Apple’s New Matt & Nat Collaboration | Tech Company’s Latest Line of Laptop Bags

Posted on: Jan 17

Matt & Nat Ritual Shoulder BagApple clearly enjoyed collaborating with Matt & Nat last year as it’s doing it again in 2012. The tech company’s second collection of Matt & Nat bags has all the green credentials and style we could hope for.

The Ritual shoulder bag pictured is a great choice for modern girls. The double zippered trim along the envelope style flap works with the biker cool black vegan leather to create a look that’s bold and contemporary. It’s lined with a suede-like fabric which is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and is available for $180.

The recycled bottles come out again with the monochromatic Phoenix messenger bag. This black and white beauty is made entirely from the old PET containers. Its all around zips make it easy to access your MacBook, iPad or other Apple gadgets. It’s a bit more expensive than the Ritual at $265.

Both options have plenty of organizational pockets for your peripherals and other important items, and all of the eco-assurances that come with Matt & Nat products. They sit amongst other new designs including the Creed Bag, the tall Motto Messenger, and the Fujiya Messenger.

You’ll find the new breed of Matt & Nat for Apple laptop bags at Matt & Nat’s online boutique and the Apple UK webstore. Have these new designs hit the right note for you?

Mad by Design Sunflower Cross-Body Bag | Orange Taffeta Silk Flower Purse

Posted on: Jan 17

Mad by Design Sunflower BagMad by Design embraces its silly side with this Sunflower Cross-Body Bag.

One look at this purse and you know it’s never going to become your go-to accessory. Its distinctive flower shape won’t suit high brow events or business meetings, and it’ll be too small to use all the time anyway. But for a casual day out or anytime your mood needs lifting, it’s perfect.

Its small stature can’t be overstated though. It’s petite, and its round shape and slender dimensions makes it feel even tinier. While it’ll barely hold the essentials, at least it won’t weigh you down. And with a fabric strap, rather than the typical chain we see on small cross-body bags, it’ll also feel comfortable to carry.

This version is the truest representation of an actual sunflower, with its orange taffeta silk leaves and black pollen center. If you prefer a more cohesive look there’s an all black version, or there are fuchsia and red ones for girls who like color. This one’s my favorite, but I appreciate the choices. And at an affordable $35, maybe we don’t have to stop at just one!

MCM’s Sweet Visetos Collection | New Valentine’s Day Bags

MCM Sweet Visetos Bag

It might feel too soon after Christmas and the New Year to contemplate another holiday, but love is in the air. German fashion house MCM has unveiled its Sweet Visetos Collection to mark Valentine’s Day.

The playful collection represents new love with a playful heart-shaped cherry motif. The pretty pink colors and cheeky fruit graphic give the Sweet Visetos accessories a fun kitschy feel. That irreverence is a bit unusual for the MCM label, but if you can’t have fun on Valentine’s Day, when can you?

The new collection features a large Boston bag, a number of zip-around wallets, a handful of key chains, and the tambourine-shaped purse pictured. I’m not sure I’d appreciate the cutesy print on something as big as the Boston, but I can definitely see myself indulging in a wallet or the round cross-body.

Look for the limited edition Sweet Visetos bags in MCM flagship stores around the world in early February. No prices have been announced at this point, but MCM bags are rarely exorbitant so I wouldn’t expect these ones to break the bank, even though they are limited editions. And besides, is any price really too high for the special person in your life?

M. Andonia Suede Carryall Tote | Fun Medium Red Colorblocked Handbag

Posted on: Jan 17

M. Andonia Suede Carryall ToteM. Andonia puts the planet first with this playful Suede Carryall Tote.

As it’s made from real suede it’s not animal friendly, but I’m impressed with the measures M. Andonia’s taken to keep the cost to the planet down. It’s crafted from domestically sourced suede, rather than that swanky European stuff, to minimize the label’s carbon footprint. That poppy red color also comes from natural vegetable dyes rather than harmful chemicals. So while it won’t please PETA, this suede carryall is a more eco-friendly choice than many other totes on the market.

