Delicately woven strips of bamboo create a striking geometric design on this box purse. I love the way Serpui Marie has mixed the natural beige fibre with summery blues. Many labels weave natural fibers to create warm weather purses, but I can’t recall a fashion house working this humble material with such artistry and flair. Needless to say, I’m impressed!

Like so many box clutches, we probably can’t call the Bruna practical. It’s too small to fit much of anything inside, and its structured design prohibits overstuffing. But its zippered pocket is much more useful than the tiny slips we typically see, and that counts for something. A chain strap would have been convenient, but something tells me the Bruna wouldn’t have looked quite as stylish with this attachment. And such a petite purse should be easy enough to carry the old fashioned way!

Considering its elaborate finish, I expected Serpui Marie would charge a pretty penny for this purse. However it’s kept the price down to an affordable $249. That’s still a bit pricy for a summer purse, but if you can work it into your winter wardrobe you’re sure to see value.

The latest ad in the fashion house’s ongoing campaign features triple working heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, his adorable grandson, and a monogrammed Louis Vuitton carryall.

Annie Leibowitz was back behind the lens to capture the very natural image of Ali watching his grandson play at his family home in Phoenix, Arizona. Could there be another boxing champion in the family? If the tiny gloves he’s wearing are any indication, this tiny tot is shaping up to follow in his famous grandfather’s footsteps!

But let’s remember that Ali isn’t just a boxer. Since his retirement in 1981 he’s remained in the public eye as a humanitarian and political campaigner. It’s these endeavors that compelled Louis Vuitton chairman Yves Carcelle to cast Ali in the new Core Values campaign.

Muhammad Ali is the epitome of an outstanding personality – a true living legend in boxing and far beyond,” he explained. “We are honoured that he agreed to be photographed for the Core Values campaign, and delighted with the way this beautiful portrait of the champion and his grandson captures the idea of transmission, which is of great significance to Louis Vuitton.

Sherpani Lucky Wallet | Large Purple Eco-Nylon Purse

Sherpani Lucky WalletIt’s smaller than the label’s day bags, but Sherpani shows it still likes to live large with this Lucky Wallet.

This wallet is so large that I thought it might be a clutch purse. It probably could serve as such if it weren’t so narrow, or so plain. But as it stands it’s a cute, if not very chic, wallet.

It is greener than many wallets on the market. Sherpani’s made its durable nylon material with 67% recycled fabrics. Critics might suggest the label could have upped the percentage, but any steps towards sustainability should be celebrated. The fabric is colored with a bold purple dye and embroidered with Sherpani’s famous flower.

I must admit, considering the Lucky’s size I expected a bit more. This wallet ticks all the boxes but it doesn’t go as far as it might. There’s a change pocket and plenty of room for paper money and checks. But there are just five card slots. Show me a woman with just five cards and I’ll show you someone that lives a very cloistered life!

The Lucky doesn’t quite meet my expectations, but it’s cheap enough to forgive its flaws. At $22.95 it’s as cheap as it is cheerful.

Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2012 AdAnother day brings us another advertising campaign. This time we’re looking at Louis Vuitton’s offering for the fall winter 2012 season.

The Louis Vuitton commercial couldn’t be more different from the Giorgio Armani one we admired yesterday. While Giorgio Armani favored a monochromatic color scheme, Louis Vuitton’s is rich and warm with burnt yellow, browns, and other earthy hues. Giorgio Armani forced us to look at the fashions by wiping out the background and making the images very clean. In contrast, Louis Vuitton’s commercial is cluttered that I barely know where to look!

The new season collection seems to have a real retro feel, with structured leopard print satchels and tailored coats and dresses. I just don’t know what to make of those quirky hats, do you? I love to don a hat when the weather cools, but these are just a little avant-garde for me. Do you think Louis Vuitton intends them to sell, or are they simply there to get us talking?

Louis Vuitton clearly figures that if it ain’t broke, you shouldn’t fix it. The fashion house has long favored such busy commercials, and its reinstated Steven Meisel as it’s man behind the lens. Do you think these ads are starting to look a bit tired, or do they still excite you?

The glossy patent teal finish really makes this tote. Without that luxurious finish and vivid color, this traditionally styled tote might appear ordinary. And goodness knows no bag from the Salvatore Ferragamo stable could ever be that! But these elements help the Bice turn heads.

The aqua is one of four colors Salvatore Ferragamo offers. There’s also a magenta tote for the girly girls, and a patent black leather one for the traditionalists. If that polished finish is a little too glitzy for your taste, you can also enjoy the purse in a matte caramel hue. I think this simple style needs a bit more luster to elevate it, but it’s a matter of personal taste.

A sunken zip works with the visible tab closure for double security. After that promising start though, the Bice begins to falter. It’s a roomy bag, but it has just a single zippered pocket to keep items in order. That’s really not enough to keep control of such a generously sized space. The straps are also a lot skinnier than I’d like. As they’re made from leather I’m sure they’ll hold the tote’s weight, but they’ll likely dig into your shoulder when the Bice is full.

