Amy Butler offers us an impressive 11 prints, but I think this cotton vine navy one is my favorite. Given its name I guess those pale yellow shapes are heads of cotton, but they’re so abstract that they could easily be mistaken for flowers. Whatever they are, I love the way they pop against the navy blue background.

Whichever pattern you pick, you’ll appreciate the Mallory’s soft organic cotton body. It doesn’t just feel good to touch; it’s also good for the environment, so carrying it should make you feel even better!

The attention to detail is impressive for such a small purse. I really like the fabric covered frame, reinforced piping, and pretty floral cotton lined interior. Coin purses are so tiny that there’s not really a lot of space to add extras, but Amy Butler’s worked hard to offer value here.

And well she should, because at $36 this is definitely on the high side. Personally I think this is a case of paying a premium for sustainable materials, which is disappointing. However it’s so cute that I’m finding the price gouging a little easier to forgive!

Italian-born television personality and actress Giuliana Rancic is preparing to add fashion designer to her already extensive resume with the launch of her clothing and accessories line for HSN.

Rancic says her collection will feature up to twelve pieces, including three handbags and a deconstructed leatherette jacket. By using faux leather rather than the real thing, she’s been able to keep the pieces priced at around $50 each.

Those prices are quite attractive to the average shopper on a budget, but I wonder whether they’ll be as appealing to Guiliana Rancic’s dream client, Gwyneth Paltrow. The Oscar winning actress is renowned for her love of luxury labels, but Rancic says that her “great style that’s not fussy” is right in keeping with her HSN accessories and apparel.

Celebrity designed fashion lines are a dime a dozen these days, but I’m feeling more positively about Ranic’s collection than most. After all, her father Eduardo DePandi is a master tailor and the owner of high-end menswear store Bruno Cipriani in North Bethseda, Maryland. Surely some of his fashion flair has rubbed off on his famous daughter!

After seeing so many stylish but relatively staid accessories from Juicy Couture, it’s refreshing to see the label hasn’t forgotten its sense of fun. This Sequin Stripe $ Pieces purse is classic Juicy, with its whimsical style and injection of bling.

This wristlet is made from Juicy Couture’s favorite fabric: velour. This soft red material is paired with stripes of black sequins. The color combination is bold and striking, with just the right amount of bling. Of course though, Juicy Couture rarely stops until it’s gone over the top. The sequin covered heart accent takes things over the edge, but delightfully so.

Small purses like this are never packed with features, but the selection of card slots makes this one more practical than most. With your cards taken care of you won’t need a wallet, so you can use that interior for storing a tiny coin pouch, a favorite tube of gloss, your cell phone, and your keys. That’s the barest of basics, but what else do you need on an evening out?

For $78 we’re not getting a lot of bag for our dollar, but we are getting a lot of personality.

Fledgling company Audrey & Emma look to solve a handbag problem I wasn’t even aware of with their new handbag liners and bases. These innovative products help Louis Vuitton and Longchamp lovers eliminate the dreaded “bag sag.”

Company founder Elissa West explains that bag sag is the dumpy appearance of a well designed, but poorly packed, purse. The bases and liners also work double duty, protecting handbags from spills and everyday wear. Their design helps luxury purses look better on the street, and stay in better condition for longer.

The range is a bit narrow though; at this point the protectors are only available for the Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 and Longchamp Le Pliage 10 and 12 purses. Hopefully we’ll see more styles added as the company grows.
The Audrey & Emma bases and liners are made in the United States from recycled milk jugs. To further up their eco-credentials, they’re also packed and shipped in recycled paper.

The company is also socially responsible. A portion of each sale benefits The Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund, an organization which funds programs for needy children around the globe.

I’ve always found Fossil’s contemporary collections a bit hit and miss, so I’m thrilled that it’s gone back into the vault and reinvented many of its classic designs with its Vintage Re-Issue range. Bags like this Turnlock Cross-Body are the reason why I’m so enamored with this line.

Turnlock closures have come back into favor in recent years, so this cross-body appears vintage and modern all at the same time. This purse’s simplicity helps root it in the past though. It comes from a time when we didn’t need too many details to distract us. All it took was a good quality leather in a simple color, some elegant piping, and a few sexy curves.

