Burberry is known for having a classic, pared-down aesthetic, but in the past few seasons the line has transformed into something much more cutting edge. This studded leather bowling bag is the perfect example of how the British brand is able to combine its traditional quality with modern trends.

The black leather on this bowler has the perfect balance of softness and stiffness. The body of the bag is supple enough to keep the structure of the bag intact without making it look stiff, but the buckled straps are of a heavier leather that keeps them in place. The silver hardware has been kept to a minimum, excepting the studs, of course, which keep the bag edgy without appearing over-adorned.

I don’t usually care much for bowlers. I find their squarish shape to be a bit clunky, but this is definitely an exception. It is a bit boxy, but it seems in keeping with the bag’s rock ‘n’ roll edginess. The large size of the bag is a lot to handle, but women who like to take everything everywhere will be more than thrilled. Lighter-packing women like myself might find it more useful as an overnighter.

Whatever you use this bowler for, it’s sure to be a great edgy addition to any wardrobe. Even if, at $2795, the price is a little steep.

For a while it seemed as if once you’d seen one Longchamp bag, you’d seen them all. However lately I’ve been refreshed to see new styles and shapes from the European fashion house. This cute Snap Hobo shows another side of the iconic label.

I must admit, I’ve never seen Longchamp create such an adorable purse. It’s got the familiar crescent shape of a traditional hobo, but much more structure than bags of this ilk. That makes it appear much more refined than all those boho accessories. The rich fuchsia colored leather is poppy, and the logo stamped studs give the Snap some real personality. I wouldn’t say that this design is revolutionary by any means, but it’s a great change of pace.

What you might not see at first glance is the trio of exterior pockets strategically hidden behind those studs. Unlike so many exterior pockets, they securely close with snaps, so you can feel safe using them to hold keys and cell phones. If you’re searching for more organizational space look to the zippered pocket inside the generous but slim interior.

Longchamp probably could have done more here, but for $360 I’m impressed with the strides the label’s taken. The Snap Hobo is a purse with real charm.

With a name like David Shock, the designer of this tote was always destined to shake the fashion industry up. He’s done just that here, taking humble orange construction fencing and turning it into a poppy retro tote.

The Ornj Bag is clever designed with its material’s natural perforations forming a 60s inspired pattern. This material is also tough, flexible, and lightweight, all qualities that transfer to the tote itself.

And let’s not forget that David Shock’s work keeps the industrial plastic out of landfill. He sources his material from abandoned fields and work sites, tidies it up, and then works his magic.

That’s not the only material Shock is saving though. The base of each tote is made from old plastic signs! A sustainable bamboo handle completes this innovative design.

The use of shiny plastic also makes this tote very easy to keep clean. Just rinse it with water and use a mild detergent to get rid of any marks, and this tote should stay that vibrant shade of orange for years.

While the plastic is tough, it’s also prone to stretching. If its overloaded the tote could lose its shape, and in the most extreme case the handles could tear clean off. It should be able to handle a regular load, but I wouldn’t go using it as a grocery tote for soda bottles and large cans.

At an affordable $40 though I don’t think we can fault the Ornj Bag’s limitations. They’re part and parcel of David Shock’s material, which has enough charm to make us forget about its flaws.

Recycled Plastic Totes on eBay

For ladylike looks without the astronomical price tags, look to this Ally tote from London Fog.

The label knows a lot about classic good looks, and it doesn’t think only the elite should afford them. This Ally looks like a real lady with its gleaming turnlock closure and soft rolled handles. A more sophisticated creature would have had more structure, but I concede that casual shape helps the tote work for a few more situations. You needn’t be at a buttoned-up affair to get away with this classic beauty.

With that rich looking hardware I almost didn’t notice that this tote is made from synthetic rather than genuine leather. This manmade skin does a commendable imitation of the genuine article, although it’s not as soft as the real thing. However girls on a budget always have to make compromises, and the material is an obvious one.

