Paris Hilton caused a fan and media frenzy this weekend when she touched down in India to promote her handbag line.

Hilton met her loyal fans and signed autographs at Inorbit Mall in Mumbai today. The handbags will be available exclusively through India’s Shoppers Stop stores, before being rolled out to other Indian boutiques. India is the 36th country to stock Hilton’s handbags, but it’s an important market for the socialite. India has never sold a celebrity lifestyle brand, so Hilton is really breaking new ground in the country.

Brand Concepts, which has the exclusive rights to Hilton’s accessories line, has a long term vision for its growth in India. It plans to open eight exclusive Paris Hilton stores in India by the end of the financial year. In the next three years, that number is expected to grow to between 40 and 50 standalone accessories outlets.

These stores will sell the popular handbags alongside Hilton’s eye-wear, watches, fragrances, pet products, music, and more. With the Paris Hilton bags priced between 2500 and 12, 000 rupees, Brand Concepts expects the company to make profits of 80 crore (or 80, 00, 00, 000 rupees) in the first four years in India.

Say what you want about Paris Hilton, but there’s no denying she’s showing a lot of business sense of late!

Marc Jacobs is one of those rare designers that always surprises. Sometimes he’s creating colorful, whimsical accessories, and on other occasions we see him taking a more traditional route. However with Marc Jacobs, traditional is never a euphemism for tired. This House of Marc satchel is the embodiment of modern elegance.

Just like the little black dress, the mid-sized black bag is a wardrobe essential. This House of Marc satchel fits the bill, with its clean lines and gently grained black leather. The golden hardware makes the satchel feel richer, and gives it some individuality. I really like the hexagonal studs on the straps, and the turn-lock closures on the side pockets. I probably could have done without the nameplate, as it really interrupts the design, but it’s small enough that I can forgive it.

The House of Marc satchel isn’t enormous, but it should be adequate for holding all the things we really need. Personally I find carrying a bag on the smaller side to be a plus, as I’m not tempted to fill it with items that will only weigh me down. And with less space taken up with clutter, it’s easier to lay your hand on the things you need.

This satchel’s already enticing, but the price is the clincher. At $498, this Marc Jacobs bag is very affordable considering the years of faithful service it promises.

Gucci’s glamorous, refined aesthetic has set the standard in fashion for decades. This vintage-inspired 1973 bag combines the best of its past and very contemporary elegance.

The combination of materials on the 1973 is total genius. I love the rich tone on the black suede. It’s very chocolatey, which suits the smooth texture beautifully. The orange trim is perfect. It hearkens back to the 70s in a subtle way. The color says retro, but the quality of the craftsmanship is totally modern.

The design of the bag is also really spot-on. The simple shape gives way to a tooled flap that is curvy and sleek. I’m not really sure that I love the way the clasp hangs on the bag, though. The way the lines of the flap intersect with the lines of the logo sort of crowds the front of the bag. But I really do like the logo strap attachments. They add a little je ne sais quoi.

The $2,330 price tag of the 1973 is certainly not unheard of in the designer arena, but I’m not sure that the not quite streamlined look of the bag warrants it.

Maison Martin Margiela’s certainly turned my head with this unusual metallic clutch. However I’m not sure that grabbing attention is always the best thing.

This purse is very quirky, with its oversized flap and folded sides. And just to make sure we don’t ignore it, its surface is padded and made in scene stealing gold metallic. I’ve got to tell you Maison Martin Margiela, we were already looking. On one hand I admire a designer that does something different, but I also wonder whether this is a case of quirk for quirk’s sake.

The leather lined interior is luxuriously spacious, and the padding ensures the clutch feels heavenly to touch. But even with that padding to please us, I can’t imagine carrying such a large and unusually shaped purse will be easy. And if you take advantage of all that space, you can expect the task to be even more awkward.

When you create a purse that’s such a standout, you can charge what you like for it. If people love it, they’ll have to pay the price because they won’t find anything similar for less. But I can’t imagine spending $855 on this enormous and awkward clutch, no matter how unusual it is, can you?

Plenty of young celebrities love Hermes bags, from Kim Kardashian to Victoria Beckham. But the iconic handbag house also has some older fans, including acclaimed British author Barbara Taylor Bradford.

The 78-year-old writer has accumulated many Hermes handbags in her lifetime thanks to her generous husband of 47 years, television producer Robert Bradford. Mr. Bradford has bought many of the prized purses to mark milestones in his marriage, including birthdays, Christmases, anniversaries, and the releases of his wife’s novels.