I might have been tempted if the Bice were cheaper, but $850 is too much to spend on such a simple tote, no matter what its designer pedigree.

We could never call it sophisticated, but the Shadow View has a playful pattern that’s sure to appeal to budding fashionistas. Its obvious branding is a bit out of step with the modern world, but I love the way the cacophony of colors and prints explodes over the white polyester fabric. This material isn’t very luxurious, but it’s a smart sturdy option for a bag of this ilk.

The Shadow View’s design is well thought out, with plenty of interior and exterior pockets. I particularly like the mesh ones at the side, which provide easy access for snacks, tissues, and lip gloss. They don’t look very secure, but they’re so deep that whatever you stash inside should stay in place.

A bag like the Shadow View probably won’t be part of your wardrobe once you graduate, so I’m glad to see it costs just $42. For that price, you can afford it, your textbooks, and school supplies!

Giorgio Armani has gone back to basics with its fall winter 2012 advertising campaign.

Famed photographic duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott have snapped models Aymeline Valade and Simon Nessman for the commercials. The black and white images are stark and without distracting backgrounds, so we’re forced to focus on the clothes and apparel. It’s a clever technique which bucks current trends, but it makes a lot of sense for a fashion house. A company like Giorgio Armani isn’t selling models or exotic locations after all!

While the strategy makes sense, it’d fall apart if the collection wasn’t so strong. Thankfully Giorgio Armani has outdone itself this season, with elegant tailored apparel and classic accessories. I’m particularly smitten with that oversized clutch purse and the felt hat. What piece do you have your eye on?

Giorgio Armani’s fall winter advertising isn’t just unique in the fashion landscape. It also shows a real departure for the brand. In previous campaigns it’s favored saturated hues and a vibrant palette, so this monochromatic approach is something very different. However if you’re going to go grayscale, the fall winter season is probably the best time to do it!

Sara Berman Kattiya Hobo | Pom-Pom Decorated Brown Leather Carry-All

Sara Berman Kattiya HoboSara Berman brings a dose of whimsy to the classic hobo style with the Kattiya.

The Kattiya’s relaxed silhouette is a hobo trademark, and the chocolate colored leather brings a familiar dose of bohemia to the design. But Sara Berman takes this classic base and plays around a little. The decorative zips make the design feel much more modern than any hippie throwback. The pom-poms are another interesting touch. These whimsical motifs aren’t really my cup of tea, so I was glad to see they’re removable. Without them the Kattiya doesn’t have quite as much personality, but it looks a lot cleaner and more grown-up.

A hobo’s slouchy shape makes it notoriously impractical, but Sara Berman’s done what she can to combat this inherent flaw. The Kattiya’s spacious main compartment is kitted out with leather trimmed pockets, ready and waiting to hold the items you need most. The interior is also lined with bright leopard print cotton, which makes it easy to see what you’re carrying.

At $555 the Kattiya can’t be called a bargain, but it’s also not exorbitant for a well-made leather purse that’s destined to become a regular part of your everyday wardrobe.

The rumors are true: Maison Martin Margiela will release a capsule collection through H&M stores.

Maison Martin Margiela and H&M were both reluctant to comment on the rumor when approached by the press a few days ago, but it seems they were just waiting to make the announcement in their own sweet time. Perhaps they just needed the extra time to finish the promotional video above!

There promises to be something for everyone in the new range, with apparel items and accessories for men and women. But details about what those pieces will look like, and what we’ll pay for them, are a bit thin on the ground.

Maison Martin Margiela and H&M seem like unlikely bedfellows, but a representative for the fashion house says their shared love of democracy unites them.

The democracy of our fashion has always been at the centre of our creativity, and the collaboration with H&M allows us to push this instinct further,” the rep said. “We will bring together the contrasting universes of the two houses in ways that will surprise all.

The Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collection will hit H&M stores around the globe, including the Swedish retailer’s website, on November 15. Hopefully the American e-commerce site will be up and running by then to save us joining the queues! Are you keen for a piece of this collaborative line?

Roberto Cavalli Maxi Clutch | Cut-Out Metallic Leather & Satin Purse

Roberto Cavalli Maxi ClutchRoberto Cavalli’s avant garde approach to fashion has always been a bit hit and miss for me. But it’s struck gold with this Maxi Clutch.

At its heart, the Maxi is a rainbow colored satin clutch. That would have been pretty, but ultimately forgettable. So Roberto Cavalli adds a breathtaking layer of golden leather for some extra punch. The leather’s cut out to make the shapes of menacing wild animals and delicate netting. Those eagles and tigers could have seemed kitschy under the wrong designer’s hands, but Roberto Cavalli somehow makes all the details work in harmony. I’m impressed.

The Maxi is longer than your average box clutch, but it’s still not what I would call maxi-sized. Perhaps that’s a good thing though, because without a chain clutch it could have become unmanageable if it were supersized. The zippered internal pocket means there’s no need for a wallet, so it should hold everything we really need.

The Maxi is a very elaborate, very original clutch purse, but even that can’t sway me to part with $2210 to own it. You’ll need a very crowded social calendar to justify spending that kind of cash.
