Big Buddha hits multiple bag trends with this new stylish Nolita Shoulder Bag. From the overall shape to the details, this purse has a handful of features going for it.

The Nolita is available in quite a few color options, but this rich purple is a great pop of color for the fall. It’s my favorite of the bunch, although the bright blue and olive green should get an honorable mention as well for their vibrant tones.

I’d prefer if the material on this shoulder bag were genuine suede, but Big Buddha’s manmade version is quite acceptable and much more palatable for the wallet since the Nolita only retails for $90. The faux material isn’t overly noticeable, too, since the purse has a very slouchy silhouette with a drawstring top creating tons of gathers around the body.

The other trendy details on this Big Buddha design include the studs scattered throughout the front and on the sides of the handbag. As usual, it’s a shame that the feature isn’t included on the back of the bag, though this certainly wouldn’t be the first brand to leave out that detail. Fun tassels hang from either side of the drawstring top and give the Nolita a nicely finished appearance.

I love the sassy spirit of this Tano French Nanny bag. It’s got that European refinement, but there’s a cheekiness which sets it apart.

Tano’s clever signature style is seen again in the French Nanny. This isn’t a brand which embraces bells or bling. The front and back have a clean design, which allows the sexy Italian crunch leather to take center stage. The leather comes in a diverse color spectrum, which includes garnet, timber green, and this lovely cobalt blue. While there are many shades to choose from, none are too outlandish. They’re the kind of jewel tones which are right on trend this season.

But the sides are where the real action happens, with leather belt details smattered with silver studs. They bring enough attitude to appease rocker chicks, without overwhelming those of us with more conservative tastes.

The long shoulder strap is another inspired touch. Unlike so many bags, this one won’t just suit you for summer. You can comfortably sling it over a thick knitted sweater or puffy winter coat.

The French Nanny is a big old bag, capable of carrying the girly goodies that you need, and a few things you don’t! But you might have trouble finding them. A zippered pocket and lone open pouch isn’t really enough to keep a space this size in order.

It’s not flawless, but for just $199 I think I could learn to live with the French Nanny’s shortcomings.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for European designer label Versace. Not even a month after the brand announced the closure of its Japanese stores comes news that 350 jobs will be cut.

The positions will be cut from Versace’s international talent pool by the middle of next year. Just like the closure of the Japanese stores, the measure is part of the cost-cutting initiatives essential for the brand to stay afloat during the financial crisis.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Versace is expected to lose €30 million before tax on a revenue of €273 million. Compare this to the brand’s €9 million profit on sales of €336 million just 12 months before.

The good news for fashion fans is that Versace remains committed to new runway designs. It will trim the fat in the areas of production, distribution, and logistics. Whatever steps the label takes, I hope they’re enough to help it weather the financial storm.

The name Phoenix conjures an image of a purse rising from the ashes as the savior of the fashion industry. This tote doesn’t really live up to that grandiose mental picture, but it is a classy creation nonetheless.

It all starts with elegant black, buttery soft leather. The slightly flared shape adds interest, as does the lovely pleated pocket we also saw on the Phoenix hobo. It’s this collection’s trademark, one that combines good looks and practicality. The tiny Stone Mountain nameplates on the pocket and zipper pulls are the only bits of external branding, a welcome break from the loud logos of so many other designer purses.

The styling may be a little pedestrian for some tastes, but Stone Mountain’s always been more about practicality and timelessness than cutting edge looks. The giraffe print lining hints at the brand’s wild side, but the plethora of pockets you’ll also remind us that a functional space is much more important than one which simply looks good.

At $110 retail, the Stone Mountain Phoenix tote represents excellent value. You’re not likely to find many totes with such classic looks and high quality fabrics in this price range.

Baggu’s line of reusable shopping totes are environmentally-friendly, durable, and as stylish as a replacement for plastic grocery bags can be. Well, now the company that brought you the Baggu Tote has added a new sibling to their collection of totes. Instead of ripstop nylon, however, this one is made from 100% recycled cotton canvas.

The recently debuted Duck Bag is as equally sturdy as the original Baggu Tote but with a different shape and convenient features. The short double handles don’t seem very practical, but the longer adjustable shoulder strap is great for wearing across the body while running errands or toting around books, paperwork, or even a laptop.

This Martini wristlet from Alexis Hudson is quite the opposite of the similarly named Martini Glass zippered bag from SR Squared by Sondra Roberts. Whereas the Sondra Roberts version opts for a literal take on the name, Alexis Hudson’s styling is much more abstract.

The Martini wristlet has a unique sculptural quality to it that gives it a sophisticated feeling. The chocolate brown leather keeps the style from being too formal, though. It isn’t the type of bag you’d carry to the gym, but it’s a great accessory for dressing up a cute girl’s night or date outfit.

The large pleated detail on the front of the wristlet is soft and pretty, but it’s the structured, wing-like wrist holder that’s the real eye-catcher. I’m not sure how awkward it would look to carry the Martini bag as a clutch in your hands as opposed to with the wrist feature, though.

This Alexis Hudson design’s zippered top opens to a twill-lined interior with a slip pocket for small items. The Martini wristlet retails for $295, which seems a little steep for a somewhat limited bag but worth it if uniqueness is your main goal.

If you are looking for a cheap and cheerful Christmas purse, this will do fine. The look is stylish, the cost is low even if the quality isn’t quite up to snuff!

I feel, with the winter months encroaching, that a little dose of brightness may be in order. A drop or two of bright color needs to be injected into our wardrobes, to keep the long nights at bay and our spirits lifted.

This tasseled cowboy clutch is available in a dull and average shade of chocolate, but it is the golden marigold tone that make this stand out from the crowd. Textured with the layers of smooth flat tassels (no chance of getting tangled here!), this is a happy sunny little purse with a healthy does of attitude.

Whilst the cute exterior is wonderful, what with the functional-yet-stylish clasp, the interior isn’t quite to my tastes. The strange leopard print pattern just doesn’t push my buttons, and I wish for Kate Spade’s 1960s influence to shine through a bit more.

Try teaming this cute and modern clutch with a bold pair of contrasting tights, to really make people around you feel bright and chirpy. If tassels aren’t your thing, then this is certainly a version that is more accessible than most!

It might be basic black, but this Steve Madden Animal Instincts satchel will help you get in touch with your wild side.

I’ve been on the fence with haircalf bags before, but by keeping the color conservative I think Steve Madden may have won me over. The surface looks soft and velvety rather than creepy and furry. I wish it was teamed with genuine leather rather than synthetic, but I suppose it keeps the price down. At nearly $230, this satchel is a lot more expensive than most Steve Madden purses already. Genuine leather may have won over bag snobs, but it probably would have alienated Steve Madden’s budget-conscious fans.

While it might not withstand as much punishment, the synthetic doesn’t diminish the Animal Instincts sexy good looks. The gleaming gold hardware provides a rich contrast to the brooding dark fabrics.

The animal appeal continues inside with the flamboyant leopard print lining. The zippered pocket and technology-loving slips help keep this sizable interior space in order.

The biggest flaw for me is the short straps. Sure, they’re exceedingly cute, but they’re just not practical for a bag of this size. I can’t imagine how awkward I’d feel lugging this satchel around once it was loaded up with all my essentials! It’s perfect for making a statement at dinner, but if you’ve got errands to run you’d best leave this baby at home.
