Fashion snobs may wish for genuine leather and fur, but the use of high quality manmade materials here actually looks quite stylish. It’s also much more animal friendly, and more affordable! Big Buddha gets away with the cheaper alternatives by keeping the colors earthy and realistic. I like the complementary tones of this brown bag, but it’s also available in black.

By using fur, Big Buddha’s created a bag that’s very versatile. I think it’d look just as good paired with jeans and a T-shirt as it would with a more evening appropriate outfit. I love a bag that can be dressed up or down, especially when it comes with as many features as the Alvin.

There are pockets on the front and back, and many more inside. The strap is also adjustable for just the right fit, and long enough to suit cross-body wear. It’s also detachable, although I think this purse would be too awkward to carry as a clutch.

While it’s too big to hold by hand, this cross-body is smaller than many handbags on the market. You might struggle to fit everything you need make the day to night transition inside, but it’s also not going to weigh you down.

At $74.95 this is one of those special bags that looks much more luxurious than it really is.

Hayden-Harnett has teamed up with Walt Disney Signature to create a Pirates of the Caribbean inspired accessories collection. The limited edition goodies will be released in May, the same month as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth film from the Pirates franchise, hits theaters around the world.

The pirate inspired range features leather handbags with treasure chest style locks, hardware heavy leather cuffs, and anchor decorated silk chiffon scarves. Hayden-Harnett co-designer Toni Hacker says she took inspiration from the pirate costumes and vivid characters of the new Pirates of the Caribbean film.

She added that the Disney staff were a dream to work with, and the collaboration with them allowed her to push beyond the boundaries of regular Hayden-Harnett collections.

This may not be the last time Hayden-Harnett collaborates with Disney either. Hacker says she’s a big fan of Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Escape from Witch Mountain, and Dumbo, and she’d especially love to create a Mary Poppins collection.

The limited edition Hayden-Harnett Pirates of the Caribbean accessories are available for pre-order through the Hayden-Harnett website from April 1, ahead of their May 1 release.

Maison Martin Margiela knows how to take simple designs and make them extraordinary and iconic. It’s for this reason that he’s been able to develop a spotless reputation in the fashion world in a relatively short period of time. This large leather bag is a great example of his minimal aesthetic.

The taupe leather on this bag is the definition of neutral. If the design wasn’t so good, the color might seem boring, but since the whole spirit of the bag is this pared down aesthetic, it really works. The smoothness of the leather contributes to its versatility, and the cream cotton shoulder strap offers a subtle, but significant contrast.

What I really love about this bag is the shape. It’s a duffel, but an off-kilter one. It’s smaller and more angular than your average duffel and the zipper goes all the way around the bag, which makes it very convenient to get in and out of. The sturdy top handle and reasonable size make it perfect for an avant garde briefcase.

The price, at $1255, is higher than that of the rest of the Margiela line, but well worth it in terms of style.

Box clutches have become something of a speciality for Menbur, and so it isn’t a surprise to see the label producing yet another solid little evening bag.

Whilst many of the Menbur box clutches are remarkable looking, the  design of this particular clutch is a lot more traditional. In fact, it is kind of disappointing to see the oh-so-predictable satin and diamanté combination. Don’t get me wrong, I know that this is a pairing that works really well for formal black tie events, but I just don’t know if the comparatively boring design is enough to make this evening bag stand out from the crowd.

Of course, there isn’t really anything bad about this satin clutch. It is even pretty spacious, and offers an optional long chain strap. I just have niggling doubts design wise, but it may well be that you think the diamanté decoration is just the thing to accompany your ball gown!

This bag, unfortunately, combines two things that I am really tired of: canvas totes and graphic prints. Since when does slapping a kitschy silk screen down on a plain cotton bag count as “designing”? Ugh. Personal grievances aside, the Boat bag is pretty cute, even if I feel like I’ve already seen it a million times.

The mint green color of the Boat tote is very of the moment. Pastels are everywhere these days. This mint has a crisp fresh appeal that is more interesting to me than the peachy pinks and baby blues I’ve been seeing so much of. The print can also best be described as cute. The anchor design has a sweet retro appeal that I like, even if I’m not sure how many people will buy a bag just for boating.

