The peace sign is embroidered, rather than screen printed on, which makes it appear a bit richer than the Peace & Love’s price might suggest.

The handy front pocket complements the even larger one behind it. The two sections help students keep their school supplies organized. I wish the more spacious one was completely padded, rather than just padded on the back. This would have made the bag much more practical for students carrying their laptops. However I suppose some padding is better than nothing, and honestly better than we might expect at just $49.99!

This backpack is pretty basic, but its eye-catching design should be enough to endear it to young girly girls. Its styling isn’t likely to endure much past a year or two, especially considering how hard students are on their accessories, but at this price it won’t cost too much to replace.

The handles could stand to be a bit longer, as modern girls always enjoy a hands-free carrying option. However, they do maintain the Gia’s playful retro look.

At $895 this bag costs a lot more than loose change, but it’s not unreasonable for an investment in your fashion future.

A new French public service campaign is reminding tourists to steer clear of counterfeits.

The ads, which are the work of French luxury goods group Comite Colbert, inform readers that buying imitation goods in France carries a maximum penalty of three years in jail and a € 300,000 fine. The campaign’s images were provided by leading luxury labels including Cartier, Christian Dior, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. Each graphic is displayed alongside a playful, memorable slogan.

Some ten thousand posters will be displayed prominently in France’s 18 airports this summer, ready and waiting to catch the eyes of the nation’s visitors. The measure hopes to curb France’s booming counterfeit industry, which is thought to cost the country around 6 billion euros, the equivalent of $7.5 billion, every year. The practice also has a negative effect on an estimated eight out of 10 of the continent’s business. Half of all Europeans also believe that counterfeiting discourages legitimate firms from releasing new products into the marketplace.

The advertising campaign is just one of Comite Colbert’s planned attacks on the counterfeit market. It’s also just signed an agreement with the French postal service and many other leading shipping companies to prevent the nation’s citizens buying imitation goods online. It still needs banks and payment service providers to join the program, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.

Are commercials the best way to stamp out the counterfeit trade, or does France need to take more drastic measures?

Melie Bianco has fun with fashion with this Brenda Bucket Bag.

The label stops just shy over overdoing things here. There’s an awful lot going, but the Brenda still seems strangely cohesive. I love the way the modern slashed panels work with the tightly woven piping that runs between them. The studs that run along the top and straps probably take the design a step too far, but the metal’s so delicate that it’s not really a deal breaker for me. While I’d prefer a few more color choices, the playful turquoise hue is a fun option for this youthful design.

The Brenda’s a great size for everyday use, and it’s got the features to match. Inside we’ll find a slide pocket for a cell phone and a zippered pocket for valuables. These complement the zippered pocket on the bucket’s back. The handles could stand to be a little longer, but until coat season hits they should slip over your shoulder. And once you’re feeling the winter chill, you can just add the longer strap. The drawstring’s a bit fiddly, but at least there’s a magnetic clasp underneath to make the Brenda more secure.

As with the rest of the Melie Bianco label, the Brenda is far from luxurious. Its leatherette is thin and a bit tacky. But as it’s slashed up we barely notice, except when we’re at the checkout. By choosing synthetic Melie Bianco’s kept the Brenda’s price down to an affordable $114.

She’s probably got designer handbags to spare, but Kim Kardashian is still understandably incensed after a few went missing at Heathrow Airport. The reality TV starlet claims British Airways employees pilfered the luxury purses and a pair of sunglasses owned by her late father from her luggage.

On arriving home from a promotional tour of London and visit to the Cannes Film Festival, Kim K says she found her suitcases were much lighter than they were when she checked them in. She went through the trunks to find several handbags and the sunglasses missing.

“Very disappointed in British Airways for opening my luggage & taking some special items of mine! Some things are sentimental &not replaceable,” she tweeted in disgust. “What happened to the days when you could lock your bags! We need to get back to that. There’s no sense of security & no trust! Shame on you(sic)“

Kardashian has asked British Airways to analyse CCTV footage to find the culprits. If she receives no satisfaction it’s rumored she may take the matter to police.

This sort of publicity will do British Airways no favors leading up to the London Olympics. Hopefully this matter can be dealt with quickly to alleviate the fears of sports-mad travelers!

Oversized jewels help punch up this pretty pleated Forlia purse from Menbur.

Personally I think the jewels are a bit too big and chunky, but they might strike a chord with girls who shun traditional evening purses. They make the Forlia feel modern, despite its classic pleated base and frame design.

