Chloe used to be one of the lines that I most looked forward to. In recent seasons, I’ve felt a little ambivalent about its designs, as it’s gotten a little less experimental and a little more trend-centric. Still, I really respect its clean approach to design, and this Madeline tote is a great example of Chloe’s classy past.

The lines of the Madeline are streamlined and super clean. I love the almost invisible stitching and the monochrome details. The Madeline’s features are subtle, indeed, and come by way of gently contrasting edges. The padded look of the strap and its attachment set off the overall sharper edges in a lovely way that any design freak would adore.

The color is really superb. Orange has featured prominently on runways around the world, and this version has a nice burnt look that makes it wearable with more subdued styles. The exposed gold zipper with black attachment looks great up against this smooth backdrop, and gives the Madeline the slightest bit of edginess.

At $2,295, the Madeline is well-priced for what it offers: classic styling that will never look dated with a color scheme that is totally current.

Bottega Veneta has done it again. Combine exquisite materials with classic design, I mean. This eye-catching intrecciato tote is exactly what the line is known for: balancing trends with tradition.

There’s really no escaping this gorgeous tomato red hue, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. Bottega knew instinctively that bright orange would be too much, but that regular red would be too little, so it came up with this beautiful combination. The textures of the bag are all unique, but still complementary. I love the way the way the smooth leather is set off with the zig zag stitching (a Bottega trademark this season), and the intrecciato center panel gives the bag an easy casual look that is well balanced by the glossy watersnake accents.

The tote’s design is a little bit structured, a little bit slouchy, which makes it a great casual everyday bag, but it could easily transition to upscale with a simple wardrobe change. All of the hardware is low key, and the lack of distracting details allows the inherent beauty of the materials to be the focal point. The generous size is ideal  for woman who can’t leave home without their tablet and a small arsenal of cosmetics. I only wish the straps were a bit longer. Luckily, the removable shoulder strap solves that dilemma.

The $3,880 price tag is justified by the ultra luxe materials, but frankly, even though the bag is truly beautiful, it’s a little much to pay for a slouchy summer accessory.

Gwen Stefani tones down her usually cutesy Harajuku Lovers line for this black Yummier backpack.

I’m not saying this black polyester bag is the perfect backpack. Without the usual prints to distract us we see how cheap the material looks. It’s got that tacky gloss that comes with a poor quality fabric. But I appreciate the details, including the cute heart shaped zipper pulls and the spotted webbing. They give the Yummier some personality without it seeming as juvenile as many Harajuku Lovers designs.

It’s the not the most well-made bag on the market. The fabric probably won’t last for more than a few seasons and the drawstrings are a bit flimsy. But while it does hold up you’ll enjoy the padded shoulder straps, two way zips, and deep gusseted side pockets.

Harajuku Lovers fans may be disappointed by the lack of sweet Harajuku girl characters, hearts, and rainbows, so it’s worth noting the Yummier is available in the label’s usual prints. If you’re looking for a backpack that will endure as tastes mature though, this black knapsack is probably your best bet.

Vogue Japan editor Anna Dello Russo has joined forces with H&M for a new collaborative accessories line.

The range features clutch purses, sunglasses, jewelry, and footwear which H&M creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch says celebrate “excess, fantasy, and decoration.” Of course anything that bears the Anna Dello Russo was never going to be anything else!

The line’s accessories are decorated with jewels, snakes, and ornate embossing. Gold and turquoise hues dominate the flamboyant collection. They’re so bold that I can’t imagine wearing more than one of the pieces at a time, but used sparingly these statement items could really make a neutral ensemble come to life.

While H&M loves a collaboration more than the average retailer, this is the first time it’s worked with a fashion figure without formal design credentials. It’s also the first time the department store chain’s released a capsule collection without apparel. Dello Russo calls the pioneering project “an important evolution in fashion,” adding that she is “both thrilled and humbled to be the one chosen to lead it.”

Anna Dello Russo’s purse collection will hit H&M stores across America on October 4. Will you be queuing up to get your hands on some of the pieces pictured?