The simple canvas carryall has a totally traditional style that is versatile and easy to carry. If it were lined, It might be a little more durable, but the canvas will do a pretty good job on its own.

Overall, the bag is cute, but it’s not particularly original and I’m not sure it’s really worth its $135 price tag.

Intricate leather work and some exotic textures make this Carla Mancini tote a truly luxurious option.

Carla Mancini rarely does things by halves. Woven leather work is always gorgeous, but it is as if she has stood back from her creation and asked what else she could have to make it look really posh? The answer? Well a crocodile print leather of course. You should never have one without the other!

OK, so I jest. Yet even so, there is a lot going on in the Grace purse. Were there more than one color it would be terribly over-the-top, but thankfully the monochrome tan leather means it all blends together and somehow manages to work. As such, the leopard print version goes over the top, meaning woven leather beats hair-calf hands down in my book.

Once we get past that sumptuously soft exterior we reach a purse that is surprisingly spacious. With exterior and interior pockets and the option of a long strap to convert it into a satchel, there isn’t really much to complain about other than the $600 price tag!

Mary Frances creates another cute and kitsch little number with this Call Me shoulder bag.

I’m used to novelty bags from Mary Frances, but this one is a bit more obvious than most. Dark beads and jewels create a retro style telephone, complete with a numbered dial. It’s as adorable as it is silly, which is precisely the point. This could be just the accessory for those dull parties, as it’s sure to start people talking!

I probably don’t have to tell you that the Call Me isn’t very practical. How could anything shaped like a phone be so smart? But its irregular shape should be large enough to hold the barest of essentials, and it does have a long and stylish chain strap. Really, on a purse like this those perks are the best we could have hoped for.

Whether this Call Me evening purse will work for you probably depends on how daring your fashion tastes are. Personally I think the use of black and classic metallics helps Mary Frances get away with this fashion risk. But would I spend $272 on a novelty purse, no matter how intricate or well made? I’m not sure, but I certainly wouldn’t blame the girl who does!

The simple things in life are often the best, but sometimes they’re just downright boring. The jury’s still out on what camp the Sleek clutch from Whiting & Davis falls into.

I admit, my first impression was to dismiss this purse as a half-hearted attempt from the metal mesh masters. The Sleek’s really simple, and it seems a bit dull in comparison to Whiting & Davis’ recent boundary-pushing releases. But the more I look at it and realize its features, the more I’m tempted to change my point of view.

A polyurethane strap helps this clutch convert to a shoulder bag once the drinks trays start to circulate. I appreciate the use of PU over chain here, as it’ll be much kinder on bare evening shoulders. This is a very slender bag though, which is both a blessing and a curse. While it’ll look just as sleek as its name suggests, it’ll show lumps and bumps if you try to overstuff it.

The Sleek isn’t a purse to steal the show. Instead it’s meant to complement an eye-catching outfit, and it does that job very well. So long as you know how to travel light, this versatile Whiting & Davis clutch represents excellent value at $83.

Duffle bags tend to be masculine, utilitarian creatures, more concerned with getting your stuff where you need it to be than making a style statement. So I’m thrilled to see Kensie Girl having a bit of fun with the handbag style with this Truffle Duffle.

This girly bag certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of cappuccino, but I’ve fallen for its whimsical charms. I love its ruffled sides, and the studded bow which decorates the handle. Given that it costs just $59 it won’t surprise you that this purse is made from synthetic rather than real leather, but I don’t think that’s such a bad thing here. The stiffer fabric gives those ruffles structure and ensures they sit up just so.

It looks like a bit of a show pony but make no mistake; the Truffle Duffle knows it has a job to do and it does it well. It’s luxuriously large, but with a generous zippered pocket running down the center it never feels unmanageable. Side wall pockets are trimmed with more of that synthetic to ensure they’ll go the distance.

This duffle bag is fun and feminine, but I think Kensie Girl pushes things just far enough. Rather than treating us to lurid pinks and purples, it chooses more mellow tones to temper all those frills. Look for the Truffle Duffle in black, sandstone, lemon yellow, and aqua splash blue.
