Bag enthusiasts will love the trip down memory lane offered by Pocketbook Anthropology: A Treasure of Handbags. The exhibition, now showing at the Boulder History Museum in Colorado, features more than 60 purses from 19th century classics to modern-day marvels.

Some of the pieces on show include contemporary handbags made from cigarette wrappers and duct tape, beaded vintage purses, and even a wire bag while looks more like a crab trap!

These priceless purses are displayed alongside clever quips and quotes from notable women in history. My favorite is the American poet Ellen Rachlin, who famously said “A woman in her lifetime will spend far more hours hugging a handbag than a man.” How very true!

With its sense of style and healthy dose of humor, this exhibition is sure to excite accessory-loving ladies. It will be at the Boulder History Museum until November 30, before traveling to Wyoming, Ohio, and New York.

Gucci’s long association with UNICEF continues this year with the release of a special white version of its Tattoo Heart Collection. 25% of the sales of the bags will be donated to the charity. This will assist them in providing aid to orphans and children affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa.

All handbags in the range feature Gucci’s iconic heart and rose design, a colorful print which contrasts with the purses’ stark white backgrounds.

“I love the idea of a heart being tattooed onto the handbags,” explained Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini, who has been involved in Gucci’s annual charity line since 2005. “It’s a permanent mark that you can wear with pride that stays with you. I think that represents very well what we are doing here. This is not a one-off program, but rather an ongoing commitment to the incredible work that UNICEF is able to achieve. It’s really our chance to give back.”

The Gucci UNICEF Tattoo Heart Collection is available from Gucci stores in more than 20 countries from November 19 to January 31.

Since it’s Halloween, I feel obligated to find an ugly designer bag and rip on it because…..well, just because. It would be simple to just find a usual suspect (like Fendi, Versace or Juicy Couture) and pick on it for all the obvious reasons, but I like the challenge of discovering a bag that should have been fabulous and got sidetracked.

The Bottega Veneta Woven Boston Bag is a perfect example of what can happen when a trusted and error-free designer label “jumps the shark”.

The satchel’s elegant shape and overall design is fine, but then we’re hit with a myriad of woven strips clad in every imaginable color. I can’t figure out why this bag was ever made and especially by Bottega Veneta.

What’s even more egregious than the bag itself is the mind-numbing price tag – $5200! Say what? I wish this were a trick, because it’s certainly not a treat. You can pre-order the Woven Boston Bag and receive it some time in March – just in time to use it as a colorful (and expensive) Easter basket.