At $150 the Ally isn’t expensive, but it also costs slightly more than I’d willingly spend on a synthetic purse. There are many leather bags that cost a similar price, and they’ll probably make you feel a bit more pampered. However if you’ve fallen hard for the style, or you can find it on sale, you’ll enjoy its classic good looks for years to come.

Lodis gets sexy with suede with this San Marino Natasha hobo.

I’ve never really thought of Lodis as fashion forward, but the usually staid label seems to be shaking things up a bit with its most recent accessories. Suede is an inspired choice for a hobo. It’s one of the softest materials around, so it slouches in all the right places. In deep red it appears even richer, like the curtain at an old fashioned theater or a plush antique couch. The crocodile embossing gives it a more modern touch. I’m not always a fan of the treatment, but here it’s so subtle that it adds texture without making the purse tacky.

I wouldn’t say the San Marino Natasha is Lodis’ most practical purse, but it doesn’t let us down either. We find two organizational slots inside and a zippered pocket too lined with more of that suede to help it last. The pale creamy lining isn’t the smartest choice as it’ll quickly show stains, but at least they’ll be hidden away.

Suede is notoriously quick to wear so you’ll need to handle it carefully to get your $388 worth. But if you can keep it clean and scuff free, this hobo will make a stylish statement for several seasons to come.

European accessories label Ash has entered the United States with the opening of its first American store. New Yorkers can now shop for the brand’s footwear, handbags, and other leather accessories at 44 Mercer Street, SoHo.

The store is an imposing site spanning 2300 square feet, with high ceilings, modern design, and wood and metal displays. Currently it stocks men’s and women’s wear, although the Ash kids collection will also arrive in late summer.

It’s taken some time for Ash to arrive in America. Patrick Ithier and Leonello Calvani launched their label in 2000. Their vision of melding French luxury design with Italian leather and expertise remains as pertinent now as it did at the brand’s inception more than a decade ago.

“We are thrilled to bring the Ash store to America,” Patrick Ithier said.  “There is already such an amazing Ash brand identity in the US and we are excited that our customers and fans will now have a flagship store location where they can go to shop.“

The New York store is Ash’s 14th boutique, after locations in the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Greece, Japan, Korea, and Australia. In August Ash will open two new stores: one in Athens and the other in Copenhagen. The label also plans to open outlets in Taipei, Milan, Seoul, and other global locations in the coming months.

It sounds like world domination is on the agenda for Ash!

Jimmy Choo’s take on animal print bags is so much classier than average. The Gwen combines the sassy attitude of leopard spots with sophisticated urban elements that make it a perfectly balanced, perfectly beautiful bag.

The combination of materials on the Gwen is masterful. The snake-embossed black leather is shiny and multi-dimensional and it contrasts gorgeously with the fur texture of the calf skin. The subtle blurring of the leopard pattern makes the pattern seem a little softer and less extreme than it could be, which is more suitable for a bag that you’ll want to carry everywhere.

The design of the Gwen is almost luggage-inspired. Actually, it looks kind of like a little tiny steamer trunk. The beautifully chosen details  are modern, but timeless. Matt & Nat continue to try to convince us that vegan leather doesn’t have to be unfashionable.

Shape-wise, I think the designing duo has succeeded. The folded main body and the slight envelope styling of that curvy front flap lend themselves to a purse that is quite fashion forward and stylish. Add in the five pretty metal studs, and you are into real fashion territory. The only area I hesitate, therefore, is when it comes to the color. I know that tans and caramel brown shades are harder to get right than, say, a default black, but the mottled golden color reminds me of those maps and letters you used to dye with teabags in history class. It isn’t particularly luxurious, and it is a little too bright to really look classy.

Still, this is really just a matter of personal taste. If the Vance clutch does float your boat, then you know that there are many reasons for it to do so. The eco-friendly synthetic vegan leather and the fact that Matt & Nat have provided two handle options, to mention but two.

In a world of genuine leather and less eco-friendly morals, this is a purse perfect for people who like to wear fashion without paying any sort of animal price.
