Burberry’s Nova Check might be iconic, but bags featuring this plaid print are starting to look a bit tired to me. So I’m thrilled to see the British designer trying something new with this Leather and Raffia Clutch.

If this is a sign of what Burberry can do when it thinks outside the square, it’s a shame the label doesn’t do it more often! The rich brown woven leather complements the multicolored raffia so beautifully. I’ve never seen the natural fiber looking this sophisticated. The finish reminds me of the kind of cloth we might see at a Marrakesh bazaar, but under Burberry’s hand it’s been turned into something more high class. It might just be the perfect combination of east meets west.

Clutches are notoriously impractical, but this one offers more than most. It’s a bit larger than most purses of this ilk, so we can carry a few more items than usual. The extra space is well supported by open and zippered internal pockets. The only thing we’re really missing is a shoulder strap. That’s no small oversight either, because with it I’m sure this clutch would see more daytime wear.

You’ll want to get as much use from it as you can, because at $1295 it’s far from cheap. However it’s just so stylish that it’s tempting to ignore reason and just indulge!

Kipling will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a showing at this year’s IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas.

The Belgian accessories brand will showcase its core collection of crinkly nylon bags. This casual range is so significant that Kipling’s area sales manager for The Americas Fadi Hatem calls “the main feature of Kipling’s fashion business.”

The display at the duty free show is the first of several international events to mark Kipling’s big milestone birthday. It will release a new heritage capsule line, called the Classics Collection, which sees six of its most iconic designs revamped with leather trim and fresh modern colors.

Kipling has also teamed up with acclaimed artists for its Play with Bags projects. The commissioned creative talents took the Classics Collections bags and cut, sewed, and molded them into exciting pieces. Photographs of these works will be displayed at an art exhibition later this year.

We’re also likely to see the photos on 25yearskipling.com, a micro website designed by Kipling to mark its 25 year history.

Twenty five years is a real milestone for the Belgian brand, and I’m thrilled to see it’s keeping the party going all year round. Which of Kipling’s birthday initiatives excites you most?

Michael Kors pares back his usual design aesthetic for this minimalist Gladstone Bucket bag from his MICHAEL line.

The Gladstone’s classic bucket shape is accented by a band of woven leather around the base. This accent works with the earthy burnt orange to create a bag that’s a little bit country, but not kitsch. While it takes its cues from the Wild West, it could easily blend into an urban environment.

Michael Kors may have skimped on exterior elements, but he’s shown real attention to detail inside. The Gladstone’s a gadget lover’s dream, with a whopping four open pockets. These slip pouches are complemented by a zippered pocket and a clever key fob. The single handle is certainly long enough for easy carrying, but if you’re having a busy day you may find the cross-body option simpler to manage. The Gladstone’s magnetic snap isn’t the best closure for such a wide bag, but this is Michael Kors only real misstep.

That makes the Gladstone a real bargain at $328. With quality designs like this, Michael Kors is showing real commitment to his diffusion line.

Furla will showcase its fall/winter 2012-2013 collection at its first IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas.

Gerry Munday, Furla’s Head of Travel Retail, said she was excited at the prospect of exhibiting at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas for the first time.

“Despite the challenging economic climate, Furla enjoyed excellent results in 2011 and we are highly optimistic for 2012 both globally and specifically for travel retail,” she explained.

As the show celebrates travel accessories, these will take center stage at the Furla display. These include several brand new lines along with some old Furla favorites including the Piper and Piper Lux ranges, the Globetrotter, and Amazzone.

The Papermoon bags are structured and targeted at fashion-conscious travellers. The Candy range is more playful, with fun rubber finishes and vibrant shades including neon hues, primary hues, and metallics. Furla has high hopes for its Tribe line, which combines low prices with convertible designs. The Beat bags feature dark moody colors and high-fashion designs. The Pop products are as youthful as they sound with vivid colors and modern details. And that’s just the start of Furla’s brand new designs!

It makes sense for Furla to showcase as its travel lines, as its business strategy reflects a renewed commitment to its luggage and carry-on accessories. In accordance with this new focus, Furla will open new outlets at Las Vegas Airport and the Senses Duty Free downtown Galleria in San Domingo, Dominican Republic later this year.

Life never seems to slow down, so your handbag needs to keep pace. With the Maya, Linea Pelle’s created a handbag that knows how to keep up with life in the fast lane.

The Maya doesn’t make a strong style statement, but its high quality leather ensure it’s still a good looking bag. Classic black is easy to wear in any season, no matter what the occasion. The dark leather ensures the golden studs on the handles really pop.

The Maya’s generous dimensions make me pause though. This is one of the largest bags I’ve seen in some time, which is unusual for an accessory called a Speedy. It’s already heavy at close to two pounds, and if you utilize all that space it’ll become even heftier. While the long strap is built to take the weight, the Maya is still likely to slow you down.