“Together, they tell the story of our marriage,” Mrs. Taylor Bradford explained.

She keeps her collection in the walk-in dressing room of her New York home. Recently she took them out for cleaning and was overcome by their significance.

“I still love Bob as much as I did on our wedding day and I feel so incredibly lucky to have the bags as each one is a symbol of our love, and the five decades we’ve spent together,” she recently told The Daily Mail.

Barbara Taylor Bradford’s favorites include her first Hermes bag, a black Kelly she received in 1964, the brown and burgundy versions she received over the next few years, a cream crocodile purse from 1969, and The Evelyne she acquired only a couple of years ago.

Once upon a time we could count on Magid for summery day bags made from woven straw and other natural fibers. But the times they are a-changing, and these days the label’s been revealing a more glamorous side. This Pattern Sequin Convertible Clutch is a great example of the fashion house’s new direction.

This purse is unashamedly girly with its sugary pink color and gentle rose print. The clean box shape ensures it doesn’t feel too fluffy though, which is a great plus for modern misses. But what really makes the clutch special for me are those clear sequins, which subtly catch the light for just a hint of extra sparkle.

You sort of know what you’re getting just by looking at this clutch. It’s slender, so we must pack it carefully if we hope to carry even our essentials. There’s space for the attachable silver chain in there though, and a large gusseted pocket which is much smarter than the tiny slips we typically receive.

And happily the price is right. At $58 this Magid clutch is an affordable way to complete your evening ensemble.

Maddalena Marconi may not be a household name, but its evening purses never fail to make an impression. We haven’t always embraced the label’s luxurious accessories, but this Beaded Evening Clutch is certainly one I can get behind.

This evening clutch gets away with its extravagance by using classic color combinations and traditional accents. However it’s the way the Italian fashion house has put them together that makes all the difference. Tiny black jais beads dangle from the complementary scalloped lace overlay. Swarovski crystals bring some more glamour to the structured frame.

The striking exterior is matched by an interior which is just as luxurious. We’re treated to silvery calf leather for the lining and a small pocket for stashing a credit card and receipts. There’s also a silver chain tucked away inside so you needn’t spend all night clutching it. Personally though, I’m not sure I’d want to let it out of my hands!

Few of us will have the social calendar to justify spending $1397 on this purse, or any evening purse for that matter. But if you want to treat yourself, this clutch is a great way to do it!

If you’re a fur lover in West Hollywood, you may want to start stocking up on your favorite fuzzy handbags and apparel now. The local council has unanimously voted to ban the sale of any clothes or accessories made “in whole or part from the pelt or skin or an animal with hair, wool, or fur” within the city limits.

The decision is the city’s latest measure to protect its animal friends. West Hollywood has also outlawed the declawing of cats, and you can’t even buy dogs and cats within the region. The locals with animals are known as “pet guardians” rather than “owners.” Given its deep affection for all creatures great and small, it makes sense that West Hollywood is on its way to becoming the first in America to take such a stand against animal cruelty.

Its proposed that the ban will come into effect on June 30 next year, but the ordinance must receive a second reading before that time. It’s also unclear whether the ban will apply to the sale of used fur fashion, so that too must be discussed.

Councilman John D’Amico, who included a proposal for the ban as part of his election platform, said he was overjoyed by the decision.

“This was very exciting, and it was unanimous by this brave and thoughtful city council,” he said.

However fashion store owners aren’t quite as enthusiastic. They claim the ban is unconstitutional and that it infringes on their freedom.

Mad Imports, or May Y Sol as its also known, typically creates summery accessories from raffia. The Eloise has all those hallmarks, yet its styling makes it appropriate for use all year round.

The tightly woven raffia takes on the appearance of heavy cloth here. From a distance it seems like tweed or a knitted fabric. That helps its perennial appeal, especially in this fresh green hue.

The simplicity of the design also helps its cause. It seems strange to call a clutch with a large bow accent simple, but this classic approach makes a real change from the flowers and nubbly nodules we’ve seen on many of its accessories. That simplicity is also a downside on a practical level though. There’s no shoulder strap hidden away, and the open pocket inside seems like more of a token gesture than a real organizational aid.

The Eloise’s $79 price tag is a bit steep for a raffia clutch, but it’s also not unreasonable for a purse you’ll get plenty of use of night or day, all year round.
