Fashion is always retro obsessed, but the 80s and 90s trend seems to have lasted an especially long time, don’t you think? Luckily, those were both great decades for me, and for accessories. This Robyn hobo takes cues from both eras and restyles them for modern gals in a super hip way.

The color of this bag is totally early 90s. The color was part of that whole jewel tone trend back then, but it still looks rich and luxe. It’s especially nice in this supple textured leather.

The shape of the bag is sort of a combination of 80s and 90s styles. Hobos were really hot in the 80s, and in the 90s bags got really oversized and slouchy like the Robyn. The metallic corner trims, however, are totally contemporary and the overall effect is hip, but classy. Plus, the Robyn doesn’t have a lot of extra bells and whistles, so all the little high quality details shine through.

At $985, the Robyn is on the pricier side for a Wang bag, but if you’re committed to the color, the style will definitely take you places.

Dog bed specialists Lilly & Abbie are expanding their range to include customized bags for pet parents.

The Boston based accessory firm is creating customized bags made from the same colorful material used for the dog beds. With more than 100 patterns to choose from, the chances of you finding someone else with the same bag is pretty slim.

Adding to the individuality, the Lilly & Abbie bags are also available in three different styles: a small and large tote, and a cute doggie carry bag. Then choose your favorite lining from seven different fabrics, plus the piping, and Lilly & Abbie will make it for you.

Lilly & Abbie may has made its name as a pet accessory company, but you wouldn’t really know it by looking at the bags. Aside from the zebra striped Tunisia fabrics, the patterns have little to do with animals at all! Spots, stripes, paisley, and art deco designs are much more timeless than any paw prints or cutesy animal patterns. There’s a little paw print on the logo, but it’s very subtle.

The new Lilly & Abbie bags are available from the company’s website from $95. That’s reasonable for any fabric tote, but even more impressive when we consider each one is handmade to order.

Reed Krakoff takes a few fashion risks with this striking Kick Boxer shoulder bag.

The greatest problem with risks, is that they don’t always bear fruit. The Kick Boxer takes its cues from Reed Krakoff’s previous best selling Boxer bags, but I’m honestly not sure how I feel about it. I can’t fault the craftsmanship or the materials. The smooth black leather body is a lovely counterpoint for the pale gray snakeskin flap.

But that white statement belt is a bit confusing to me. I suppose it’s a matter of personal taste, but I think it muddies the design. It also obscures the flap, so I imagine it’d make it difficult to access your precious cargo.

It’s rare that I claim a designer’s given us too many carrying options, but I think Reed Krakoff may have gone overboard here. There’s a small handle on the top, and another one on the side, so we can carry the Kick Boxer with any orientation we like. Both handles are too short to be very useful, so I’m much fonder of the attachable cross-body strap. It’s the only one that’s really practical in my mind, so I wonder why Reed Krakoff has cluttered the design with the rest.

High fashion lovers might not mind spending $1990 on this bag. I can concede that its luxury materials probably warrant that price tag. But it’s far too much to spend on a purse that’s so impractical.

It’s a bit hard to think about woolen handbags when we’re sweltering under the summer heat, but WoolYouBeMine is doing its best to woo us. The fledgling company makes cute handbags entirely from 100% boiled wool.

WoolYouBeMine creator Kristen Bachaumard launched her business to create an alternative to those obnoxious logo plastered designer accessories. The woolen bodies of her 17-inch square bucket style purses are finished off with steel grommets, adjustable leather straps, and striking graphic icons. The bags look simple enough on the outside, but the colorfully lined interiors are very smartly designed. They offer a zippered privacy compartment and space for your wallet, keys, and cell phone.

It seems that for Bachaumard, carrying her own handbags may be one of the best forms of advertising. She said she’s often approached by fashion fans keen to learn more about the unique purse she’s carrying.

“Visually, the gorgeous colors and graphics draw their attention first, but when they touch it, when they feel the softness of the wool, the comfort of the strap and see the surprise of the colorful lining—they are hooked,” she said.

With prices starting at $345 though, they’re much more expensive than I’d expect a woolen purse from a small fashion house to be. That price does buy us a bit of choice, with 11 colors and five different graphics available, but if you want to customize the design prepare to pay a bit more.

Rebecca Minkoff serves up one of the nicest addictions I’ve ever heard of with this glazed leather satchel.

This is one of those rare handbags that look modern without relying on the trends for inspiration. Tasseled zipper pulls and geometric stitching work well with the classic satchel shape. They give the Addiction a contemporary edge, but not one that’s going to date.

