Although I’m used to seeing LeSportsac totes and backpacks in fun, whimsical prints like stripes, polka dots, and even owls, it’s nice to know that you can also get one of its incredibly practical designs in something simple like black patent.

The Leigh Weekender, just one of many weekend totes that the brand offers, is exactly what I’d feel comfortable carrying either as a carry-on for a plane trip or as a main bag for a short trip out of town. It might not be a designer travel tote, but then again who wants to worry about the risk of losing or damaging that? The Leigh would make a great back-up option or an equally stylish main choice for traveling depending on your budget.

It might be shiny patent, but this version of the Leigh is still the same durable nylon for which LeSportsac is so well-known. Sensible details like the strips of canvas on the bottom panel to keep the bottom from getting too scuffed, a long zipper pull that’s easy to grab, and sides that unbuckle and expand a bit for attaching the longer, adjustable strap make this weekender more than just a pretty tote. There’s even a nifty wrap-around snap to keep the double handles together when not in use.

While the Leigh bag might not be incredibly inexpensive, it’s definitely in the affordable range with a retail price of $128. That’s a great deal for travelers who find themselves in need of a cute but sturdy and convenient bag.

La Regale avoid over decoration by focusing on plain silver in this Jersey clutch.

Don’t make the mistake I did and assume that a purse named “Jersey” would be made from that very material. Instead, this clutch is constructed from synthetic leather with a coordinating silver satin lining; very classic and incredibly minimalist. Whilst something made in innovative jersey fabric would perhaps be more exciting, this purse combines sleek looks with rock bottom affordability.

Of course, the minimalist absence of features could just be an accidental consequence of the cheap nature of the purse, clocking in at a spectacular $25! Bargain! For me, however, it is always a good idea to have a few simple purses in the basic evening wear colors to match those awkward dresses or rushed outfits. Spending only a little on them makes them even better!

Inside this is a useful, if slightly awkwardly shaped, purse. It has a handle, so can function as a handy shoulder bag, but will work just as well clutched in your hand. There is even a handy slip pocket for your most treasured belongings.

All in all this is a handy and downright cheap clutch from a respected designer, La Regale. Simply put, it will certainly do!

Bebe manages to prove with this little wristlet that rosettes don’t have to be all sweetness and light. Instead, this purse combines the traditional shape with some edgy on-trend touches.

From the front this rosette clutch resembles something like a corsage, the modern day equivalent of that cute prom night tradition. Wrapped together out of metallic pewter petals, this is round and actually very effective, looking both rock chick and debutante in the blink of an eye!

Of course, a round little purse is never going to be very practical, no matter how punk it makes you look. Even the sweet addition of some little metallic studs on the petals can’t convince me that this wristlet is spacious! That said, if you don’t need to carry much then the round space and tiny little interior pocket should be fine, and will just about hold some cash and a little cell phone.

This rosette wristlet is a great, if surprisingly costly purse, for an evening out, whether that may be a rock concert or an elegant evening party. Team it with some similarly colored metallic accessories to really complete the look!

With its buttery leather finish and sweeping pleats, the Molly Shoulder Bag is a lot like Kooba’s Hope clutch, only bigger.

Just like the Hope, the appeal comes from that combination of oh-so-soft leather and modern diagonal pleats. The angular folds are edgy, especially in this metallic gray, but they’re softened by the luxury skin. The same relaxed look is adopted on the strap, but I’m not sure it works as well there. But once you sling the wide, comfy handle over your shoulder, I’m certain you’ll forget all about the aesthetics!

The Molly offers a more practical layout than the Hope clutch, and well it should for almost twice the price! The extra space is a given, but this shoulder bag has the features to match. We’ve almost come to expect a zippered pocket and two open pouches, but Kooba doesn’t stop there. The dog leash clip takes care of your keys, while another skinny pocket is perfect for pens. Look closely and you’ll also see a zippered pocket and open compartment hidden in the exterior pleats.

