Lanvin takes the tribal look out of the African wilderness and onto the European runway with this contemporary Ketu shoulder bag.

The wooden beads give this purse its traditional ethnic feel, but the addition of crystals and luxe satin make it feel more high class. Bold brassy links work with the more traditional silver chain to create a really eye-catching shoulder strap. Altogether this is a purse that makes one of the strongest style statements I’ve seen in some time.

I still have my reservations though. Any accessory that’s so bold risks falling out of favor quickly. It also calls for just the right outfit and attitude to avoid looking gimmicky, so it’s probably not a bag we can all pull off. And that chunky shoulder strap, while stunning, looks positively painful!

My final reservation comes with the price, a staggering $1895. Considering its lack of real luxury materials, I think the Ketu is far more expensive than it deserves to be. I could likely find several more wearable tribal bags for that price, and have change left over. But then again, they wouldn’t be Lanvin!

Mm, this is one sumptuous studded tote.

It is no secret that I love studs. I am of the humble opinion that they make any leather bag look tougher and more fashionable, and by the looks of it the fashion industry agrees with me. Burberry has decided that the Biker Jacket is the item of the year, meaning that you are going to need some tough bags to team with it!

Whilst Guess can be (dare I say it) a little boring, they clearly hadn’t read that memo when they created the “Furious.” The clue is in the name, a deep jet black vinyl covered in very stylish but rounded silver metal studs. It isn’t leather unfortunately, not for that price, but the stylish studding and casual-slouchiness go some way to make up for it.

Guess has added functional pockets inside and out to the Furious hold-all, as well as a gently tasteless zebra print lining. It’s not bad really!

Confetti is a real party pleaser, but it’s always such a pain to clean up. You won’t have the same problem with this cute Confetti purse from La Regale.

This clutch gets its name from the delicate clear and black beads that adorn its satin flap. They make a style statement reminiscent of the purses from Guiseppe Zanotti, with one vital difference. While his bags regularly hover around the four-figure mark, this one will give you change from a fifty!

That price does mean that La Regale keeps the beads on the front, but we’ve all seen that same sort of corner cutting from high end designers. Here it’s certainly justified, particularly since La Regale hasn’t skimped where it counts. I’m impressed by the inner slide pocket and the long twisted bead strap. It doesn’t have a lot of storage space, but that’s nothing new for an evening purse either.

That bottom line really does help to silence its critics. At $45, La Regale manages to create a recession-friendly purse which doesn’t skimp on style.

Loewe is the latest fashion house to release a kooky short film. The label’s Blow Up video looks to promote its Amazona handbag.

The James Lima-shot video stars Ana Beatriz Barros and some exploding Amazona purses. Lima has worked on projects like Avatar, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Strange Days so he clearly knows a thing or two about special effects. Those combustible purses look impressive, but do they really belong in a piece of fashion marketing? I certainly wouldn’t want to hold anything that could detonate at any moment!

“James and I talked about deconstructing the Amazona, taking it apart piece by piece, and showing the 12 hours of work [that goes into the making of it], but in reverse and in a bold, provocative way,” Loewe’s Stuart Vevers explained to Style.com. “That’s where the idea of exploding bags came from.“

These kinds of avant garde productions are coming thick and fast these days, even though most of us can’t figure out why. I suppose these weird clips get everyone talking, but I can’t imagine that buzz compensates for this video’s special effects budget.

Loewe Bags on eBay

I started out feeling excited about Gwen Stefani’s foray into the world of fashion, but sadly lately her L.A.M.B. line has failed to inspire me. While the mother of two continues to look fabulous when she steps out, bags like this Darlington simply seem ho-hum.

There’s a little of the attitude the No Doubt singer embodies, but it almost seems like edge by numbers. The static logo print is predictably moody and brooding, and the pair of large pyramid studs on the flap almost seems like an afterthought.

The design is sound though, with a long, wearable strap, durable trimmed pockets, and a hardy faille lining. But the execution seems cheap, far cheaper than we’d expect on a bag costing $175. While that’s not exorbitant, I’ve seen comparable purses at this price made from leather rather than synthetic, and with luxurious straps rather than this sporty woven one.

Again it seems to be a case of paying for the label rather than the bag behind it. If you’re a Gwen Stefani devotee you might see value here, but I’ll take my money elsewhere.

