It’s been a while since a Fendi creation turned my head, but it’s caused my heart to skip a couple of beats with its Anna Shoulder Bag.

It’s interesting that it took some colorblocking to impress me, as the effect’s starting to feel overused and tired. But this isn’t just any colorblocked purse. It’s a Fendi, a bag of exceptional pedigree and quality. Its contrasting panels emphasize the Anna’s shape beautifully, and its mustard color helps us step back in time. This could be a vintage handbag rather than a new creation. Perhaps that’s why it feels so fresh, rather than simply another recreation of retro fashion.

It’s the attention to detail that makes all the difference here. The Anna’s calfskin leather is buttery soft, and its brushed gold-toned hardware an elegant complement. Its retro top handle is paired with an attachable shoulder strap for modern carrying convenience. There’s only a single zip pocket inside, but such a compact purse doesn’t need any more than that.

The price tag is high as expected for a Fendi purse, but I’m still tempted to shell out $2,120 for this beauty.

Tory Burch serves up classic style with her Maisey Shopper bag.

Some might call the finish colorblocked, but I think the use of two-toned leather is a bit more reserved than that. Rather than seeming trend conscious, the brown leather simply accents the logo and the shopper’s clean lines. Tory Burch calls the earthy color scheme praline. I’m not sure it’s quite as delicious as that moniker suggests, but it should be a versatile addition to any wardrobe.

I must admit, I expected a little more inside the Maisey. It looked aesthetically pleasing, but it didn’t pack a real punch. I expected some extra functional features to set it apart. It’s not an impractical bag, but it doesn’t really offer much more than your average shopper. Its two open pouches and zippered internal pocket are adequate, but a few more pouches would have made the large interior more manageable.

The tubular shoulder straps are long enough for summer wear, but once you don a winter coat they’ll feel much snugger. A few extra inches would have allowed wear all year round.

Perhaps we shouldn’t quibble about the details at $495. That’s not a lot to spend on a designer handbag which will stand the test of time. It could have been a better bag with a few tweaks, but it’s certainly not a poor accessory.

John Richard may be the luckiest pensioner in the United Kingdom. The 73-year-old Londoner paid just ₤20 for a handbag he discovered was a Philip Treacy original.

The handbag features an Elvis Presley print designed by lauded pop artist Andy Warhol. It’s believed to be one of only ten created. On its release it sold for between ₤200 and ₤400. However due to its rarity, it could be worth ₤350, 000 today.

Richard said he was shocked to find the bag at his local Oxfam store, and decided to investigate its authenticity. He snapped it up and took it to the Philip Treacy store, where staff gave him the happy news.

Richard plans to sell the bag and use the funds to purchase a hair salon for his partner. Two private buyers in China have already offered him ₤350, 000 for it. However auctioneers have encouraged him to hang on to the handbag, as it will only increase in value.

Fee Gilfeather, the head of marketing for Oxfam Trading, said she was “stunned” to hear of the bag’s true value. She’s also “very disappointed” that Oxfam will not benefit from its resale. After all, that ₤350, 000 could feed tens of thousands of malnourished families in Western Africa.

This is a perfectly formed petite purse, with clean lines and an elegant compact design. While the fashion world’s moved away from such obvious branding, we can forgive Tory Burch here. Her distinctive logo is quite abstract, so it becomes an aesthetic element, especially when it’s rendered with tiny perforations.

The logo really stands out on this ivory leather version, which also promises to be very versatile. However if you worry about stains showing you may prefer the mustard or black alternatives.

Whichever color you pick you’ll be surprised by how much the Kipp can hold. It’s on the small side and slender, yet it packs a practical punch. It has eight built in card slots and a zippered compartment for coins, so you can easily leave your wallet behind. The multi-compartment design should also keep clutter at bay. Just make sure you don’t go overboard, or else the Kipp will start to bulge.

The long chain strap allows us to casually sling the Kipp across our body as we’re stepping out the door. Or we can take it off and carry it as a clutch once night falls.

At $365 we’re not getting a lot of bag for our dollar, but we’re paying for quality. Consider the Kipp an investment piece and enjoy its versatility for years to come.