In fact, I think it looks its best when it’s full! However its best not to overstuff it, as there’s no closure or clasp to keep your cargo securely inside.

Whenever you take it out, just remember to let the Cleo shine like the jewel that she is. She’s the star, so support her with a neutral ensemble and minimal accessories. Otherwise you’ll risk looking like a Christmas tree!

Chanel is encouraging us to splurge on our moms with its new Shell Clutch, which is in stores just in time for Mothers’ Day. The shell minaudieres first made their appearance at Chanel’s spring 2012 fashion show in Paris, and now they’re on sale to cashed up members of the public.

There’s a “budget” pearlized resin version which retails for $33, 000, but if you want the opulent one pictured you’ll need shell out a cool $48, 000. That exorbitant amount ensures your minaudiere is studded with natural freshwater pearls in soft multicolored hues. There’s no denying that it looks pretty, but is it really better than indulging in six typical Birkins?

I can imagine that Disney’s mermaid Ariel would look perfect carrying this purse, and perhaps as her father is marine royalty she could actually afford it! I think it’d also work well for beach weddings, but it’s still a little gimmicky for my taste, and a lot too expensive. As it’s so large there’s just no escaping that feeling that you’re carrying a giant shell!

If you’re looking for value for money, I’d indulge in the pearl covered version. At least you’re getting pearls. No bag made from resin should ever cost $33, 000!

A smattering of studs helps this Pama Shoulder Bag from Gustto shine.

I appreciate the restraint Gustto’s shown here. It knows the studded trend won’t hang around forever, so it doesn’t allow the metal to take over. The studs are small and used sparingly. The finish is almost delicate, a word we rarely use to describe a studded bag. As the Pama isn’t showy its looks should endure long after the studded trend is faded.

That’s a good thing too, because it’s the kind of shoulder bag made for regular use. Its soft brown leather will earn a distinguished patina with wear. It’s spacious too, but so well organized that it works for us no matter what we’re carrying. The bright white lining makes it easy to see everything that’s inside, and as it’s made from microsuede it should repel stains.

I also appreciate the range of carrying options. The dual handles are sturdy and long enough for over the shoulder carrying. When the Pama’s full though, it’ll work better as a cross-body bag. Attach the extra strap for better weight distribution while you’re on the go.

Gustto’s not a big name label, but that only means we can enjoy its bags for less. At $550, the Pama is a great everyday option.

Guess puts its best foot forward with the Alfie Dome Satchel.

I haven’t warmed to the label’s showier styles, but it gets things right here by looking to classic fashion elements. The Alfie’s domed shape has a playful retro feel, while the burnished hardware brings the design into the 21st century. Guess uses the metal sparingly, and keeps its logo blessedly discreet. It looks like the label might finally be learning that less is more.

We couldn’t want for more from the spacious interior. It’s a great size for everyday use, and well organized with a zippered pocket and trio of open pouches for gadgets and sunglasses. The zippered top and snap button closure offer twice the security. The handles could stand to be a shade longer, as they’ll be too short to wear with a winter coat, but that’s really the only functional flaw I can see.

I’m not sure the colorblocked versions have the staying power, but this black Alfie should look fresh until its leatherette fails us. Considering it only costs $115, I’m sure you’ll see value while the materials hold up.

As their name suggests, the Coated Canvas Cyan Series bags are crafted from canvas coated with a weather-resistant finish. The distinctive cyan colored accents and lining add personality and, in the case of the inner lining, protect technology. The Channel Stitched Ruby Series bags feature tough, weather resistant polyester bodies with channel-stitched front flaps. Each one is lined with soft flannel material to protect a laptop and tablet.

It’s also vital that we get our money’s worth, so I’m thrilled to see the Bella’s so usable. It’s large but not enormous, and well-appointed with an array of interior pockets and hardy cotton lining. We also feel suitably pampered by the easy to close zip top, the leather trimmed pockets, and those protective metal feet on the base. This is a bag made to serve, and it performs that functional admirably.

The Bella’s $1495 price tag will be out of reach for many, but if you can afford it I’m sure you won’t regret investing in this timeless hobo.