Evening clutches are rarely functional. It’s just the nature of the beast. If they’re petite like this one, we don’t have a lot of space for stashing our party essentials. If they’re larger they become difficult to manage. It’s a double-edged sword and there’s no easy solution, except perhaps to accept the situation and pare down our cargo. At least the tuckaway chain strap adds a little convenience.

A few more color options would also have been well received. I like this pearl gray one well enough, but it won’t work with every evening ensemble. For this price, we might have bought more if only we had some extra selections.

I feel the Forlia looks like it’s been thrown together. It seems to lack the cohesiveness of many Menbur designs. But it offers something different for after five wear, and I’ve got to respect that, especially when it comes with a very reasonable $67 price tag attached.

McKlein’s created a briefcase for the stuffiest of offices with the Ashburn.

This unisex design has all the hallmarks of a McKlein bag, with none of the playfulness. Frankly I miss the label’s usual feminine hues. While the black, brown, and cognac options are perfect for serious workplaces, they won’t satisfy anyone working in a more creative environment.

But perhaps these workers aren’t the Ashburn’s target market. It’s a very smart bag, with a minimalist exterior and high quality design. Its pebbled calfskin leather is lovely if a bit boring, and its sleek lines are so sophisticated. You could step into any boardroom carrying this baby, confident you could clinch any big deal.

It’s well designed too, with a pair of spacious compartments divided by a secure zippered envelope. Some padding in the laptop compartment wouldn’t have gone astray, but its soft lining should protect your computer from scratches. I also really like the front organizer pocket, which has space for pens, business cards, and other office essentials.

At $270 the Ashburn represents a bit of an investment if you’re at the bottom of the career ladder, but it’s one worth making if you want to start your ascent!

Photographer Tyler Shields is looking to make amends after he destroyed a crocodile Hermes Birkin bag, reportedly worth $100, 000, with his main squeeze and muse Francesca Fisher-Eastwood. The snapper and Clint Eastwood’s daughter received widespread condemnation earlier this week when they chainsawed the luxury bag in half before setting it alight.

Shields says he takes full responsibility for the stunt, which many believe was a desperate attempt to publicize Fisher-Eastwood’s reality TV series Mrs Eastwood & Company. He says he’ll donate the $100, 000 invested in the handbag to a needy family.

However there is a catch. He wants someone to buy one of the photos, although he neglects to say how much he’ll charge for the dubious art.

“If somebody wants to buy one of the Birkin photos, I will donate $100,000 … to a family,” he said. “I will give one family in need $100,000 cash.“

While Shields has been painted as a privileged white male with little understanding of the value of money, he claims he faced financial hardships as a teen when his father suffered a stroke. He hopes that perhaps a family who also has someone affected by a stroke or another medical condition may receive his generous cash donation.

“I think that if somebody had done that for us when that happened to me, it would have been like a miracle,” Shields explained. “So, I’ll find somebody who that just happened to and I will help them out.“

It’s a substantial gesture, but my cynical side feels like it’s just another attempt to drag this saga out. Should we give this pair any more air time?

The Epea’s main compartment is spacious, but we can make it even larger by undoing the zip which runs around it. In this mode its enormous, but the standard trio of pockets makes the space feel more manageable. I really like the soft fabric lining, which eco-conscious shoppers will note is made from recycled plastic water bottles. However I wish Matt & Nat had chosen a lighter hue. The dark color makes the Epea’s interior feel a little bit like a black hole!

The Epea isn’t perfect but it’s another stylish and sustainable offering from Matt & Nat that’s well worth its $155 retail price.

Hermes has reiterated its commitment to family values by naming Axel Dumas, a sixth-generation member of the founding family, as its new chief executive.

Dumas will share the chief executive officer responsibilities with long time holder of the position Patrick Thomas. Dumas began working for the family business in 2003 and he has quickly risen through the ranks.

One might assume that Thomas would feel slighted to share the role he’s held since 2006, but he seems gracious at the news of the company restructure.

“I have been working with Axel for more than six years; he has all the competences for the job,” Thomas said. “I am glad a member of the Hermès family has been brought in to succeed me.“

After all, at 65 Thomas knows he’s not going to run Hermes forever. He was actually keen to retire some time ago but stayed on at the insistence of the company.

It seems Thomas will share his knowledge with Dumas before stepping down in mid-2013. At that time Dumas will become Hermes’ sole chief executive officer.

Even if LVMH has a takeover brewing as some industry forecasters suspect, this latest business decision should help Hermes’ founding family assert control of the company it built for some time to come.