The combination of the warm pale gray color and gently glazed leather is also really appealing. The polished finish looks a little posh, but it’s not as glossy as a patent would be. This treatment makes the Addiction very versatile, the kind of satchel that you can easily dress up or down with the right outfit.

The Addiction’s every day, every occasion appeal is only enhanced by its functional design. The rolled handles are long and easy to carry, although we’re also given a much longer one for cross-body wear. All those external pockets are great for stashing the items you want at your fingertips, and there’s more than enough space for the rest inside.

At $650 the Addiction is one of Rebecca Minkoff’s most expensive designs, but most of us will carry it around enough to justify its cost.

Rampage gives a cool Middle Eastern feel to the traditional flap purse with this Abbey shoulder bag.

The Abbey has a very basic base, but the details help to elevate it above the pack. The gathered seams are a modern take on Chanel’s famous diamond quilting. The straps, with their thin leatherette threaded through silver chain, also recall that famous French fashion house. A silver metal tassel adds another appealing layer to the design, and something that’s completely original!

I love all the textures at the front of the Abbey, so I was a bit disappointed to turn it over and see just a zippered pocket. Yes it’s practical, but it’s also a bit pedestrian. It’s also not entirely unexpected. For $78 we expected Rampage to cut costs somewhere, and the rear details and materials are smart areas to do it.

We also do without those lovely touches we see on more expensive purses. The lining is a fun pink color, but it feels pretty cheap. The pockets are functional, but as they’re not reinforced they too might not last.

The Abbey’s not the perfect purse, but for the money it comes pretty close. For $78 you’ll be hard pressed finding a shoulder bag with so much personality and panache.

Alexander Wang will launch his highly anticipated new small leather accessories range exclusively on eBay’s Fashion Vault.

There are just four styles in the new collection, although such a limited release is nothing new for Wang. He prefers to focus on just a few designs and do them really well rather than spreading himself too thinly.

The most expensive item of the bunch is a ponyskin Zelmira wallet, which will set you back $525. If that’s a bit too rich for your blood you might prefer the ostrich printed Prisma biker purse and Mini Adriel. As they’re made with ostrich printed leather rather than the authentic skin they’re priced a bit more affordably at $295 and $275 respectively. Rounding out the set is the Compact Quillon, the metallic purse pictured which costs just $235.

The Alexander Wang goodies will fill the Fashion Vault on June 17 from 3 am Pacific Time. They’ll be on sale for just 24 hours, or until stocks last. If you miss out then you’ll have to wait until the small leather accessories arrive in stores this July.

I’ve only recently discovered the massive savings available on eBay’s Fashion Vault, but I’ve never seen them get the jump on the competition like this. Hopefully it’s a sign of more big eBay launches to come.

Ralph Lauren shows us that drawstrings can work for buttoned up bags too with the Chatsworth tote.

In most ways this is a very traditional tote, from the top of its rolled handles to the bottom of its reinforced corners. That classic base makes the Chatsworth a great go-anywhere bag, the kind of accessory that would look smart in the office and right at home at dinner afterwards. The drawstring brings things back into the 21st century though. I wouldn’t expect to see such a relaxed clasp on such a sophisticated bag, but as it’s a little hidden I think it works well.

I just wonder whether the drawstring makes a big enough impression to justify its inconvenience. These kinds of clasps are notoriously awkward to handle, especially when your cell phone is ringing inside! They’re also not as secure as a zipper, so I’d store anything of value in the interior zip pocket.

At $179 the Chatsworth is affordable for its quality, but I’m starting to wonder whether it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

Angelina Jolie is the latest celebrity to step in front of the lens for Louis Vuitton’s inspiring Core Values campaign.

The advertising campaign’s regular photographer Annie Leibowitz shot the actress and humanitarian sitting in a traditional wooden boat in her beloved Cambodia. The country has become very near and dear to Angie’s heart since she first visited to film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2000. She adopted her first child, Maddox, from a Cambodian orphanage in 2002, and has made many humanitarian visits to the country to raise awareness of the perils of landmines.

This very natural image of Jolie boating in the province of Siem Reap is so striking that I almost overlooked her Louis Vuitton bag! That’s probably not the best thing for advertising campaign, but I love the subtlety of the composition. The Monogram Alto Holdall is one of Angie’s own accessories, which may be why it looks right at home slung over her shoulder.

The glossy world of fashion seems a million miles away from Angelina Jolie’s compassionate work, but her fans needn’t think she’s selling out. She donated her modeling fee, rumored to be around $10 million, to charity. It just proves again that she’s just as beautiful inside as she is on the exterior. That’s much like a good Louis Vuitton handbag, don’t you think?