Badgley Mischka has unveiled the first image for its spring 2011 advertising campaign, which stars up-and-coming actress and daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Rumer Willis. Further ads will see Rumer modeling the label’s apparel, handbags, and shoes.

I was initially enthusiastic at the news of Willis’ foray into the fashion world, and she hasn’t let me down. She brings a real sense of drama to the commercial, and a fresh look that makes a great change from the polished models we typically see. It seems she’s also impressed the label’s creative directors, Mark Badgley and James Mischka.

“Rumer is a great muse for the season. She has a vivacious spirit to her; she is young and modern, which is representative of our spring collection.“

Famed fashion photographer Tony Duran captured Willis on a Malibu beach, which made for a very enjoyable photo shoot.

“It was so amazing to play on the beach in beautiful and timeless gowns, I felt like a princess,” she gushed. “Partnering with Mark and James has been such a wonderful experience and I am honored to appear in the new campaign.“

The advertisement will make its debut in the March issues of our favorite fashion rags, including Vogue, InStyle, and Harper’s Bazaar. What do you think of Rumer Willis as fashion model?

Kotur shows us the sophisticated side of metallics with this elegant Peel Flat clutch.

All too often a metallic finish can look too glitzy, particularly on leather or exotic skins. Kotur solves the problem though by using elegant maille. This chain-mail finish is an eye-popping alternative to mesh. It’s so great to see a designer doing something different with metal, and how. Using different colored metals can be tricky, but the geometric design really brings out the best of the brass and silver tones.

The name should alert you to this clutch’s storage limitations. While the metal will give a little and the dimensions are generous, this flat purse will carry little more than the essentials. That also means we’re not treated to a shoulder strap, so I hope you like the cool feel of metal in your hand.

For a relatively affordable $360, at least by designer standards, I don’t mind the Peel Flat’s limitations. That price rarely buys us some a such style statement executed so effectively. Kotur, you’re definitely tempting me.

Stella McCartney isn’t one of my favorite accessory designers, and I’ve never made a secret of that. I admire her commitment to using animal-friendly materials, but they don’t always make for good designs. But she’s sort of surprised me with this fold over tote. It’s over-priced, but remarkably well designed.

The cream canvas combined with the tan faux leather is a classic, elegant look. Although the leather is faux, you really can’t tell it from the real thing. This is literally the first time I have ever said that about Stella McCartney’s materials, and I’m really happy to be able to do so.

The design of this bag is pretty ingenious. It looks great as a curvy-handled tote, but it’s also super chic folded over into a more traditional handbag shape. Okay, so, traditional may not be the right descriptor here, since the style is actually quite eye-catching and unique, but it does have a timelessness that will appeal to a lot of women. It’s also really really practical because of the dual handle options.

As usual, I find the price of McCartney’s designs to be unreasonable. The design is great, but $1,125 is just too much to pay for it.

Feast your eyes on what may be one of the most unusual handbags on the market.

Despite the remarkably affordable $44.59 price tag, the structure of this unusual clutch is decidedly high fashion. It is the layer upon layer of rippled satin, wrapped into rosettes, that make it quite classic. Its abstract shape would, believe it or not, work well with some of the floaty chiffon high-end designer pieces that cost into the thousands of dollars.

Of course, the Teiglin’s pros are also its cons. That ruffled shape is bound to be hard to carry, meaning you will be forced to resort to the drop in chain strap most of the time. I also kind of wish those rosettes carried on all around the bag, although I know that would make it even harder to clutch!

Stylish and affordable, this Avance evening bag is surprisingly high end.

Christian Louboutin’s Sweet Charity Bag was basically perfect, and frankly, I didn’t think it could get much better. But this silver and purple python version takes it to a whole new level in terms of style and opulence.

There’s nothing I love more than snakeskin, except maybe this gorgeously dyed purple and brown snakeskin. Christian Louboutin has found a beautiful way to improve upon nature. The color palatte is warm and rich, and totally unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, especially when you take into account the silver hardware details.

The design of the Sweet Charity hasn’t changed since the original, thankfully. It still has the same edgy, streamlined charm. I love the rhinestone encrusted bow clasp and the slinky silver chain strap that can be tucked inside if you want to carry it as a clutch.

Although this bag is meant for evening, it could definitely work for day with the right combination of attitude and style. The $2,395 price tag is steep, but you always have to pay extra for an icon.
