Roxy Spicy Hobo | Classic Black Pebbled Synthetic Handbag

Posted on: Jul 5

Roxy Spicy HoboRoxy promises plenty, but with its Spicy hobo it delivers a bag that’s lacking in heat.

Labels set themselves up for failure when they choose such ambitious names for their bags. If you promise us spice, you’d better deliver it! However this hobo is just like so many others with its color-by-numbers approach. Crescent shape, check. Slouchy silhouette, check. Casual boho vibe, check and check. And yawn. There’s nothing wrong with a company taking a traditional approach to design, but when it’s paired with such a glowing name we’re left feeling underwhelmed.

The Spicy certainly isn’t a bad bag. It’s made of synthetic, as we’d expect at this price point, but its pebbled treatment makes it a pretty good leather mimic. It’s thin and not incredibly soft, but from a distance only discerning fashionistas would know the difference. The wrapped handles are also quite stylish, as well as being pretty functional.

The Spicy’s interior has plenty of space, but its single zippered pocket is inadequate for keeping such a large area organized. I hope you know how to keep your items in order, because this bag won’t help you out.

However we never expect the world for $39.50, so those little design niggles are par for the course. But considering its name, I don’t think it’s too demanding to expect a bit more sizzle from this Roxy hobo.

Big Buddha Sunburst Hobo | Large Sueded Synthetic Carryall Bag

Posted on: Jul 4

Big Buddha Sunburst HoboBig Buddha helps you carry everything you could ever need or want on a day out with this large Sunburst hobo.

This oversized hobo gets its name from the golden metal accents which create a contemporary sunburst design at each side of the bag. These details help to punch up the fairly bland beige color. Nudes like this might be on trend right now, but that doesn’t make them any less boring. Although it’s not real leather, the sueded treatment makes the synthetic seem much richer than its affordable price tag.

Such a large bag can be difficult to manage, but Big Buddha has done its best to make that task easier. Inside you’ll find a pair of slide pockets and a large zippered one. And if that’s not enough, there’s also a complementary zip pocket on the bag’s back. The long flat handle is also adjustable so we can find just the right fit.

With so many bags shrinking these days, it’s refreshing to see the Sunburst bucking the trend. Its affordable $94.95 is just right for modern-day pack rats.

  • Zip top entry
  • Interior fabric lining
  • A single handle with an 8 inch drop

Upcycled Accessories from Super Earth Goods | Sustainable Trash to Treasure Handbags

Posted on: Jul 4

Super Earth Goods
Super Earth Goods is a green accessories company hailing from Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world. With all those people comes a whole lot of waste, a problem this sustainable label looks to reduce.

Super Earth Goods workers visit second-hand stores, markets, garages, and other local sites in search of discarded items needing a new lease on life. It upcycles these materials to create green handbags and footwear including laptop sleeves from rice sacks and men’s shirts, shopping bags made from used tire tubes, and drawstring duffels made from coffee sacks.

It might sound a bit icky to create accessories from trash, but the green materials are washed thoroughly before being hand-assembled by Indonesian families. This process results in items that are as fashionable and functional as they are eco-friendly. And as Super Earth Goods uses found objects, each accessory is a true original with tons of character.

Super Earth Goods accessories are available from selected stores in Indonesia, Singapore, and The Netherlands, as well as the label’s online store and the Bottica website. Pieces start at €25 for the label’s straw beach bag and top €175 for the Camo Bag made from a vintage army shirt with recycled truck tire tube straps.

Whiting & Davis Mesh & Lucite Elongated Clutch | Aqua Retro Metal Evening Purse

Posted on: Jul 4

Whiting & Davis Elongated ClutchWhiting & Davis puts a retro spin on its metal mesh purses with this Mesh & Lucite Elongated Clutch.

Often metal mesh has a classic, vintage vibe, but this one seems to take its inspiration from the swinging sixties. The aqua-colored brass mesh is much poppier than the traditional designs Whiting & Davis often produces, and its transparent Lucite ring gives the final modish touch.

