Novelty purses like this are common place amongst the Timmy Woods collection, yet strangely I’m always taken aback by the flamboyance of the designs. Here the red color makes a real statement, as do the unusual starbursts on the nail polish lid.

It looks like child play, but this purse is actually very well made. Like so many of Timmy Woods’ purses, it’s crafted from acacia wood. Some girls might worry about the environmental implications of such a design decision, but the practice is actually very sustainable. Woods only uses the wood from fallen trees, and for every one she takes she plants two more.

This nail polish bag is more about show than substance though. It’s more like carrying around a work of art than a handbag. That unusual shape isn’t made to hold much, so you’ll need to pack carefully if you hope to have even your essentials with you. The cross-body strap is almost a half-hearted attempt at convincing us that this purse is practical, but I’m not falling for it.

But perhaps it doesn’t need to be functional. At $285, this quirky purse might just start enough conversations to sway you!

Henri Bendel is inviting aspiring accessories designers to get creative  online for its latest Open See designer casting call.

The Open See concept has been around for more than 40 years. During that time it’s been responsible for kick starting the careers of prominent fashion designers like Anna Sui, James Purcell, Collette Malouf, and Todd Oldham.

But the online entry process is something new, a sign that Henri Bendel is keeping up with the times. It also opens up the competition to designers based outside New York. We all know there’s plenty of talent all over the country, so why not discover it? Looking at the quality of some of the current entries, the judges are going to have a tough task ahead!

The competition encourages you to submit a sketch of a handbag, scarf, hat, hair accessory, or piece of jewelry. Henri Bendel buyers will look over the designs, and if they like what they see your piece could end up made using Swarovski crystals and stocked by Henri Bendel.

You’d better get your thinking cap on though, as the Online Open See closes on July 21. Entry is open to residents of the United States aged 18 or older. You can only submit one design, so make sure it’s a good one!

Tignanello reminds us of the power of pebbled leather with this Power Pebble Shopper Tote.

I really like the shape of this tote, which is more rounded and voluminous than the traditional boxy design. This silhouette is perfect for emphasizing the quality of that pebbled leather. I’m not so sure about the contrast stitching, which I honestly think cheapens the shopper’s appearance. However I’m sure some girls will enjoy the way it emphasizes the Power Pebble’s structure.

The Power Pebble doesn’t have a very fashion forward look, but I think its practical design makes up for that. There are open pockets on each side, and a zippered pocket on the back, so we’ve got plenty of places for stashing the items we want on hand. A zippered compartment divides the interior into smaller, easy to use sections. It makes an already manageable space even simpler to work with, especially with its array of smaller wall pockets to help out. The long, flat handles are another practical perk.

With its fairly traditional look, I do wish Tignanello had played with color more. There are just three shades available: black, white, and a pale yellow. None of them will set the fashion world ablaze, but they will be versatile. And for an affordable $159, perhaps we should just be grateful for that.

Fossil channel a boho hippie vibe with their pun-tastic Key-Per tote.

If you are into pattern clashing and ethnic inspiration, then this canvas and leather tote will be just the thing. It combines an eye-catching fabric lining with a coated canvas body in a completely different print, and added on top is a different colored leather base. Were it not deliberate it could look over-the-top (and the more conservative amongst us probably won’t be fans), but the end result is actually one that, thanks to the cohesive color schemes, works quite well.

The convertible aspect, of course, is going to appeal to those that also appreciate the practicality of that coated canvas exterior. The option to fold the bag down and use short handles, or to unfold it and use the long cross-body strap make it perfect for people who need multi-function capabilities. I just wish the handles worked a little better with the overall design.

With its cheery ethnic pattern and high usability, this Fossil purse is ideal for those on the move, even if it isn’t really everyone’s cup of tea.

Tianni serves up zips, zips, and more zips with the Elle Tote.

Vertical zippers decorate the front of this rectangular synthetic handbag. At first I thought they might have hidden a practical secret; some hidden pockets or expandable sections perhaps. But no, they’re merely an aesthetic detail designed to liven up the blue synthetic body. They do that, and do it well, but I can’t help feeling a twinge of disappointment that they’re just surface.

The Elle’s interior meets our expectations without exceeding them. It’s very generous, but the pockets do a decent job at helping us stay organized. They’re the stock standard really, a couple of open pouches and a zippered pocket too.

But for the money, perhaps we should be happy that Tianni’s not really skimping. The use of synthetic is a bit of a compromise of course, but it’s one we’ve grown to expect at this price point. At least it does a reasonable job of mimicking the real thing.

At $80, the Elle is an affordable everyday handbag. It might not inspire a lot of handbag envy, but it’ll certainly serve you well.

Prada has answered the prayers of animal lovers with the release of a range of faux fur handbags for fall.

There are three bags in all: the pint sized Eco Pellicia Faux Fur Wristlet and the large Prada Mohair Faux Fur Garden Tote and Prada Mongolia Faux Fur Garden Tote. Each costs a fraction of the price of authentic fur bags; the wristlet is available for $370 while the totes will set you back $995.

The use of faux fur makes a lot of sense to me. Embossed exotic skins and stamped ostrich hides have become common place on the fashion landscape, so why not replicate fur too? These aren’t the best faux furs I’ve seen, but they’re also not the worst. The Mongolia Fur Garden Tote looks a little stringy and fibrous, but I can imagine spending a lot of time petting that wristlet. It seems every bit as soft as a good fur bag should be.

The biggest disappointment for me is the use of real leather for the handles. I suppose Prada’s faithful might revolt if the luxury line started to use synthetic, but it’s not going to please PETA any. It seems hypocritical to condemn the use of real fur but continue to slaughter cows, doesn’t it? A life is a life after all.

So perhaps this isn’t the collection that animal lovers were hoping for, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.

Faux Fur Bags on eBay

The SAK embraces its feminine side with this Floral satchel.

It looks like woven wool from a distance, but the Flora is actually made from a high-tech fiber called polypropylene. It’s a strong material often used to create carpets and ropes. It doesn’t look quite so tough here though in bright raspberry pink!

While the color might disappoint the science nerds out there, it’s a fun foil to the white beading around the handles and the pretty floral accents. Those flowers look a bit like those cheap material blooms you see on the tables of tacky restaurants, but this playful style isn’t about realism. If they aren’t your cup of tea though, it’s nice to note that they’re easily removable.

The Flora’s interior is generously sized and well appointed with a pair of gadget pouches and a large zippered pocket in the back wall. The woven nylon lining seems tough, but without any trim around those pockets I worry about them suffering from wear and tear.

Perhaps I shouldn’t be looking for those little details in a $79 purse though. The SAK has already given us personality and practicality after all!

Tyvek Bags on eBay

The Jesse B. Collection takes a break from its traditional frame clutches to create this casual Morgan carpet bag.

Its dimensions may be a bit of a departure for The Jesse B. Collection but all the hallmarks of the brand are there. Its wool material would be familiar for fans. Its houndstooth print is also classic, although its mix of red and black checks makes it feel a bit more contemporary. I like the way this print is complemented by the black corduroy, which also forms the long shoulder straps.

In many ways this is a very traditional casual bag, but the pleats in the front and back give it a little more style. I still wouldn’t swan down the red carpet with it, but if paired with the right outfit you might find it’s more versatile than you’d think.

The interior is the real let down for me. It’s fully lined, but there’s no closure and no compartments either. A bag so large really needs some pockets to be practical. All that space is nice, but without anything to help us stay organized it’s not very user friendly.

I don’t expect the world for $95, but I do expect the basics. The Morgan is cute and classic, but I’m not sure I’d pay that price for a bag with only surface appeal.
