Ethiopian supermodel Liya Kebede is giving back to her homeland with her ethical fashion label Lemlem.

The brand was launched in 2007, but after Kebede modeled the clothes and accessories in this month’s Vogue Lemlem’s getting a lot more attention. It came out of Kebede’s desire to preserve her country’s weaving traditions and provide employment for the people of Ethiopia.

“They don’t have a market anymore. I wanted to give them a way to showcase their art and get money from it,” she explained.

Since its inception as a children’s apparel line, Lemlem has grown to include women’s clothing, handbags, scarves, wraps, and more. Each item is made using traditional embroidered fabrics handcrafted from a cotton rayon blend.

Lemlem goods, including this Tibeb Bag, are available in selected boutiques in the United States and around the world and online at the brand’s website.

Harajuku Lovers adds a little extra versatility to the traditional cotton canvas tote with the Yippie bag.

From first glance this looks like any ordinary tote, albeit with that Harajuku Lovers flair. Fans of the brand will love the retro rainbow toned lettering which covers the black bag. It’s a busy print, but one that I think adds real character to this simply styled tote. So it’s disappointing to see that the print isn’t continued on the back. We really need something to spice this space up, although for just $38 we can’t really expect it.

While the print is fun, the most intriguing part of the Yippie is its dual carrying options. There are four straps provided: two short handles and two longer shoulder straps. You can just tuck the straps you’re not using inside for a clean look.

The interior is generous but simple. The one pocket is probably a bit inadequate if you hope to fill the tote, but at least it’s secure. That’s a real plus considering the tote’s main compartment has no closure or clasp.

It has its flaws, but for the price there’s a lot to like about the Harajuku Lovers Yippie.

Sometimes Aldo’s bags are stylish, and sometimes they are less so. The ridiculously affordable Savigliano clutch, however, is one of the most stylish Aldo bags I have seen so far!

I think it is the purple shade that makes it quite so pretty. That and the shiny patent exterior, and the geometric and super-elegant striping. Oh, and the texture, full of those bumpy lines. In case you somehow hadn’t realized, the looks have me falling in love with this $19.98 pocket rocket!

However, you can’t just judge a handbag on looks. The thing is that the synthetic fabric suggests it will be tacky feeling and sweaty on a hot night. The heart applique too doesn’t sound all that appealing, although I can’t see it on the photo. The thing is, I suppose, that I want a very cheap bag to tick all the boxes, which is almost always an unrealistic expectation!

Stripy, cute and very pretty, this affordable handbag does look the part.

Big Buddha has given us a real bargain with this $14.89 straw clutch!

Straw clutches are everywhere this summer, and it is hard to turn a corner without seeing yet another version. To set this one apart from the crowd the designers have avoided the typical natural straw color, opting instead for a bright green that could look great with some of the more vibrant maxi dresses on the market. They have also added in a decorative straw bow, which sets this apart from plainer rivals.

Although they have clearly put effort into this summery clutch, I do have a few issues. Not least is the bow, as I am a bit of a bow purist. In my mind they look great in fabric or ribbon, or even, in exceptional circumstances, in buttery soft leather. In straw, however, you lose that definition and shape, resulting in a limp bow that blends in with the background. It is just plain wrong!

Maybe I am overreacting. And, to be fair, this is a very cheap purse. I am just disappointed by how clearly cheap the workmanship seems too.

If all the frills and bows which adorn so many modern handbags are too much for you, consider this utilitarian Setela tote from Gustto.

It’s called a tote, but its dome shape is more typical of a bowler bag, although the soft washed lamb leather gives it a little more slouch than that. This balances the large handle studs and contrast stitching to create a look which is gently feminine without being too fussy.

This medium tote is much larger than its description suggests. You should have no problems carrying everything you need for the office or a day of leisure inside this baby, and with a zip pocket and pair of open pouches you should stay organized too.

I’ve always praised Gussto for their sumptuously soft handles; they’re the kind of straps you can’t wait to feel in your palms. Sadly though these are too short for over-the-shoulder carrying, an option we really need if we want to load this large bag up. The addition of a longer cross-body strap would have made all the difference here.

If you want a purse with space but don’t need to spend too much time lugging it around, this good looking Setela tote might be just the thing. If you’re a girl on the go though, I’d probably opt for a different Gustto bag.

Rolling Stone spawn Georgia May Jagger is making the leap from the Chanel Cruise runway to its advertising campaign. Clearly the fashion house’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld is besotted with Mick Jagger’s daughter’s contemporary look.

“Miss Jagger is the modern girl. She is the girl of today. There is a total identification between her and the clothes. They could be her clothes,” Lagerfeld said. “She is totally at home in Chanel. And that fits in the pattern of what Saint-Tropez can represent, what it is not really and yet what it can inspire.“

I might not be as enthusiastic as Lagerfield, but I do love what Georgia May brings to this campaign. She’s beautiful without being unapproachably so, and she looks great with Chanel’s clothes and quilted purse. Unlike so many icy models, she’s the kind of girl I can imagine going shopping with and sharing a bottle of wine.

I can’t wait to see more of this gorgeous model in future!

I’ve never really warmed to the colorblock trend, so it’s surprising that Guess may be the brand to help me change my mind.

In the handbag world, Guess doesn’t have the reputation of a Gucci or a Givenchy. The fashion house uses synthetic rather than real leather, and has been accused of merely imitating the big names. While it might have followed the others into the world of colorblocking, it’s definitely made its own mark with the Berlin.

Rather than using a rainbow of vibrant skins, Guess keeps it complementary with white, taupe, and pale shimmering gold. The gold tone could easily have looked gaudy, but by toning things down and using it just for accents Guess avoids any tackiness. The crocodile print we see throughout won’t convince any real fashion fans you’re carrying a real exotic, but it still adds a sense of luxury to the purse.

The roomy interior is lined with playful signature print cotton. The space should please gadget loving girls, with its zip pockets and three media pouches. The zippered exterior pocket on the back is great for keeping keys and other small valuables safe and within easy reach.

The use of colorblocked techniques may be right on trend, but by using a traditional satchel shape Guess makes sure this purse will work for a few seasons. With its slightly glitzy appearance the Berlin could easily take you from a day at the mall to cocktails with friends.

After seven years of service, Jean Paul Gaultier will be stepping down as creative director of Hermes. He will show his final collection, the spring 2011 line, in Paris this October.

“After seven fruitful years of creative partnership, Hermès and Jean Paul Gaultier artistic director of women’s ready-to-wear, have decided to bring to an end their collaboration allowing Jean Paul Gaultier to concentrate on his own projects,” a press release reads. “Hermès is deeply grateful to Jean Paul Gaultier for his outstanding creative contribution during these seven years.“

Christophe Lemaire will step into Gaultier’s very big shoes as the iconic brand’s new artistic director. I only hope he’s up to the challenge; few men are as respected in the style world as Jean Paul Gaultier after all. We’ll see what Christophe Lemaire can bring to the French fashion house when he shows his first collection, the fall range, next year.