The royal family of Qatar has expanded its stake in the fashion business with the acquisition of leading design house, Valentino. Mayhoola, an investment group controlled by the royals, reportedly spent $858 million on the fashion label.

So what happens next? According to a Mayhoola, not a great deal. The company believes that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t need fixing. Instead it looks to support Valentino’s development without ruffling too many feathers.

“Our vision is to back management for the long term to exploit the full potential of this exciting brand,” the spokesperson said. “We believe Valentino is ideally suited to form the basis for a global luxury goods powerhouse.“

Valentino chief executive officer Stefano Sassi added that he’s hopeful Mayhoola’s backing will help his fashion house “reach its full potential.”

Valentino is the latest label to join Mayhoola’s stable. The Qatar group has investments in LVMH, Harrods, and Tiffany & Co. It also recently secured the license for M Missoni.

While the official line states that it will be business as usual, it’s impossible for such a major change to have no effect. We look forward to seeing how Valentino progresses under the guidance of Mayhoola. Are you excited to see what will come next?

Jessica Simpson might know a thing or two about creating a pop hit, but rap seems a little out of her comfort zone. So it’s little surprise that I can’t imagine Nicki Minaj or Missy Elliott ever carrying her Rap Star tote.

I honestly can’t see any rap inspired details in the Rap Star. I’m sure real rap stars would prefer authentic crocodile accents to the cheap looking embossed details Jessica Simpson’s used. The color palette’s also a bit dull for any rap star. The earthy hues might work in the wardrobes of regular folk, but any musician would want a look that’s a lot more head turning. And where’s the bling?

Even if you forget about the Rap Star name, this tote is pretty disappointing. It’s a lacklustre affair that doesn’t make any sort of definitive style statement. It’s a well-designed bag, with plenty of space, pockets, and easy to carry long handles, but all those perks could have come in a more exciting wrapper.

I wouldn’t call the Rap Star tote an eyesore, but it’s far from Jessica Simpson’s strongest design. The best we can say is that it’s affordable at $108, but so are most of the other more aesthetically pleasing purses in the Jessica Simpson stable.

No formal announcements have been made, but The New York Daily News insists Kate Spade New York is preparing to release a more affordable diffusion line. The label, dubbed Kate Spade Saturday, is poised to compete with Chris Burch’s C. Wonder collection.

Anonymous sources say the pieces will take after the goodies from Madewell, with their clean lines and bold saturated colors. The line is set to feature apparel items, accessories, and home wares which are more casual than the ones in Kate Spade New York’s signature line.

Fashion fans are only just getting wind of the new collection, but it seems it’s been taking shape for some time. The Kate Spade Saturday line’s apparently been in the pipeline for the last six months, which makes us wonder why we haven’t heard about it before!

The New York Daily News’ source suggests we’ll see the Kate Spade Saturday pieces in stores outside the United States and online before they hit American retailers.

Kate Spade New York is staying tight-lipped on the rumors, but the fashion house has filed trademarks for Kate Spade Saturday in the United States and Europe. It’s also nabbed the domain name katespadesaturday.com, so clearly something is afoot. The insider might not have all the details right, but it’s likely this line will happen. Are you excited by it?

Fossil cashes in on the colorblocked trend with the Jules Shopper.

I don’t mind that Fossil’s followed the trend here, but I wish it hadn’t interpreted the look in such a lackluster way. The label hasn’t brought anything new to the table. It’s a perfectly adequate example of the styling. The pearlized sea green and lilac panels work well enough together. But it’s just another colorblocked shopper in an already oversaturated market.

Don’t overlook its practicality though. It’s on the large side, but its array of interior pockets ensures its dimensions don’t become unmanageable. There are patch pockets for gadgets and a pair of sunglasses complemented by a zippered pocket for valuables. The handles are long too, and flat, so they should fit easily over your shoulder and stay there.

The Jules is also very affordable at $158. That’s reasonable for any shopper, but especially inexpensive for one made of real leather. It’s not a trend setter by any means, but it’s a good way for girls on a budget to get the latest look.