At first glance the design of this elongated clutch looks like so many frame purses, but there’s a secret hiding inside. Four metal balls come together to form hidden kiss-lock clasps. They provide the extra security we crave without compromising the clutch’s clean good looks.

It’s a shame that there’s no shoulder strap hiding in there as well, but that’s only a minor disappointment. Metal mesh always feels wonderful in our hands, and when it’s used in such a slim design things are that much easier.

The lining is also a bit of a double-edged sword. Such a bright, white color makes it easy to find what you’re looking for, even under dim party lights. However it will attract lipstick stains and other marks, so don’t expect it to stay pristine for long!

At $200 this metal mesh clutch is a little expensive, but if you can manage to work it into your daytime wardrobe you should see value here.

  • Interior zip pocket
  • Measures 1.2 x 5 x 12.5 inches

Amalia Mattaor Dancing Bags | Unusual Futuristic Fish Leather Shoulder Bags

Amalia Mattaor Dancing Bag

French designer Amalia Mattaor has reinvented the shoulder bag with her clever nightclub ready Dancing Bags.

The unusual purses were designed with keen club hoppers in mind. They strap onto the shoulder, keeping your essentials safe without restricting your mobility on the dance floor. The futuristic, fierce designs are really like an extension of the body, and would look gorgeous paired with edgy nightclub attire.

The Dancing Bags are made from leather, but the skin is more eco-conscious than the average. Most skins come from edible fish, including salmon and eel, so there’s no waste of the animals. These materials are as soft and comfortable as their more traditional cowhide and lambskin counterparts, but they’re much more sustainable.

I love the look of these glamorous, rebellious bags but I can’t help worrying that they won’t do exactly what they say on the tin. I’m not sure what’s to stop many of them sliding down your arm when you’re really grooving. Perhaps you’d have to strap them on really tightly, but that doesn’t seem comfortable.

Amalia Mattaor’s Dancing Bags are available at Showroom Fabre in Paris, France, and The Nexus Townhouse and Showroom New York. I can’t find any prices online, which suggests to me that you’re bound to pay a pretty penny for these innovative accessories!

Rebagz Tattletale Tote | Eco-Friendly Recycled Paper & Plastic Breast Cancer Bag

Posted on: Jul 4

Rebagz Tattletale ToteWhy choose between paper or plastic? You can have both when you’re carrying this Tattletote tote from Rebagz.

The tote is made from recycled paper strips woven together to create a stylish wicker surface. Its finish features retro pink and red dots, or does it? While the pattern might seem innocent to the unaware, Rebagz cheekily calls it nipple print! Now that’s got you thinking of it in a whole new light, doesn’t it?

Rebagz isn’t merely being salacious here either. The label donates a portion of the profits from these bags to the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund. There are plenty of other patterns available if this one’s too scandalous for you, but these sadly won’t benefit the charity.

The flirty print is paired with transparent plastic handles. Honestly I think they look a bit cheap and nasty, but as they’re made from recycled PET I can at least respect them. They’re also long enough to easily sling over your shoulder, so carrying should be a breeze.

The open top design allows for easy access to your precious cargo, but it also compromises security. There are no internal pockets either, so we don’t have any space for keeping our items safe. That’s disappointing, but perhaps not unexpected in such a simple tote.

Does the Tattletale’s $90 price tag make you want to gossip about this Rebagz tote?

  • Dual handles with a 9 inch drop
  • Measures 4.5 x 10 x 15 inches

Graze Organic’s New Lunch Totes | Organic Cotton Label Makes Eco-Friendly Meal Bags

Posted on: Jul 3

Graze Organic Lunch TotesForget boring brown paper bags and carry your meals in style with the new lunch totes from Graze Organic.

The silk-screened front and back designs are what draw you in: there are pink flowers for the girly girls, robots for young boys and the men who’ve never grown up, and the Because Every Bag Matters print for eco-conscious eaters.

Each one is made in the United States from tough organic cotton and printed with water-based inks. The material is as easy to care for as it is green. If your drink bottle or container of leftovers leaks you can simply throw the tote in the washing machine. It’ll also withstand a trip through the tumble dryer when you’re done.

