Alexis Hudson has put on the glitz with its Miranda clutch.

This simply shaped purse is covered in thousands of tiny sequins. It’s deliciously over the top, or perhaps girlishly garish depending on your point of view! Even if you do love the look of all those metal discs, you won’t be able to rock them everywhere. I’d never take this clutch to a dressed up and buttoned up office function, but it’d work a treat for karaoke night with the girls.

The Miranda’s appeal doesn’t go far beyond its surface though. Its interior is adequate at best, without pockets or a lot of space to speak of. It’s also missing a shoulder strap, a real oversight on a bag covered with sequins. It’ll just take one coming loose for the rest to quickly follow. Asking us to clutch it full time seems like tempting fate.

I personally love the Miranda’s flamboyant sequined finish, but I also feel like I’ve seen it before. Alexis Hudson doesn’t do anything to differentiate its design from so many other sequined clutches, most of them from more affordable labels. With a little searching you’ll likely find a similar purse for less than the $170 Alexis Hudson commands.

Alexander Wang seems to be taking pot shots at his own product with this Dumbo clutch.

With its versatile design and selection from pockets, it’s not lacking in intelligence. And while the leather has a distinctive deep grain, it’s actually not made from elephants! I have no clue where Alexander Wang plucked its name from, but I suppose it sticks in our mind!

The Dumbo’s simple foldover design and conservative color leads us to assume this purse is basic inside and out. However nothing could be further from the truth. There’s a large flat pocket hiding underneath that flap, and a zippered pouch inside the main compartment. With all those little nooks and crannies there’s a place for all your party essentials. Don’t go searching for a shoulder strap though, as this is one important feature Alexander Wang’s missed.

The Dumbo doesn’t make a strong style statement, but it could easily work itself into our daytime or evening wardrobe. That carry anywhere versatility helps us justify spending the hefty $545 Alexander Wang commands!

Alexander McQueen gives the classic bucket style some modern flair with its Padlock Bucket Bag.

The basic bucket shape is there, but its been given a contemporary makeover with oversized zipper pulls, a pretty coral pink color, and a signature golden skull charm. Its gentle slouch comes from the buttery calf leather, which has been tumbled for an extra soft finish.

The Padlock looks the part, but it’s also really practical. Its shoulder strap is completely adjustable and extra wide for comfort, and its interior pockets trimmed with leather for strength. These organizational aids are complemented by the large zippered pocket on the outside. Really the only thing I’m left wanting for is metal feet on the base. It’d be such a shame to damage that gorgeous leather base, wouldn’t it?

At $1272, Alexander McQueen’s Padlock Bucket Bag is an investment, but one I wouldn’t mind making. I’m still searching for the padlock that gives it its name though. Can you find it?

Kim Kardashian’s accessories website ShoeDazzle is changing the way it does business. The company cofounded by the reality starlet is canning its subscription model with the hopes more customers will buy rather than hire.

The site’s 10 million members previously paid $39.95 each month to rent luxury handbags, footwear, and jewelry. Customers could opt out if the available products didn’t appeal or bank their subscription fee as credit for future purchases.

ShoeDazzle will continue to offer a selection of items to suit its customers’ individual style profiles, but the subscription fee has been abolished. By canning the fee ShoeDazzle hopes to attract tens of millions of extra members, who it hopes will purchase the goodies offered.

ShoeDazzle will further entice shoppers with a new extended product range. The company will add apparel, lingerie, and bridal items to its existing accessories lines. This will allow customers to search for an entire outfit, rather than simply accents.

Aldo celebrates mod style with this playful Swapp Shopper.

Its rainbow tiles take colorblocking back to its sixties roots. With the bold black lines between each square, the Swapp appears like a Mondrian artwork rather than a mere carry bag. All those colors probably won’t be easy to incorporate into a busy wardrobe, but if you favour neutrals this shopper could offer the pop you’re looking for.

While it appears like a work of retro art it does its job too, with a choice of carry straps and well organized interior. Open gadget pouches are complemented by a spacious zippered pocket. All are reinforced with leather for durability. The dark lining makes it a bit difficult to find just what you’re looking for, but at least it’s thick enough to withstand regular use. Modern girls may crave a bit more space than Aldo provides, but the Swapp should hold all your essentials if you pack them carefully.

Aldo rarely uses real leather, but it splashes out on the good stuff here. Happily that upgrade doesn’t affect the bottom line too much. At $89.53 this shopper is a steal in anyone’s language.

