering a beaded bag with a dog, bone and even a leash. It just looks ridiculous, and whilst it is bound to catch people’s eyes, I am not convinced that it would be in a good way!

Whilst true canine obsessives may fall head over heels for this decorative beaded purse, I sense the majority of people will have to raise an eyebrow in its direction.

When I heard Anuschka had created a drawstring bag, I was nervous. How would the label’s hand painted works of art fare once they were puckered up with a drawstring? The answer is, remarkably well.

Anuschka has carefully chosen abstract designs so they’re not disfigured too much by the soft pleating. This shoulder bag is also more structured than many drawstring purses, so we can sit back and appreciate that portable work of art. Like all good art, it won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it won’t alienate anyone who’s loved Anuschka bags in the past. Its color palette is familiar, and the floral design modern, yet feminine.

I think Anuschka has done well designing this bag around the drawstring closure, but I also wonder why it’s bothered. These kinds of closures are notoriously fiddly, and not as secure as many options. Anuschka sets our mind at ease by adding a magnetic closure, but why choose a drawstring when it won’t do the job?

The interior is much more practical, with plenty of space and pockets too. You’ll even find a key holder, which will put an end to scrounging around for your house and car keys. With so much space on offer this shoulder bag may get heavy, but the long shoulder straps should make carrying it that much easier.

At $245 this Anuschka bag is a bit expensive for a drawstring purse, but also dirt cheap for a work of art. When viewed as this rather than a mere accessory, bagistas are getting a bargain.

Italian leather label Cambardi is back in business, with a collection of handbags and jewelry added to its regular luggage line.

If you like to stand out in a crowd, you’ll be happy to know that all the purses can be completely customized. Cambardi will make them in any size, and in virtually any color or kind of material. With 80 different colors to choose from, Cambardi seems to be serious! Traditionalists can choose canvas or leather, or splash out on a bag in ostrich or crocodile.

And the customization doesn’t end with the exterior. Cambardi customers can also choose their own linings, hardware, and even personalized engravings.

Of course, that level of personalization doesn’t come cheaply. The basic Cambardi bag costs £700, but you can expect to pay up to £12, 000 if you’re indulging in some of those high end exotics. Antik Batik brings some edge to the traditional tote with the Oslo.

I thought I’d seen all the tricks to create rock and roll atmosphere, but Antik Batik takes an original path. There are no studs or grommets, just a smattering of delicate metal beads. These tiny square accents are clustered around the base, but applied with more restraint throughout the bag. I’m not sure how long we can expect to keep them all, but unlike so many embellishments the Oslo’s appeal won’t be diminished if we lose a few.

I’m disappointed that Antik Batik has kept the beading to the front though. It’s the sort of corner cutting I expect to see on a cheap and cheerful bag, not one costing $485. Without these details the Oslo looks like just another bland black tote, the last thing any of us want when we’re spending around $500.

Sadly there’s more corner-cutting inside. The Oslo is spacious, with a large zip pocket and pair of slip pouches with gadgets. No complaints there, but without leather trim I worry about how they’ll hold up. It’s those little touches that help to separate the high end labels from the lesser ones. And let’s face it; even many labels dealing with synthetic trim their pockets.

I’m not sure Antik Batik has done enough to convince me to part with my cash, but if you care more about style than substance I’m sure the Oslo will tempt you.

Daryl K has added accessories to its contemporary fashion line for spring 2011.

The label is starting small, with just two bags and two ankle boots. The cutely named Jeanius is a large nappa leather tote, which sells for $695. The Shackleton is a more luxe option at $895. I’m not sure I see an additional $200 of value, but this cowhide leather messenger is still very stylish.

If shoes are your thing you can choose between the Chelsea Girl, for $525, or the Kerrigan Cowgirl, priced at $550. The Chelsea Girl is great for anyone who loves flats, while the Kerrigan Cowgirl has a bit more style with its small heel. The Kerrigan Cowgirl boots are also available in black, brown, and beige to help you easily incorporate them into your wardrobe.

Designer Daryl Kerrigan recently told Women’s Wear Daily that she recognized the need for accessories “women would want to wear every day.” With Daryl Kerrigan returning to the runway this season, the expansion into accessories seemed only natural.

I really like the marriage of practicality and polish in the Shackleton, but I’m not particularly excited by the rest of the Daryl K accessories. Still, there’s certainly potential for some great shoes and purses to come out of Daryl K in the coming years.

Anne Klein walks on the wild side with this Star Studded satchel.

This is the kind of purse that might just be too much. It’s called Star Studded, but its metal hardware almost gets lost in those leopard spots. Animal prints are always striking, but in case we missed it Anne Klein has put metallic sparkle over the top. Honestly I don’t think it needed this extra treatment, but more flamboyant fashion fans may disagree! It certainly doesn’t look as tacky as it might have, but it’s just a bit unnecessary.

You wouldn’t know it to look at it, but the Star Studded satchel takes its job seriously. It’s a great everyday size; large but not so big that we’ll struggle to manage it. A zippered pocket and two open gadget slips are built into the side walls to make staying organized even easier.

The handles are long enough to easily slip over your shoulder, but if you’ve got some traveling to do you may prefer the longer, adjustable strap. Just clip it on and you’re ready to wear the Star Studded satchel across your body.

The Star Studded’s looks are polarizing, but if you love your satchels loud you’ll see real value here for $99.

Gucci is one of those household name sorts of lines. Although it has gone through many changes in the past few decades, I love when it revisits their classic, equestrian-inspired aesthetic. Especially when it adds contemporary new twists, as it’s done on this gorgeous python shoulder bag.

The deep, rich green color on this bag is classic Gucci. The black accents bring out the texture of the python skin and adds a subtle tonal contrast. Part of the genius of this bag lies in its subtlety. The colors have been used in a way that adds to python’s natural dramatic flair, but not in an ostentatious way. The gold hardware keeps the look posh and classy.

The classic pouch shape of this shoulder bag is one of my favorites. It’s a little bit 70s, particularly when combined with the boho beaded tassels. Honestly, I could do without the tassels. They distract from the generally clean look of the bag. The elaborate clasp features an ornate version of Gucci’s traditional horsebit design.

Overall, this is one of the best new Gucci bags I’ve seen in a long time. It’s classic, but modern, and totally luxurious. It’s everything I want from Gucci.
