Charles David delivers a black bag that is anything but basic in this Cloverfield Satchel.

I’m impressed with the way the designer has combined traditional looks with cutting edge techniques. The satchel appears conservative, but there are so many interesting design elements that we rarely see in a bag that toes the line. Its black leather body is quilted, not with the diamond pattern that we typically spot but with a more unusual geometric design. The wrinkled leather could easily have stood on its own merits, but the quilting only adds to the sense of drama. This lush finish is complemented by a strong turn-lock clasp, a closure which takes its cues from vintage fashion but appears much more modern.

The fold-over design of the Cloverfield makes it feel a bit like a work bag, and I’m sure it wouldn’t look out of place in most offices. Then again, a deceptively simply accessory like this would rarely seem out of place anywhere! Its features do seem to point to that nine to five application though; the detachable cross-body strap and the large interior compartments amongst them.

But it does have flaws that would make me hesitate to carry the Cloverfield regularly. That bold turnlock is lovely, but it’s so heavy that it causes the bag to topple over. That makes over-the-shoulder carrying difficult, and without a platform base to help steady it it won’t stand up as neatly as it does in the picture.

But at $275, this is a reasonably priced purse for its luxurious finish and stylish good looks, despite its design failings.

Salvatore Ferragamo will celebrate Fashion’s Night Out on September 10 with the launch of its new W bag. The luxe accessory, named after the fashion house’s matriarch Wanda Ferragamo, is a modern interpretation of the bag original designed by Fiamma Ferragamo in the 1970s.

It might take its cues from vintage fashion, but its woven leather finish is just as modern today as it was decades ago. Smooth tan leather trim and trademark Gancini buckles complete the purse, which seems destined to be carried to lunches at the country club and other posh daytime dos. Upper crust lasses may be the only ones carrying this bag though, as it will retail for $2850.

Models Elettra Weidemann, Alek Wek, and Caroline Winberg will celebrate the launch by customizing the brand new bag at Ferragamo’s flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue. While the beauties get artistic, DJ Nick Cohen will keep the crowds entertained with a steady mix of tunes. Given the creative theme it’s only fitting that Salvatore Ferragamo will donate a percentage of its Fashion’s Night Out sales to the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Downsize your accessories while maintaining your sense of style with this quilted patent wristlet from Chanel.

It may be small, but this Chanel purse has most of the hallmarks of the iconic French brand. There’s the chic flap, the engraved turn-lock, and that glossy diamond quilted patent leather. All that is omitted is the large interlocking Cs, but I really don’t miss them. They’d make this tiny purse seem far too cluttered, and the engraved turn-lock does enough to remind us of the bag’s heritage.

The red leather is another unexpected touch, and a welcome one for girls who love to take fashion risks. Red may be becoming an accepted fashion hue, but it still never fails to shock us. A vibrant scarlet like this is just the thing for helping a neutral ensemble pop.

But of course, this purse does have its limitations. It’s teeny tiny, with enough space for spare change, credit cards, and little else. There’s something liberating about walking about without possessions weighing you down, but it’s also hard to leave the things you love behind!

Chanel may have downsized the purse, but not the price. At $1350, we really don’t get a lot of bag for our dollar here. Although if you’re a Chanel devotee, you probably won’t mind one bit!

This decorative and somewhat over-the-top clutch from Giuseppe Zanotti is the latest in a line of asymmetrical evening bags that pack a hefty visual punch.

The bag itself has been done before. After all, we have seen the fold-over shape of the graphic clutch, and the over-decoration of the bow clutch. They are all simple evening bag designs that have a decent amount of room and a deep black shade. In this particular case the body is made from twill, hence the texture and stylish looks.

It must be the beads, therefore, that make this bag the unique statement that it is. A complex pattern of cute silver balls and edgy angular mirrored fragments decorates the front flap, making this rocky at the same time as surprisingly pretty. It makes a statement, and whilst it may be a bit too unusual for a proper black tie event, it will look incredibly at home on a night out clubbing.

The question, of course, is about the price. How much does it cost? Given Giuseppe Zanotti’s reputation for mind-blowing price tags, it shouldn’t surprise you to hear that this clocks in at $1,195. So, do you think the decoration and uniqueness is worth it?

When it comes to exotic and rather fabulous skins, Jalda makes some of the most luxurious options on the handbag market.

Take, for example, the Jane tote. This simply designed handbag is made from a genuine snakeskin, hence the incredibly beautiful and authentic texture and exotic pattern. Thanks to the addition of a real quality skin we don’t have to deal with a tacky and generally unattractive faux version, although it is worth bearing in mind the environmental and ethical issues that accompany such skins. On looks alone, however, it is a real stunner!

The design itself is a classic. Simple, effective, and timeless. This is just as good for work as it is for play, with space for anything you may desire to carry. There aren’t any compartments, unfortunately, but that probably does make it a bit more versatile. And, when you are paying a mighty $1,500 for a tote, versatility and timelessness is key!

Whilst the colors and print are quite unusual, I think the quality materials and classic design mean this shouldn’t go out of date too fast. Good job too when it is that pricey!

Luxury meets boho style with this Dimitri Hobo bag.

The relaxed slouch and long, leather fringe give this hobo its obligatory hippie feel. But this is much more luxurious than most boho bags. The soft black leather is truly luxurious, and the tote-like shape elegant. I also love the faceted jewel-like accent which makes the tab closure really pop.

The Dimitri is an enormous bag, but those whopping dimensions are supported by its design. The plush leather handles are long to make over-the-shoulder carrying comfortable, no matter how much you’re toting. And the selection of interior pockets should make it easy to keep all those possessions safe. I’m a bit surprised that those pockets aren’t reinforced with leather at this price point, but this is the only real design flaw I can spot. Treat the compartments carefully and they should last.

The Dimitri is a lovely hobo, but I’m not sure it’s worth its hefty $2250 price tag. I have a feeling you could find a similar bag for less, although it may not have that European design pedigree.

Sydney label Dosh is putting the design envelope with its innovative and sleek range of wallets.

These accessories don’t look so cutting edge at first, but their simple design is deceptive. The purses are made from a blend of high-tech polymer materials including Desmopan. You might not have heard of this fabric yet, but it’s already being touted as the new leather. It’s much stronger though, and able to withstand harsh environments that would see other wallets perish. You might not put your wallet through such extremes, but it’s nice to know it can take the punishment. Green girls should also note that no animals, humans, or waterways are damaged in the creation of these wallets, and the materials are also recyclable.

Dosh wallets are available in a choice of three or six card designs. Most girls will struggle to pare down their plastic to accommodate these purses, but the brand says it hopes to “liberate” us from “excess baggage.” It’s a noble goal, but one I’m not sure our modern consumerist society will embrace.
