Ladies, get out your Easter bonnets because springtime handbags have arrived. Designers are beginning to release their newest brightly-colored collections on unsuspecting women everywhere who are still wearing sweaters and scarves. Nevertheless, as the weeks fly by, the new season is closing in on us, and the bags are here to prove it.

I can’t imagine a purse exemplifying the soon-to-arrive blossoms better than the Dooney & Bourke Cindy Tote in the new ‘Flowers’ pattern. The popular Cindy bag has been available from D&B for a while now and has appeared in many fabrics and patterns including checks, patent leather, croco-embossed leather, linen, and more. The new floral print option, however, has just recently been unveiled to jump start spring shopping.

Admittedly, the ‘Flowers’ line is not for everyone. I personally prefer to keep bold floral patterns limited to a flowy top, but this Cindy tote does make quite a statement. The realistic flowers look as if they were freshly cut and attached to the bag. It brings to mind images of Charlotte from Sex and the City in a floppy straw hat and kitten heels.
 
The style is ultra-feminine and very uptown. It isn’t everyone’s favorite look, for sure, but some have the fashion sense and taste to pull it off. Yet the toned-down earthy shades all work together for a unified, yet daring, look. The purse’s slouchy style seems perfect for those relaxed days lazing by the pool or a picnic with your gal pals.

The two styles balance each other by allowing the detailing of each to shine through. A simple tote like this one is the perfect complement to a wardrobe of avant garde pieces, but would also be at home in a more conservative closet.

The supple Spanish leather is pressed with a graphic star pattern, creating a look that is both classic and modern. The stitch detail on the thick, comfortable handles mimics the geometric appeal of the stars on the tote.

The Star Embossed Tote is the epitome of understated utility. The large 14″ x 16″ x 2.5″ size makes it the perfect take along tote for a light day of shopping, or to use as a bookbag or briefcase. Of course, at $437 retail, this isn’t going to be an affordable everyday choice for everyone, but it is a beautiful, simple piece that will take you through years of use and trends.

The interior contains an open pocket for keeping your little items from falling to the bottom of the tote, but honestly, on a bag of this price, I would like to see a little more organizational ingenuity. A zipper pocket, for example, and multiple patch pockets for keys and cell phone might be in order.

Still, the sleek minimalism of the tote is seductive, and would work with many wardrobes. I might even go so far as to call the tote unisex, but I think it would take the right kind of man to rock the star pattern with confidence.

The shoulder strap is so thin that I know it won’t feel good on your shoulder. This purse plus a strapless dress is a recipe for disaster. Tuck it away and carry this clutch in your hand unless you want tell-tale red marks on your shoulder!

It’s not very politically correct these days, but Chanel head designer Karl Lagerfield has defended his use of fur.

The fashion head honcho justified his lavish animal skins, insisting it’s a case of “us against them.” He added that hunters rely on “killing those beasts who would kill us if they could.”

I’m not sure what sort of threat the rabbits and minks Chanel favors would ever pose to us humans, but I suppose that Mr. Lagerfield is entitled to his opinion.

He added that “In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has hit back at Mr. Lagerfield’s comments, labeling him “a fashion dinosaur who is as out of step as his furs are out of style.

“The vast majority of fur these days comes not from hunters as he suggests, but from Chinese fur farms, where no law protects the millions of animals who are routinely beaten and skinned alive.

“Lagerfeld’s childish refusal to acknowledge the needless suffering behind every piece of fur and listen to public opinion means that he is being overtaken in the style stakes by an increasing number of designers who believe that cruelty has no place in fashion.”

I’d hate to see the house of Chanel get left behind, but it is clear that many people are morally opposed to wearing fur. While Mr. Lagerfield it so committed to his views, I can’t imagine Chanel’s fashion philosophy changing any time soon.
