Baggu made its name with cheap and cheerful reusable shoppers, but these days its putting a more fashionable foot forward. This medium pouch is a great example of the label’s chic new approach.

This pouch sees Baggu trade in its familiar rip-stop nylon for luxurious textured leather. The label’s buttery skin is perfect for the purse’s simple foldover style. It’s soft enough to fold easily, and look appealing when it does.

I’m not the greatest fan of the color Baggu calls apricot. This name tends to refer to a fruity orange color, but this shade is approaching tan. I concede that it’s probably more wearable than a true apricot would be, but it’s also not very interesting. I think a simply shaped purse like this needs more spark, don’t you?

While the color might not inspire me, the price is very pleasing. $40 is very affordable for any real leather purse, especially one that’s as versatile as this. Use it to carry the bare essentials during the day or work it as a clutch purse once night falls.

Its fabric body keeps the weight down, so you can make use of all the space its main compartment offers. This is lined in bright pink fabric to help you easily see what you’re carrying. It’s big enough for holding everything you need, but not so big that you need to scrounge about to find what you need. Its long handles help it easily fit over your shoulder, even if you’re wearing a winter coat.

It’s not likely to induce envious stares, but the Shanghai represents great value for just $99.95.

Badgley Mischka goes big and bold with this Annette Hobo bag.

This isn’t a purse for wallflowers. Its oversized dimensions work with its shiny pewter leather to demand attention. It doesn’t do it with a lot of grace or decorum, but it gets results.

I’ve never been a great fan of metallic leathers, and this one does little to change my mind. Its rich pebbling is lovely and its softness makes each pleat fall just right, but that glitzy color cheapens the skin a bit. Perhaps I could stomach it on a smaller canvas, but on such a large bag it feels too much.

Perhaps I could have lived with these bold elements if Badgley Mischka paired them with subtler ones, but it seems the designer doesn’t know when to say when. The chunky chain straps seem like a step too far. While they’re certainly built to last, they make an already busy design seem overcomplicated. I also can’t imagine they’ll be too kind on shoulders either!

The Annette offers a very distinctive look, but not one that I warm to. However if you love a bit of glitz you’ll find this hobo affordably priced at $475.

Classic diamond shaped quilting can usually be relied upon to add class, but nothing can make a bag like this seem luxurious.

It is a cute casual accessory though, and one which should serve moms and their bubs well. By choosing microfiber Baby Phat’s kept the weight down. That’s a real blessing because with baby in one arm and all their essentials slung across a shoulder, the last thing moms need is extra pounds. The two side pockets are perfect for keeping bottles at hand, while the array of interior pockets can take care of other baby must haves. There’s also a change pad included for those dirty diaper emergencies.

If you’re still not convinced, perhaps the price will sway you. At just $19.99, this is one of the cheapest diaper bags I’ve seen!

B. Makowsky’s ditched his usual leather for fabric to create this casual Ollie satchel.

While soft materials are often regarded as leather’s poor cousins, I don’t feel shortchanged by the fabric. Its weathered finish reminds me of denim, and it shares the same casual appeal. The material takes focus in what’s otherwise a fairly safe design. B. Makowsky’s usually so trend focused, so it’s refreshing to see him create a bag that’s made to serve.

There’s a quartet of pockets up front, and a handy phone pocket on the back. I really like this, because we should feel our cell vibrating against our body even if we don’t hear it ring. The interior is every bit as smart, with a zippered envelope dividing the main compartment into three easy to manage sections.

I respect B. Makowsky’s decision to use fabric rather than a more luxurious leather, but I’m disappointed he hasn’t passed any of the savings on to us. At $228, this satchel costs roughly the same price as B. Makowsky’s leather bags. While I love the bag, it should be about half the price. Before indulging I’d wait for a sale!

Ashley M refuses to take itself too seriously with this Panda Face Shoulder Bag.

The label’s known for its novelty creations, and this one may be one of its quirkiest. The attention to detail is impressive, with fuzzy black ears and patches around the eyes and cute leaf shaped zipper pulls. It might seem like it’s strictly for the kids, but the classic black and white color scheme actually works for women as well. You’ve just got to have a sense of humor about it!

This Panda Bag isn’t very large, but it should hold everything you really need to get through your day. A longer zip would make it easier to get items in and out of the main compartment, but it’s a minor quibble. At least the space has plenty of pockets, and another one in the back. The shoulder strap is also adjustable for the most comfortable fit. I’m also impressed that the Panda Bag is well made, something we don’t always see at this price point.

I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on a bag that’s essentially a novelty, but at $38 I don’t mind splurging on a little silliness.

Hermes will auction off four one-of-a-kind purses this May to benefit London’s Royal Academy of Arts.

The bags are new interpretations of Hermes’ Passe-Guide purses. Each one pays tribute to one of the nations of the United Kingdom.

The English bag is crafted from red box calfskin and decorated with a black fur charm which calls to mind the big bearskin hats won by the Queen’s guards. Tartan was a natural choice for the Scottish bag. The distinctive orange plaid was crafted by famed weavers Johnstons of Elgin. We all know the Irish love the wearing of the green, but the color rarely looks as chic as it does on the Irish green crocodile purse. This exotic beauty is capped up with a cute four-leaf clover charm. The Welsh bag rounds out the quartet, with its dark green box calfskin finish and silver dragon charm.

The auction coincides with Hermes’ upcoming London exhibition, entitled Leather Forever. You needn’t be in the Old Dart to participate in the sale though. The bags will be auctioned online via Christies. You’d better start saving if you want to take part. The auction kicks off on May 14 and runs through to the end of the month.
