Fame can buy a person plenty, but it can’t buy them taste. Even though Fergie and 90210 actress Jessica Lowndes have been spotted carrying this Cleobella Nevaeh drawstring bag, I just can’t see the attraction.

This seems like rock and roll looks by numbers to me. The combination of multicolored stud, leather, and devil-may-care slouch is predictable, and not as all as rebellious as rock and roll should be. The distressed patina leather could have been interesting, but when it’s showered in studs like this we can barely appreciate its weathered finish. The sheer number of studs is overwhelming, and the use of silver and gold only makes them appear more overpowering. And then there are the tassels, which simply seem messy against the sea of metal. Thank goodness that they’re detachable!

I’m much more impressed by the interior, which starts with the handwoven ikat lined interior and only gets better. The pockets are trimmed in more of that patina material for extra strength.

At $480 this is much more affordable than the bags celebrities tend to favor. However I think I’d rather resist following their lead and find my own style!

January Jones has shed her good girl image, and her clothes along with it, for Versace’s newest advertising campaign.

The Mad Men actress poses wearing nothing but Versace accessories in the sensual black and white photos. She’s so magnetic, which is a good thing because that Versace tote leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps I’ll warm to it in person, but in this monochrome photo the geometric patterned purse looks very average.

“I am always on the lookout for the next Versace blond,” explained creative director Donatella Versace, “and in January I feel I have found a perfect Versace woman for the twenty-first century. She is chic and elegant but deeply sensual too – it is a ‘dramatic’ combination.“

Mario Testino was the man behind the lens, capping off a great year which has included the engagement photos of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the opening of a photographic exhibition in London.

The relationship between fur and fashion these days is a tenuous one. The soft pelts of animals have always symbolized opulence, but animal rights activists remind us that no creature should give its life to help us look good. If you don’t mind the ethical implications, this Eden Vision clutch from Christian Louboutin is a gorgeous clutch to carry this winter.

There’s something so inviting about the plush fur ball made from genuine mink. It’s the kind of thing you want to bury your hands in, and rub up against your face. Just be careful exactly where you’re rubbing it though, as that pretty pair of silver shoes that form the kisslock clasp is bound to scratch!

This is really a purse that’s more about luxurious good looks than practicality though. The round shape is gorgeous, but it leaves storage space seriously lacking. I suggest pairing this with a trench full of deep pockets to hold everything you need on an evening out.

I suppose I shouldn’t come down too hard though. At least there’s a shoulder chain, although I’ll bet the temptation to clutch it by hand will be difficult to resist! It’s a great addition once the hors d’oeuvres plates arrive though!

Christian Louboutin doesn’t give us a lot of bag for our dollar though, with this Eden Vision clutch clocking in at $1395. Maybe it’s time to hunt down a faux fur alternative!

I have found new designer Sara Berman’s aesthetic somewhat confusing. I just can’t really put my finger on what’s she’s going for. But if this new Stevie bag is any indication, she’s going for total rock diva and I love it. This Stevie bag is the most interesting bucket bag of the season, by far.

The weathered leather has a rich grape-y purple tone. It’s so dark that, at first glance, it looks black. This makes it versatile in its neutrality, but it will still add an interesting touch of color to your wardrobe. The classic gold hardware makes it look slightly less edgy, but doesn’t take away from the overall rock-n-roll aesthetic. I can’t say for sure that the inspiration for the bag is the iconic singer Stevie Nicks, but if it is, Berman has done a great job channeling her refined rock ‘n’ roll look.

The design of this bucket back hearkens back to the 80s, with a few modern touches. The shape is pure 1984, but the multiple strap combination is a contemporary addition that makes the style far more practical. The exterior zipper pocket is a convenient feature that allows easy access to often need items. That’s particularly useful considering that the size and shape of the Stevie will make finding smaller items difficult.

At $555, the Stevie is very reasonably-priced designer handbag, and one that’s generous size will make it an extremely usable addition to a boho rocker wardrobe.

Chocolate keeps it simple with this synthetic Rayna tote.

There’s little too spice up the playfully curved body, save for the small barbell accents below the straps. I’ve never seen anything like this before, and I’m not sure they’re for me. The hardware is certainly original, but it also seems a little out of place. I might change my mind after looking at them longer, but I think this is a gamble that hasn’t paid off.

I’m much more enthusiastic about the synthetic’s muted pink hue. It’s a dusty rose color, a blessed change from lairy fuchsias and sugary baby pinks. The rest of the color palette is similarly subdued. The purple has stormy gray undertones, while the tan is every bit as neutral as you might expect.

The Rayna’s shape is really made for storage, and Chocolate doesn’t disappoint us here. The interior is expansive, and lined with a classic signature print fabric. Zip and slip pockets are built into the side walls, so we’re really left wanting for nothing. There’s even a longer cross-body strap, ready to help out when we’re spending a day on our feet.

It might not turn too many heads, but for $67.60 the Rayna is a smart and affordable companion.

Model and handbag designer Doris Van Schoyck has died of natural causes at the age of 90.

Van Schoyck rose to prominence as a cover girl in the 40s and 50s. She was one of the first models to wear leotards, for a Life cover in 1943. She also donned a bridal gown in a long-running campaign for Camay soap.

But she was much more than just a pretty face. She developed the Roger Van S. line of handbags and accessories with her husband, the label’s namesake. She was the brand’s chief designer, an achievement recognized with a handbag designing award from the Leather Industries of America in 1966.

Roger Van S. handbags were sold through major department stores like Lord & Taylor and Neiman Marcus through the swinging sixties. Today they’re prized by fans of vintage fashion.

Rest in peace Doris Van Schoyck, one of America’s true female fashion pioneers.

See by Chloe reminds us that a casual bag can still be classy with this urban styled Esteli drawstring bag.

Drawstring handbags always look relaxed and casual, but Chloe ensures this bag from its affordable line doesn’t look sloppy. The gentle slouch is balanced with classic black leather, and a snake-printed suede trim. Colored snakeskin can sometimes seem too glitzy, but this black on black design is rich and reserved.

The Esteli has generous dimensions, but its slim design ensures it doesn’t look ungainly. The interior is lined with hardy canvas and kitted out with a zippered pocket. The lack of pouch pockets is disappointing in a bag of this size, but in a budget line I suppose we can’t expect to have it all.

I’m more enthusiastic about the long cross-body strap, which is adjustable for the perfect fit. I suppose you could wear it as a shoulder bag, but I think it’ll look its best as a cross-body, slung casually and paired with a well worn pair of denims.

It may be from Chloe’s more affordable label, but the Esteli’s $455 price tag is still nothing to sneeze at. However for a bag from the Chloe stables, it’s also not unreasonable.

Madonna’s Material Girl fashion collection for Macy’s has featured a couple of purses, but apparently there’s many more where they came from. The youth collection will expand in spring 2011 to include its own handbag and footwear lines.

These expansions aren’t the only good news for the Material Girl range. After its success in the United States, the collection will be offered through Canada’s Hudson Bay stores from spring.

“The creation and launch of the Material Girl brand was a success in the United States and we are thrilled to expand into Canada,” said Lanie List, the chief merchandising officer for Iconix, the company which licenses the label and owns a 50% stake. “HBC is the premier retailer in Canada and we are pleased to partner with them on this exciting expansion endeavor.  This is the first in a series of new partnerships we plan on announcing for MG Icon properties.“

I can’t wait to hear what those partnerships might be! Will more countries see Material Girl in their stores, or does this announcement hint at something else?