However it’s worth noting that these lunch totes are not lined, so any leaks may get messy. It makes sense as water-resistant materials like plastic aren’t generally environmentally friendly, but there may be occasions when we miss those properties.

The Graze Organic lunch totes measure 11.5 x 7.5 x 5 inches, so they’re large enough to hold waste-free food containers and reusable bottles, or even one of Graze Organic’s own cloth napkins.

The Graze Organic lunch totes are available for $29.95 from the Graze Organic website.

Ashley M Ostrich Embossed Satchel | Sophisticated Animal Synthetic Handbag

Posted on: Jul 3

Ashley M Ostrich Embossed SatchelWhen it comes to Ashley M, you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get. Sometimes it makes bags shaped like guitars and covered with images of pop culture icons, and on other occasions it forgets novelty and brings us something much more elegant like this Ostrich Embossed satchel.

This carry-all only costs $48, but its exotic animal embossing makes it appear much richer. Its body is made from a gentle apricot synthetic decorated in crocodile scales, while its flap and trim are made from a soft ostrich embossed gray leatherette. The combination of imitation skins might not appeal to purists, but I think the muted colors help Ashley M get away with it.

Ashley M takes its cues from classic vintage fashion, and the satchel is better for it. Its golden hardware closure is elegant, as is its structured shape.

Considering its affordable price, I’m impressed by the attention to detail. Its interior zip pocket is trimmed in more of that ostrich embossed synthetic, and there are golden metal feet on the base to protect it from scuffs and scrapes. The handle could stand to be a little longer, but it feels cruel to pick apart such an affordable purse when Ashley M has already given us so much.

This embossed satchel is a great option for recessionistas who crave luxury good looks.

Alexander McQueen Wicca Calf Hair Clutch | Sleek Structured Black Evening Bag

Posted on: Jul 3

Alexander McQueen Wicca Calf Hair ClutchAlexander McQueen is one of the most iconic designers of this century. His recent death is a tragedy of international proportions. But lucky for the fashion world, his designs live on. This Wicca clutch shows what McQueen did best; combine high brow and edginess in a sophisticated and beautiful way.

I’m not always a giant fan of calf hair. If it isn’t done well, it can look really cheap. Well, the way the Wicca has used the material, it looks anything but cheap. The luxurious texture of the calf hair lends this cleanly designed clutch an air of subtle edginess.

The antiqued brass clasp is the only real embellishment on the Wicca, and its quirky shield shape stands out against the rich black backdrop. McQueen has added a very practical hand strap to this classic style, which makes it a comfortable and elegant choice to complement your evening wear ensembles.

At $1,595 the Wicca is definitely expensive, but let’s be honest, his accessories are immediate collector’s items.

Collina Strada Reinvents Bags for KAIGHT | Organic Designer Goes Vegan

Posted on: Jul 3

Collina Strada Kaight Bags

Eco-friendly accessories label Collina Strada has created a trio of sustainable biker-chic bags exclusively for New York City’s KAIGHT.

The edgy handbags are made in the City that Never Sleeps from recycled canvas and faux leather colored with eco-friendly inks. Fans of Collina Strada would be familiar with the Cartella, Moto, and Sierra designs. However the vegan material used here should please animal loving girls who shun the label’s usual organic leather.

One of those women is a KAIGHT’s sales associates who loved Collina Strada’s designs but felt frustrated they were made of real vegetable-tanned leather. Like many animal activists she did not use or wear genuine leather products, and could not indulge in the designs while remaining true to her principles.

It really brought home the fact that many who choose not to wear leather aren’t able to purchase or wear many of the trendier, fun designers and have to opt for only vegan labels,” explained KAIGHT’s proprietor Kate McGregor.

The vegan Collina Strada purses are available from KAIGHT’s stores, including its website, now. With prices starting at $265 they’re on the high side, but knowing that 10% of the proceeds will benefit Brooklyn’s BARC Animal Shelter should make it a bit easier to part with your cash.
