With a little black clutch the magic is in the detail.

In the case of the Sutton clutch, Michael Kors has put the effort into those very details. The first touch is in the fabric choice, a  genuine python leather that, as always with exotic skins, oozes class and sophistication. That said, at the same time it is obviously unlikely to go down well with people who like their handbags to be free of animal products, but thankfully there are many other black clutches as alternatives on the market!

Those details continue in the big fat gold metal buckle positioned right in the centre. It’s a design that has certainly been done before, but that doesn’t mean it looks bad! In fact, it’s probably an old favorite for a reason! Still, a well proven design doesn’t mean you can skimp on the practicalities, and as such it is shame there isn’t a handle option, when a long cross-body strap would have worked so well.

Enjoy the good karma that comes with carrying a green bag like this Karma Tote from O’Neill this summer.

The Karma is just the kind of purse that makes me thrilled the warmer weather is here. You could never get away with its casual woven straw body during winter, but now that it’s June we can feel free to hang loose. The natural straw body is complemented by gold synthetic handles and pretty tribal beaded tassels.

The Karma is a large bag, but I’d resist the urge to load it up. Straw is notoriously brittle, and it could easily give way under the strain of all your worldly goods. There also aren’t any pockets inside, so if you want to find what you’ve packed I’d keep it to a minimum. It’s a bit disappointing that we can’t use all the space O’Neill provides, but it’s also not unusual for a straw bag.

If the Karma does break under the strain at least it won’t cost a lot to replace. At $38 the Karma is affordable enough to compensate for its limitations.

British singer Florence Welch is the new face of Gucci. The soulful singer may seem like a left-of-field choice, but it seems the label’s creative director Frida Giannini has had her eye on Ms Welch for some time.

Giannini says she had the singer in mind while designing Gucci’s latest fall/winter line.

“As I was imagining this collection I was thinking of a strong and somewhat mysterious muse. Florence is that kind of woman,” she explained.

The pair first crossed paths at the Grammy Awards earlier this year, and Giannini was immediately “captivated” by Welch’s presence. “She also has that confident and self assured look that goes hand in hand with the Gucci woman,” Giannini added.

It might seem strange to cast a singer in the new advertising campaigns, but Gucci has a history of working with some of the major players of the music world. Mark Ronson and Rihanna have appeared in previous campaigns, so why not the striking redhead?

Personally I think it’s a really smart choice by Gucci. Florence Welch is making some really interesting music at the moment which stands out against all the bubblegum pop and generic hip hop. She’s also statuesque and absolutely stunning. Do you think she’s the right woman for the job?

Nine West serves up some serious attitude with the Rockin Out satchel.

I’ve seen so many fashion designers attempting to create edgy, rock and roll looks, but never quite like this. Narrow strips of synthetic are threaded through silver chains to create a striking textured finish. Those accents are complemented by a smattering of studs and the synthetic’s silvery gray finish. The key here is restraint.

Nine West could have added many more studs, and given its accents greater contrast with a classic biker black synthetic. But that would have been too much, muddying the look that’s already achieved.

Not that this is the perfect rock and roll purse mind you. Nine West is a cheap and cheerful label, and its materials are where compromises are made. The synthetic will never pass as real leather; it’s not as thick or as soft. But this is the sacrifice we make for the affordable $99 price tag.

Nine West hasn’t sacrificed practicality for that bottom line though. This satchel has plenty of space and plenty of pockets, each lined in more of that synthetic for extra strength. Its handles are a little short for easy carrying, so Nine West has also offered a much longer, attachable strap.

It may not be high fashion, but girls with attitude will enjoy great value for money with this Rockin Out satchel.

Take note L’Wren Scott. German fashion label Liebeskin Berlin has launched a collection of casual leather bags, and the most expensive of the lot is just $370.

Now this is a label that I would call “well priced.” The purses in the range start from $250, and the leather is every bit as luxurious as the skins used by the high end labels. The label keeps its costs down by using a mix of suede and washed canvas. That blend makes the handbags perfect for everyday wear, although you may not want to take them to that posh restaurant.

Liebeskin Berlin handbags were inspired by the laid back girls of the German capital, but their relaxed appeal is much more universal. I can imagine them working just as well for laid-back beach lovers in Los Angeles, or the casual ladies of the Mid West.

The attention to detail is what impresses me most about Liebeskin Berlin. The on-trend perforations in the leather, the covered zipper pulls, substantial handles, and metallic weaving all make the label’s purses feel opulent, even if their price tag doesn’t agree.

Nina Ricci delivers a bold new take on patchwork with this Patchwork Bag.

From a distance this seems like a very traditional Chanel-esque purse, with its front flap and gleaming golden fold-down clasp. But get closer and you’ll see this Patchwork purse isn’t quite as buttoned up as it appears.

Soft lilac fabric is artfully arranged into a messy kind of patchwork, with exposed, frayed edges and zigzag stitching. In a less luxurious fabric the effect might have appeared rock and roll, but in this pale purple material is appears spontaneous and dramatic. It’s like no patchwork I’ve ever seen, which is a very good thing. I thought patchwork was all but dead in the water, and if a traditional approach were taken this purse may have been too.

Instead it’s a real statement piece completed by its golden chain strap. Its slender design means you’ll need to pack it carefully, but with a little effort you should be able to fit everything you really need inside. There’s also an organizational pocket inside to help us out.

The price, a hefty $1900, is sure to be the kicker for many fashion fans. But if you’ve got the money to spare this shoulder bag is an exciting way to make a style statement.

The Sweet Charity line is one of Louboutin’s most popular. It’s no wonder why, either, because all the bags in it are classic and beautiful. I’m glad to see, though, that Louboutin is taking a few more risks in terms of materials. The result is a beautifully irreverent design.

Calf hair is always my favorite choice for animal prints. It lends an air of authenticity, not to mention texture, to the print. The black and gray leopard spots on the Sweet Charity are bold, but still versatile.

I am absolutely smitten with the combination of materials on this bag. The contrasting leather straps converge on the front flap at the multi-dimensional closure. The silver metal mesh bow with studded brown leather detail is pure genius. It may look a little unwieldy, as far as fastenings go, but it actually conceals a perfectly reasonable magnetic closure.

At $1,095, the Sweet Charity is pricey, particularly for its small size. But it has an amazing look that will stay amazing for seasons to come.

Nicole Miller uses studs to add elegance rather than edge with the Stella tote.

Nude leather might be right on trend, but I’ve always found these beige shades a bit boring. However with the addition of a smattering of nickel studs along the center panel, I’m interested. Their round shape, brassy color, and delicate size makes these studs seem feminine and sophisticated, rather than full of rebellious attitude. It’s a clever trick which makes the Stella both classic and contemporary. It certainly looks of the moment, but I wouldn’t push it to the back of the closet once nude tones and studs run their course.

Inside the Stella is every bit as appealing. It’s packed with pockets which are trimmed in leather to help them last. The pale lining makes it easy to see everything you’re carrying, and while it may stain we’re the only ones who’ll know about it!

At $500 the Stella isn’t a cheap bag, but it’s just what I expect to pay for an accessory so stylish and well made.
