Magid gets us ready for summer with this playful straw cross-body bag.

Magid calls this a novelty bag, but that description honestly seems a bit dismissive. This cross-body is certainly fun, but I’d hardly put it in the novelty category. Whatever you call it, there’s a certain charm to its bold jewel hues and structured shape. Its fabric and chain strap mimics the luxurious leather and metal ones we see on Chanel purses, while the turn-lock closure has a bamboo look which mimics Gucci. If you’re going to steal style elements, why not replicate the best?

I won’t pretend that this cross-body holds a candle to the accessories from those high end designer labels, and neither will Magid. But at a mere $60, it doesn’t need to go toe to toe with those designer accessories. It’s chasing a different demographic, one which will appreciate its looks without expecting longevity or luxury.

Sure the straw is likely to show wear after a summer or two, but who cares? For that price you can afford to replace it once it starts to fall apart!

Louis Vuitton is the latest fashion label to release a short film. Olivier Zahm, the founder of French fashion and culture magazine Purple, served as both actor and director for this brooding black and white flick.

Alice Aufrey stars as a contemporary version of Bridgette Bardot in the movie, which was intended as a visual representation of the Purple editor’s time in Paris during Fashion Week. Footage takes in Louis Vuitton’s fall 2012 runway show and the Marc Jacobs Louis Vuitton, but it’s not simply about fashion. There’s also some romance, with Aufrey’s starlet falling for Zahm’s motorcycle-riding bad boy. And look out for cameos from Marc Jacobs and Olympia Le-Tan.

Cinema buffs might notice that the short film plays out as a sort of parody of Jean Luc Goddard’s 1963 movie Le Mepris, or Contempt. With that heritage you might assume this Louis Vuitton film is a bit snooty, but nothing could be further from the truth. With so many labels creating artsy short films, it’s refreshing to see Louis Vuitton isn’t taking itself too seriously. There’s a quirky humorous note to this movie which makes watching it really enjoyable.

We usually associate Maddalena Marconi with ostentatious evening bags covered in fringe and crystals. But the fashion house shows it can take its aesthetic down a few notches with this suede hobo.

This is a classic hobo, which slouches in all the right places. The soft suede it’s the perfect material for a bag with such a relaxed finish. It creates that typical hobo silhouette without appearing slovenly. The rich purple shade helps make it feel especially regal.

But you can’t take the flash out of Maddalena Marconi altogether. Stones and crystals are threaded along the handle for an added dose of opulence. Personally I’m not sure this hobo needs them, but I suppose fans of Maddalena Marconi’s usual aesthetic will be happy for their inclusion.

This hobo is sizable, and if you want to push its soft suede walls to the limit it can feel even bigger. There’s no risk of running out of space, although it could become a black hole if you don’t clear it out regularly. There’s a trio of interior pockets, but I still expect clutter to collect in its spacious main compartment.

Maddalena Marconi again employs luxury materials, but they’re far less opulent than the ones it typically uses. That sees this hobo priced at a relatively affordable $495. If you’ve always wanted to own a piece of Maddalena Marconi bought thought you couldn’t afford it, this might be your bag!

Clint Eastwood’s daughter Francesca Fisher-Eastwood has earned the ire of handbag lovers everywhere after destroying a crocodile Hermes Birkin bag.

Apparently the Hollywood heir, who currently stars on the reality series Mrs. Eastwood and Company, worked with her photographer boyfriend Tyler Shields on the stunt. They bought the bag, which retails for $100, 000, then sliced it in half with a chainsaw before setting it alight.

I suppose the attention-seeking duo got some cool photos out of this handbag murder. They shocked some people, and perhaps they even made some sort of artistic statement about consumerism. But when so many people are struggling to make ends meet around the globe, this kind of vandalism seems particularly stupid.

It might not have attracted the same attention, but perhaps if the pair had money to burn they should have donated it to a charity. I’m sure any non-profit organization in American would have gladly accepted what they spent on the Birkin. I say all this with just a hint of jealousy that a 19-year-old can afford a crocodile Birkin bag, let alone afford to buy one just to destroy it.

I have way too much respect for Mr. Eastwood to suggest he hasn’t raised his kids right, but this sort of waste is hard to fathom.

Mar Y Sol adds a little glitz to its eco-friendly raffia accessories line with the Lola Clutch. But has the label done enough to convince you?

At its core this is a very traditional Mar Y Sol purse. Its compact flap-over body is crafted from hand-braided sustainable raffia. That’s nothing new for the brand, but it helps root the Lola in Mar Y Sol’s traditions. The flower-shaped sequins which dot the Lola are something new though.

These glittery accents are very cute, but I’m not sure they really work on this purse. They simply appear tacked on, rather than becoming a cohesive part of the clutch. It’s a step in the right direction if Mar Y Sol hopes to step into after five wear, but it hasn’t quite gotten there yet.

Considering its intricate hand done design, the Lola’s probably worth the $79 Mar Y Sol’s charging. However its appearance doesn’t quite match the bottom line. If you’re looking for a playful day clutch the Lola might fit the bill, but it’ll never take you through to the evening no matter how hard it tries.