M. Andonia doesn’t exceed our expectations, but it’s done enough to make this tote practical. It’s roomy but not too big, so the removable drop pocket is really all we need. Its handles are also long and flat so they’ll stay put on our shoulder when we step out.

These suede carryalls aren’t all created equally though. While I love the combination of scarlet red and burnished trim, the other variations don’t rev me as much. The contrast on the navy, pink, and green versions is too great, yet they don’t look as chic as the best colorblocked bags do. Choose carefully and you’ll see value for your $380.

Lux de Ville Getaway Satchel | Metallic Green Sparkle Kiss Lock Handbag

Posted on: Jan 16

Lux De Ville Getaway SatchelIf it ain’t broke, why fix it? That’s the clearly the design ethos of Lux de Ville, who serves up another retro accessory with this Getaway Satchel.

The Getaway takes us back to the 50s with its clean lines and structured shape. The sparkly sea foam green vinyl might not be authentically retro, but the playful finish is awfully cute. It’s also just one of six color options. For the most part Lux de Ville allows the material to speak for itself, although the kiss-lock clasp and chevron accent give it a bit more flair.

The Getaway is a bit larger than authentic 50s accessories, but that makes it more practical for modern misses. Its midsized dimensions are perfect for holding everything we need without encouraging clutter.

The strap is a little too skinny to be truly practical though. While the Getaway isn’t a large satchel, it’s likely to pull on your shoulder once it’s loaded up. I also don’t trust the strength of that vinyl, as the man-made material is rarely as strong as leather.

I can’t guarantee that it’ll last a long time, but at $72 perhaps it doesn’t have to. The Getaway is an affordable satchel with a whole lot of personality.

Furla’s New Travel Accessories Store | Handbag Label’s Luggage Focus

Furla Store

We’ll see several new Furla travel accessories stores opening around the world this year.

The first travel accessories outlets will open within Furla’s existing stores in Beijing and Harbin this February. The Chinese boutiques will dedicate 15-meters square of space within their leather outlets to the label’s new spring/summer collection. Also in China, Furla’s store at Beijing International Airport is currently being refurbished to include the travel goods. Furla’s head of travel retail Gerry Munday says that China holds “huge potential” for his company.

But China isn’t the only area to receive Furla’s new travel goods. February will also see small eight-meter square space will open within the label’s Cairo International Airport.

The fashion house is also looking to introduce its travel goods to the Americas. In March it will gain necessary exposure with its first exhibit at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas. Munday hopes the appearance will generate buzz for new store-in-store spaces at Furla’s Las Vegas Airport and San Domingo outlets.

Munday says he’s “very confident” that Furla’s travel accessories will find a keen market in the Americas. The success of this new line should help cement Furla as a serious accessories brand. Do you think the move into travel goods is a smart move for Furla?

Lulu Guinness Emily Small Cross-Body Bag | Black Cherry Quilted Lips Patent Leather Purse

Posted on: Jan 16

Lulu Guinness Emily BagLulu Guinness offers up her iconic lip print with more subtlety than usual with this cute Emily purse.

You have to look closely to see the lips at all, but that’s part of this cross-body bag’s appeal. Rather than jarring blood red pouts Guinness has opted for elegant quilting. The lip shaped stitching is much more interesting than the tired old diamonds we typically see. You didn’t expect Lulu Guinness to go completely straight, did you?

The Emily’s simple shape is matched with a simple interior. That’s not a bad thing, because such a small purse doesn’t need overcomplicating. And so we see a single zippered pocket, which is just enough to separate small valuables from the rest of your cargo.

I love the Emily’s color, a deep red so rich that it’s almost black. I’m sure many would mistake it for the monochromatic hue from a distance, but that’s actually a blessing. It helps us wear the Emily with anything so we really see value for our dollar. After all, at £225.00 it’s not cheap for a bag so small!