Linea Pelle does its best to make the Maya’s sizable dimensions work for us though. This Speedy Bag is well appointed, with an array of interior and exterior pockets. The pair of rolled handles are long enough to sling over a shoulder, but I prefer the cross-body strap. This allows us to distribute the bag’s weight more evenly for comfortable carrying.

If you love roomy bags, the Maya is a great option for $465.

Three bloggers from the Werelse blogger brand were recruited to help the Spanish label design handbags, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories for its latest range. The lucky writers are Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad, Carolina Engman of Fashion Squad, and Andy Torres of Style Scrapbook. The new Mango Touch line aims to be Mango’s premium accessories line, and the latest designer collection looks worthy of that reputation.

The Mango touch range features three distinct lines: a retro inspired Neon collection, a glitzy Silver collection, and an edgy Buckle collection. Can you guess which line the metallic tote pictured comes from?

Despite being touted as Mango’s high end line, the prices on the Mango Touch items aren’t bad. The pictured tote costs ₤64.99, the same price as the matching slippers. And if you’re feeling skint you can pick up a neon yellow iPhone case, a leather cuff, or an octopus printed scarf for just ₤18.99.

It is on the small side for modern business needs. It might hold a small netbook, but a regular laptop would be a stretch. It’s well organized though, with pen pockets, zippered pouches, and various open compartments for holding office supplies. The short handle looks the part but it’s also not very functional. A cross-body strap would have made the daily commute much easier. I guess this is a briefcase for workers who drive their luxury vehicles to the office rather than braving public transport!

Regardless of its practical shortcomings, this level of luxury never comes cheaply, especially when it’s got a prestigious designer name like Loewe attached. With a hefty price tag of ₤1095, this briefcase is one for corporate bigwigs rather than workers at the lowest rung of the corporate ladder.

Anna Sui looks to inject some of her distinctive fashion forward flair into Tumi’s travel cases with her new capsule collection for the luggage brand.

The travel bags feature Anna Sui’s favourite purple and black color scheme in a feminine butterfly-style print. One thing’s for certain; these suitcases will be easy to spot on baggage carousels!

It’s an unusual pairing but Anna Sui says she’s always admired Tumi’s travel bags.

“To combine their construction and quality with my unique design aesthetic I thought would be a great union,” she said. “We are all thrilled with how the pieces turned out.“

With just four pieces the range is small but comprehensive, with a petite shoe bag, an oversized tote, a laptop case, and a wheeled carry-on suitcase. Prices are comparable with Tumi’s high end lines. You can pick up the shoe bag for $95, or splurge on the rolling carry-on case for $595.

The travel bags, which trailed behind models at Anna Sui’s spring 2012, will hit stores on March 15. But if you just can’t wait that long, you can find them now at Tumi’s website.

Tommy Hilfiger gives the classic bowler a chic makeover with this Pebble Leather style.

Its domed shape and structured design are classic bowler elements, but I can’t imagine putting a heavy ball or pair of shoes inside this beauty. Such a refined creature doesn’t deserve that kind of punishment. I also can’t imagine taking a bag made from such white, bright leather to a dirty local alley either, can you?

While it might not function as its name intended, this Pebble Leather Bowler could bring some refinement to any situation. I love the way the grosgrain stripe imbues the bag with a sporting pedigree. The proud TH medallion is also an elegant way to brand it.

This bowler is spacious without being unwieldy, with a zippered pocket on the bag and several others inside. While it’s not enormous, an attachable strap would have made it a bit more manageable. I think we could get by with the rolled handles, especially as they suit the bowler’s stature so perfectly, but I can’t say carrying this bag will be a breeze.

I also wish there were protective feet on the base, as white leather really needs all the help it can get. While the white one may be the pick of them now, the darker black version may prove to be a better investment in your fashion future.

Famously litigious fashion house Louis Vuitton has a new target in its sights. The French designer label sent a cease and desist letter to the University of Pennsylvania Law School after the college created satirical posters for upcoming seminars.

The law school created posters, which feature a Louis Vuitton style signature print with trademark and copyright signs in the place of LV initial and flowers, to promote lectures on fashion law. The design was intended to pay homage to Louis Vuitton’s aggressive stance on trademark enforcement, but instead it earned the fashion house’s ire.

Louis Vuitton claims the production of the posters is “a serious wilful infringement” which “knowingly dilutes the LV Trademarks.” It also claimed the university’s authority might “mislead others into thinking this type of unlawful activity is somehow ‘legal’ or constitutes ‘fair use.‘”

But as you might expect, the university is well versed in the legalities of this issue. It claims that while trademark regulations exist, so do laws protecting the right to parody and satire. That’s particularly true when the satire is educational or created for non-commercial purposes.

It seems University of Pennsylvania Law School has no hard feelings though. They’ve invited Louis Vuitton representatives to attend the lecture and learn more about fashion law!
