Forzieri offers an unusual take on the classic wicker basket with this Capaf Wicker & Leather tote.

I’m frankly not sure what to make of this bag. I admire Forzieri’s daring, but I’m not sure its risks have paid off here. The wicker has an open weave which allows the whimsical spotted lining to peek through. The cherry red wicker is complemented by red leather handles. I’m not sure these are the best match for the bag, but they’ll be much more forgiving on your shoulder than more wicker would be.

A drawstring closure helps keep your items safely inside this tote. Open it up to reveal a surprisingly well appointed main compartment, with a zippered pouch and another small pocket for a cell phone. I expected something much simpler from a bag which takes its cues from a wicker basket, so I’m impressed by these organizational aids.

It’s a little too quirky for my taste but if you’ve fallen for this original Forzieri creation you’ll be happy to note it costs just $254.

There’s kind of a divide in the fashionista kingdom. There are those who go for status, those who look for quality, and those who look for design. Bottega Veneta is one of the few lines that covers all bases and manages to attract everyone from the most superficial label hunter to the snobbiest design freak.

This braided leather hobo combines boho chic with ultra chic and does it all in such delicious candy colors that it’s basically irresistible. The buttery texture of the leather is totally incongruous with the bright color palette, which makes the whole enterprise super interesting. The pink braided details make this bag an eye-popping delight, especially the way they are set off with bright contrasting zig-zag stitching.

The shape of this hobo is a little more square than I like, personally, but it gives this hobo a conservative classiness that makes it more wearable than your usual slouchy hippy hobo. The braided handle is both beautiful and totally practical, and will keep this bag comfortable on your arm no matter how much you put into it. Which, given the generous size, could be quite a bit.

Okay, admittedly the $3,680 price tag isn’t exactly the definition of affordability. But with this combination of quality and style, it might be worth it to invest outside of your comfort zone.

Oh, Jimmy Choo, women all over the world sell their souls just to be close to you. Okay, I may not be much of a poet, but the sentiment remains: Jimmy Choo is a design guru. Which I, frankly, have never really understood, because mostly his shoes and bags seem pretty derivative to me. But I am in the minority.

This Scarlett bag, unfortunately, just looks like more of the same. Admittedly, I’m not much of a floral fan, but this one, in particular is so benign and boring that I’m contemplating a nap just looking at it. I do, however, like the Asian-inspired color scheme, but the print itself lacks oomph.

Plus, the Scarlett is made of denim, which is fine, but not great, and certainly not great when there’s a $950 price tag attached. Seriously? I bet I could find a bag that looks just like this at Target for less than $20. Still, it’s pretty practical, as far as Choo bags go, and it would be a great beach carryall if it weren’t for the shiny leather straps, which would not stand up well to the elements.

Perhaps I’m not being fair? Okay, this bag is perfectly cute and totally wearable for a woman who wants to add a splash of color to her wardrobe and isn’t concerned about the ridiculously high price.

Beth Springer challenges the notion that leather handbags can’t be green with her signature handbag collection.

The Californian based designer believes in zero waste, so she uses recycled leather and suede to create all her handbags. By using reclaimed leather, Springer reduces her carbon footprint, but it’s not purely a green measure. The animal skins are naturally colored with vegetable dyes and then lined with organic hemp-cotton fabric.

Workshop/CoOp’s bags might not be very fashion forward, but they’re making a big impression on leading style icons including Oprah Winfrey.

A recent article in O Magazine helped spread the word about these hand-loomed cotton purses crafted by women in poverty. These artisans earn fair trade wages, ensuring they can put food on their family tables, send their children to school, and lift their communities out of poverty.

Workshop/CoOp creates small and medium pouches, which cost $45 and $60 respectively, and larger market totes which retail for $95. I can imagine the small pouch serving as a make-up bag and the medium one working as a cute tablet case. The market bag is likely to be the most versatile though, with space for gym equipment, groceries, and everyday essentials. Each one is hand stamped and numbered to guarantee their authenticity. They’re quite simple, but they come in a range of cute colors.

Their affordable prices are even more impressive when you consider that for every bag sold, the company donates a six or 12-month supply of hygiene products, including soap, underwear, and absorbent cloths, to a homeless female in Guatemala.

Foley + Corinna abandons its usual casual aesthetic for something more dressed up with this Georgina Clutch.

The Georgina’s not fussy after five wear, but it has a more sophisticated finish than most of the Foley + Corinna line. While it could dress up a dark pair of denims it’d also look perfect with any evening ensemble. Crocodile embossed leather always looks smart, but with gold gilding defining the white scales this finish appears extra rich. The exotic surface works well with the Georgina’s chic angular lines. This is your classic envelope clutch revamped for the 21st century.

The Georgina is larger than most envelope clutches, but Foley + Corinna doesn’t really allow us to make use of all that space. As there’s no attachable strap we’re likely to struggle with it once it’s full. At least there’s a large zippered pocket inside to help us stay organized.

The lack of a shoulder strap is a real functional flaw for a clutch so large, but at least Foley + Corinna seem to be making amends with the price. At $325 I wouldn’t exactly call it a bargain, but it’s quite reasonable for a purse with of such quality and sophisticated style.

Fendi might be a revered fashion house, but even it makes mistakes. The Daisy Clutch is a case in point.

Honestly I’m struggling to find anything to appreciate about this confused purse. I suppose the red fox fur trim is opulent, although it doesn’t seem like it belongs on this playful flower accented purse. Of course the use of genuine fur also has its ethical issues. No matter what side of the argument you fall, I’m sure you’ll agree the pelt hasn’t been used well here.

The glazed ayers snakeskin body is also stunning, but it’s hidden by the silk flap and bold flower. Sadly that decoration cheapens the purse. The glass beads are delicate enough, but they still mask the skin we’re paying through the nose for.

The materials are so opulent, but I don’t think they belong on the same purse. It’s almost like Fendi wanted to prove the purse’s pedigree without considering what really works.

Despite its premier materials, the big flower detail makes the Daisy look pretty casual. Perhaps that’s a good thing, because you’ll want to get plenty of wear from the Daisy. With its hefty $2,270 price tag, regular use is the only way you’ll get your money’s worth!

Betsey Johnson LLC has filed for bankruptcy. The financial foreclosure will see most of the label’s 63 boutiques closing their doors in the coming weeks, putting some 350 employees out of work.

While every effort was made to address the company’s cash flow concerns, it seemed seeking protection under chapter 11 bankruptcy was the company’s only option. Betsey Johnson’s chief financial officer Jonathan Friedman explained bankruptcy was “likely be the best way to maximize the value of the company’s assets, for the benefit of its creditors.”

While the situation is dire, this isn’t the end of the Betsey Johnson story. Johnson herself will continue her post as creative director overseeing the label’s mid-priced Betsey Johnson line. This collection will continue to be sold in Macy’s and other department stores.

“I love the moderate price range,” the upbeat designer told Women’s Wear Daily. “It is in synch with all the girls who are buying my clothes.“

She’s pushing 70 but Betsey Johnson continues to be one of the brightest stars in the fashion industry. While her envelope pushing designs might not always hit the mark for me, I definitely admire her creative vision and hope she lands on her feet. Do you think Betsey Johnson will bounce back?