More Features of This Lulu Guinness Quilted Lips Cross-Body Bag

  • Zip fastening
  • Striped cotton lining
  • A single strap with a 23.25 inch drop
  • Measures 8.25 x 6.3 x 1.75 inches

Galliano Does Hunter S. Thompson | Christian Dior’s Diffusion Line’s Fear & Loathing Advertisement

Posted on: Jan 16

Galliano Spring 2012 Advertisement

John Galliano exited Christian Dior in a booze-fueled haze of controversy, so it’s interesting to see the its diffusion line’s latest advertising taking inspiration from another drunk renegade. The spring 2012 campaign for Galliano pays tribute to acclaimed yet controversial gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

Benhamin Eidem is modeled after Raoul Duke, the autobiographical title character of Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Just as Johnny Depp did in the film adaptation, Eidem smolders from underneath his bucket hat and yellow lensed aviator sunglasses. Despite meeting some notable women, Duke never had a sidekick. Perhaps if he did she’d look something like Constance Jablonski, who cuts a dramatic figure in her Hawaiian print dress, oversized clutch purse, and wedge heels.

Looking at this attractive twosome makes me want to pack my bags for my own Las Vegas road trip. The commercial really captures the warm weather ahead and sells the clothes and accessories really well.

But does anyone else find it a little strange that a line previously headed by a loud-mouthed loose cannon with a drinking problem is now paying homage to a figure so similar? While Hunter S. Thompson wasn’t exactly sympathizing with Nazis he certainly never shied away from controversy.

What do you think of Galliano’s latest advertisement?

Lucky Brand Taluca Lake Cross-Body | Mini Faux Fur Purse

Posted on: Jan 16

Lucky Brand Taluca Lake Cross-Body BagThe fashion world may be looking ahead to spring, but Lucky Brand lets us hold on to winter for a little longer with this Taluca Lake cross-body bag.

The Taluca Lake brings a cold weather feel to Lucky Brand’s bohemian vision. The plush faux fur finish is complemented by soft suede accents. The furry finish looks like it’s come straight from the ski slopes, while the tassels and casually knotted strap take us right back to the 60s. There’s something vaguely off putting about the greenish tinge to the fur, but at least the hue is different to the usual animal-colored offerings. Over-zealous PETA activists will never mistake this finish for the real thing!

The Taluca Lake is very small though, which limits its usage somewhat. During the day we usually want to carry more than it will hold, and it doesn’t really look sophisticated enough for after five wear. It’ll suit school runs and coffee catch-ups, but it’ll never become your go-to bag.

While the quality is right for the Taluca Lake’s $129 price tag I don’t think it’s practical enough to tempt most modern girls.

  • Snap flap opening
  • Chocolate brown fabric lining
  • An interior slip pocket
  • Measures 7 x 7.5 inches

Lindsay Lohan Models in Philipp Plein Advertisement | Troubled Actress Plays All-American Girl

Posted on: Jan 15

Philipp Plein Advertisement

It’s not quite Miu Miu, but Lindsay Lohan has managed to score herself a starring role in Philipp Plein’s spring 2012 advertisement.

Frankly the troubled starlet needs to take whatever work she can get these days. It seems Plein’s supported her through thick and thin. She was sitting in the front row of his Milan Fashion Week show last year, and now she’s popped up in his latest commercials.

Li-Lo’s had a rough trot of late but she emerges from this latest appearance smelling pretty sweetly. While her unusual outfit leaves a bit to be desired, she looks great perched upon a dock in Italy’s Lake Como. And while I can’t give the patent red jacket or those bow-decorated heels a lot of love, the patriotic stars and stripes clutch in her hand is pretty cute.

I think Lohan really needed to start small if she hopes to claw her way back to in demand model and style maker. While this isn’t a large campaign she takes on a prominent role and holds her own. It might just be the kind of thing other designers will look at and take notice of. Do you think we’ll see Lindsay in a few more fashion campaigns next season?