Guess and Gucci have ramped up their ongoing dispute over their signature looks. The fashion houses are facing off in court after Gucci suggested Guess created, in the words of Gucci lawyer Louis Ederer, a “massive, complicated scheme to knock off Gucci’s best-known and iconic designs.”

Gucci particularly has issue with four key design elements. The interlocking G signature print and square G initial are obvious points of contention. But Gucci also points to the iconic red and green racing stripe and delicate cursive font also adopted by Guess.

Claims of copyright infringement are far from new suggestions. In fact, Gucci filed their lawsuit with the New York federal court way back in 2009. However for reasons that aren’t completely clear, it took until last Wednesday for the companies to appear before a judge.

And that time passed may prove to be Gucci’s undoing. While Guess claims it has no reason to emulate Gucci, it also questions why Gucci “sat on its rights” for at least seven years before launching legal action. Guess attorney Daniel Petrocelli admits that there are similarities between the brands’ design visions, but believes that customers would not mistake one label’s products for the others.

I’ve got to admit that I agree with Petrocelli on that point. Guess has always appeared like a budget alternative to Gucci thanks to its hardware heavy designs and use of synthetics rather than real leathers. But is that argument enough to win a copyright case? A verdict is expected in around three weeks. Which way do you think this case will go?

A laser-cut finish makes this envelope clutch from Alaia a real head-turner.

Alaia’s iconic arabesque pattern is cut cleanly into the white calfskin, allowing the glossy black patent underneath to peek through. Black and white is a classic combination which makes this striking purse more versatile than its contemporary finish might suggest. While it’d look perfect complementing monochromatic colors, I imagine it’d also shine with a more colourful ensemble.

This Laser-Cut Clutch isn’t small by evening accessory standards, but its slender design still limits storage space. You might be able to fit your party essentials inside it, but it’ll be a squeeze. On one hand I’m glad there’s no chain strap to clutter to already small main compartment, but I also worry I could change my tune before the evening ends. That’s when we all want a hands-free carrying option after all!

No one would ever call a $760 purse a bargain, but this one’s quality and modern personality should still help it earn some fans.

Clutch queen Clare Vivier has teamed up with Wren head Melissa Coker to create a striking reversible tote bag.

Clare Vivier and Melissa Coker have created several capsule collections and limited edition items together over the past few years, and its seems their enthusiasm for collaborating hasn’t wavered.

“It was fun to work together again. Melissa’s celestial print is so pretty, I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. I’m happy we were able to make it work as a bag,” Vivier told Refinery29.

The new totes are crafted from Wren’s production remnants, so they’re as eco-friendly as they are luxurious. Each one features a vegetable-tanned matte leather side and a more unusual celestial printed one. Actress Allison Miller’s chosen the head-turning starry side for the advertising campaign, a smart move as the plain underside is a bit boring. However I’m sure the conservative look will get plenty of use when you’re wearing your busiest outfits!

Clare Vivier and Melissa Coker passed over established photographers for Jeana Sohn, the founder of fashion blog Closet Visit. I think the risk has paid off though. While the ad is very simple, it also has an organic quality which stands out amongst glossier commercials.

In your choice of cognac or hunter green leather, the limited edition totes are available for $350 from both Wren and Clare Vivier’s websites. That’s a little expensive for a fairly simply designed tote, but when you consider you’re getting two looks for the price of one it becomes more reasonable.

Stella McCartney chooses simplicity over flash with this Pack Away tote from her line for Adidas.

Stella McCartney’s Adidas products are rarely head-turners, but few are as unassuming as this tote. Its shape is tried and true, and its aqua body free of frills. However it’s got a few hidden perks which make it worth a second look.

Stella McCartney’s materials are always animal friendly, but few are as green as this recycled polyester. By opting for the recycled material Stella McCartney’s minimized her carbon footprint. We can only hope it was colored using water-based dyes or another eco alternative to those traditional chemicals!

The Pack Away’s fabric is far from fragile, but there are small feet on the base to protect it anyway. The interior is minimalistic, but there is a small removable pouch to help us separate coins and valuables from the rest of our cargo.

The lack of any kind of closure seems like a real oversight though. While the flat base should keep our items contained when the Pack Away’s set down, security is still compromised. A zip or magnetic clasp would have made all the difference.

It seems like nit picking to find fault with any bag costing just $40 though. It’s far from the height of fashion or functionality, but it does its job for relatively little money.