Fifth & Pacific Cos, the firm formerly known as Liz Claiborne Inc., has made it even easier for us to own a piece of our favorite fashion labels. The parent company for Juicy Couture, Kate Spade, and Lucky Brand is allowing fans to buy the companies stocks’ directly from their Facebook pages. Now that’s a bit more useful than simply “liking” a page!

The world first initiative shows Fifth & Pacific Cos is leading the way when it comes to social media. It came about through a partnership between Fifth & Pacific and San Francisco based start-up business Loyal3, which has been working on the platform for the last three years.

“It allows consumers to become more deeply engaged with some of the brands they love,” Loyal3 chief executive officer Barry Schneider explained. “There is nothing more loyalizing than ownership.“

Many of us feel dabbling in the stock market is just for big business fat cats and financial geniuses, but Fifth & Pacific Cos makes investing surprisingly accessible. Stocks can be purchased without fees for as little as $10. Customers can also register for regular payments in pre-set instalments of $10, $25, or $50. If you’ve got a little more cash to throw around you could also make a one-time investment of up to $2,500.

Mad by Design takes the path less traveled for this eye-catching Sangria clutch. But has the label gone too far?

I really like many of the Sangria’s elements, but I can’t shake the feeling that Mad by Design got lost somewhere along the way. The three-dimensional geometric design is so striking, and the complementary quilting complements it beautifully. I also really like the way the silver curved frame emphasizes the Sangria’s half-moon shape.

If Mad by Design had left things there, the Sangria would probably be a better clutch. Sadly though it overcomplicated things by adding bronze studs and a gaudy rhinestone covered clasp. The label needs to remember that less is so often more.

A purse like this will never be very practical, but Mad by Design does what it can to make its Sangria user-friendly. It’s a little longer than your average clutch, so we should be able to sneak a few little extras inside it. It also has a card pocket, so it’s a bit easier to leave our wallets behind. I don’t think the silver chain strap really gels with the rest of the design, but it’s a convenient addition nonetheless.

The Sangria had the potential to be a really stunning purse, but it hasn’t quite reached those dizzy heights. However for $34.95, it still represents great value.

Luisa via Roma has embraced its kitschy side for a good cause. The leading online shopping destination has released this cute Desmo designed shopping bag to benefit UNICEF through its Pug Dogs for Happy Kids scheme.

This Pug Dogs for Happy Kids initiative has been around for some time, but it’s only just crossed our radar. However, as with all charitable projects, it’s a case of better late than never!

From March, Luisa via Roma sold 21 designer decorated plush pug dogs. The pooches customized by Balmain, Emilio Pucci, and Roberto Cavalli fetched thousands on euros, which almost makes the $197 related tote seem like a bargain. Such a simple tote should probably never command close to $200, but relatively speaking it’s affordable.

Just like the stylish soft toys, sales of the Desmo designed tote support UNICEF’s Project ARISE, a scheme which stands for Appropriate Resources for Improving Street Children’s Environment. The initiative looks to help Bangladesh’s street children integrate into society. UNICEF works with the kids to help them find homes and give them the education they need to succeed.

The Desmo shopper looks like a bit of fun, but there’s definitely a serious side to this dog decorated handbag. It’s available exclusively through Luisa via Roma.

I can’t promise carrying it will make you one of the cool kids, but the bold face print of M. Andonia’s In Crowd cosmetics case must make life more fun!

The print is really inspired, with colored faces in amongst the sea of black and white folks. The artistic pattern reminds me of something Andy Warhol might have come up with in his heyday. I love that rather than following trends it goes its own way, just like those folks in the in crowd do!

The pattern dominates here, as it should on such a simply designed purse. That same back to basics approach is applied inside. Personally I’d prefer a few more features to keep my cosmetics in order, but I’m not surprised to see a very simple main compartment. As it’s meant for holding the essentials you need on a night out rather than your entire cosmetics arsenal, clutter shouldn’t be a real concern.

While $80 isn’t a lot of money to spend, it’s probably more than we should on a purse so simple. The In Crowd does the job with some style though, and perhaps that’s enough to tempt us!

Lux de Ville showcases its rockabilly style with this Atomic Tote.

After seeing so many sparkly vinyl accessories from the label, I’m thrilled to see it branching into another direction. The leopard printed fur finish suits Lux de Ville’s retro aesthetic perfectly, and is a great match for the shiny black patent trim. I could have done without the quilting as leopard print is already busy, but it’s so subtly done I can’t complain too much.

This look isn’t the only Atomic Lux de Ville offers. In fact, most of the bags feature that familiar glittery vinyl. However as the side panels are still made from leopard print, these totes don’t appear quite as cohesive in my opinion.

Whichever Atomic you pick, you’re likely to be impressed by all the space it offers. It may be too large for some girls to use on an everyday basis, especially as there’s just one zippered pocket, but I imagine it’d make a great weekender or carry-on travel bag.

Just like the rest of the Lux de Ville range, the Atomic is far from luxurious. However that cheap finish just adds to its rockabilly aesthetic. Don’t expect it to be around for a long time, but fans should get their $95 worth.