Kooba’s taken what we loved about the Hope and given it a daytime makeover. She might not suit the red carpet, but the Molly is still one stylish and sensible number.

Kenneth Jay Lane has always had a taste for the kitsch, embellishing its purses with slithering snakes and snapping alligators. But with the Flor de Mayo, the designer plays it relatively safe.

The pretty flower, crafted from enamel, is a much more traditional accent than any scaly reptile. The look is luxurious, with each petal trimmed in gold and an ivory pearl dotting the center. The bloom sits in the center of the flap, dressing up the fairly plain envelope style.

Modern girls may lament the lack of shoulder strap, but at least the Flor de Mayo clutch is slim enough to easily fit in your hand. Of course that limits storage space, but it wouldn’t be the first clutch which asked us to travel light. A vanity mirror is tucked inside the interior pocket, perfect for those cosmetic emergencies. You won’t have the space to carry your entire makeup kit, but some powder and gloss should have you looking fabulous in no time.

This pale eggshell blue shade is unexpected and lovely. I can just imagine pairing it with other pastels, or watching it pop against a little black dress. If you’d prefer a more traditional party look though, the Flor de Mayo is also available in glitzy gold and basic black.

Max Mara isn’t a name we often touch on here at BagBunch, but the stylish Italian label is full of goodies for designer divas to covet. The force behind the brand might be to produce top quality at reasonable prices, but this company can definitely be categorized as luxury … especially since “affordable” is quite a relative word in the designer world.

Its most recent advertising campaign featuring fashion from the spring/summer 2010 collection stays very true to the label’s classic look. The tone on tone shoot reflects what was seen on the runway: neutrals, neutrals, and more neutrals.

The ads, which feature model Malgosia Bela and were shot by photographer Mario Sorrenti, are a tad boring to me personally. I loved the overall understated elegance of the runway show for the collection, but this particular shot from the campaign doesn’t do it justice.

On the other hand, the handbag in the shot is rather pretty once you are able to separate it from the other stark white of the model’s outfit. I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking or overwhelmingly fashion forward, but it’s classic Max Mara, which is sophisticated and a bit timeless.

Rafe uses its love of all clutches cute and glamorous to create this sun patterned Freida clutch.

What looks at first glance like a smooth metal mesh exterior is actually a simple glossy snakeskin. The beige-gold color just continues this effect, and I think this is a great and good looking twist on the traditionally mouthy snakeskin pattern.

Subtle and remarkably sophisticated as the background may be, Rafe have clearly opted for something a bit more fun with the studded decoration. Many people feel that opaque crystals look a little tacky, but if you like it then the fanning pattern that resembles a sun will probably be a popular choice. I personally like how the colour scheme is subtle yet clearly still suitable for evening wear.

Inside, and considering the useful optional handle, this is a functional purse. It is aways nice to know that when shelling out over $300, you are actually buying something that is easy to use. This pretty purse is just that, as well as being neatly on trend for studding!

I have to admit to having always thought of suede as a winter warmer: woolly and soft and more than a little bit dull. However, this pretty little disco purse from Lauren Merkin just goes to show that it ain’t the material, it is what you do with it that counts!

Here the soft suppleness of suede is utilized to its best advantage in order to create a slouchy and comfortable shape that works to provide pretty looks and an easy to carry clutch. Without a handle to carry it with, a clutch like this really does need to be soft and squidgy!

Obviously whilst this cord-lined Lotte clutch is just about functional (as functional as a clutch ever gets, anyway!), it is also very pretty. The shiny patent print on the suede blings it up enough for parties, but without any over-the-top hardware it can still be easily used during the daylight hours. For a bit of extra security I would have appreciated a zip closure, but I suppose if you keep it in your hand it will be fine.

A classy and glamorous purse that comes with a little bit of a twist, this navy Lauren Merkin purse is the perfect start to the new year.