This cross-body harkens back to a time when bags had a job to do, and this one does it well. It’s probably on the small side for modern misses, but I think it’s big enough to handle everything you really need. The long cross-body strap has a canvas underside which will make it feel even more comfortable on your shoulder.

Considering its petite stature the number of pockets makes us feel really pampered. A zip pocket and pair of open slips is standard for a large day bag, but virtually unheard of in something this small. And there’s even another open pocket hidden underneath the flap!

This Fossil Vintage Re-Issue Turnlock Cross-Body screams modern classic. Not bad for a purse costing just $128!

If nothing else, Ed Hardy knows how to create a handbag that stands out. It nails that brief again with this Quiana carry on bag.

Travel bags are often quite bland, so I appreciate Ed Hardy for providing a point of difference. But I’m not altogether sold on the design. The skull printed cotton is very Ed Hardy, and frankly quite tacky. The signature printed insert complements those skulls well, but it also looks pretty cheap. It’s horses for courses though. The Quiana is a very Ed Hardy bag, and it’s meant to appeal to the tastes of its already established fan base rather than impress newcomers.

There are some really nice things about this bag on a practical level though. Cotton is an inspired choice, as it’s strong but lightweight, just the thing we need in these days of excess baggage charges. I also appreciate the choice of straps; we can use the short handles or attach the longer strap for making our way through a crowded airport. The interior is also spacious if a bit narrow. But remember, the Quiana is designed as a carry on bag, something to complement a suitcase rather than serve as your sole travel accessory.

Given its cheap materials, even cheaper looks, and occasional usage I think Ed Hardy has a hide to charge $248 for this carry on bag. If you’re an Ed Hardy fanatic you might see value, but despite its few redeeming features I think I’ll pass.

Anne Salvatore Epstein combines New York City style with her new sustainable outlook on life with her eco-friendly fashion label, Beau Soleil.

The Big Apple based designer found her priorities shifting when she became pregnant with her first child in 2005. And so she traded in her “overly excessive” existence for a much simpler one. She suddenly she found herself frequenting farmers’ markets, living in a green building in mid-town Manhattan, and making more conscious and eco-friendly choices in her life.

This ethos led her to create her fashion line, which she named after her favorite oyster. It features handbags and apparel items made from sustainable materials including bamboo, vegetable-colored cottons, tencel, and recycled leather.

The line isn’t simply a case of an eco-enthusiast wanting to spread her message. Anna Salvatore Epstein has some serious design cred after working with Marc Jacobs and IISLI.

Each Beau Soleil bag bears the words “Reduce, Recycle, Renew,” so they’re a handy way to spread the green word without even saying a thing. I’m particularly fond of the pale blue Beau Wash bag pictured, which is made from soft organic denim, but there are plenty of other purses to choose from including more large day bags, a clutch, and cosmetics cases.

Cole Haan delivers all of the polish of a snakeskin handbag without the four-figure price tag with this Kendra tote.

All too often exotic embossing can go awry, creating a finish which is far less luxurious than it should look. Thankfully that’s not the case here. Cole Haan has cleverly used earthy neutrals to create its snake scales. The edges are smoky and smudged rather than crisp, creating an impressive authentic look.

Personally I think the Kendra needs that snakeskin finish to ensure its fairly simple shape doesn’t look too pedestrian. However if you prefer something more classic you’ll also find the Kendra in matte Woodbury brown.

The Kendra is as practical as it is poised, with a selection of straps and plenty of interior pockets. It’s large but not extravagantly so. You should be able to fit everything you really need inside without being tempted to tote too many extras. The only thing I’m longing for are metal feet to protect that lush leather base. It’s disappointing to e without them, but they’re not something we’d necessarily expect at this affordable price point.

At $378 the Kendra is very reasonably priced, particularly considering its exotic good looks.

If the opulent purses from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row line were too rich for your blood, you’re in luck. The stylish sisters are adding handbags to their more affordable Elizabeth and James collection.

Neiman Marcus announced the good news with the tweet “Full @ElizandJames report coming up. Here’s a scoop: they’re launching handbags next year!”

So now we’re all left to speculate, although with Elizabeth and James acting as a mid-priced alternative to The Row we likely won’t see any black alligator backpacks with exorbitant $39, 000 price tags in the bunch.

It’s expected that the Elizabeth and James purses will be priced much more affordably at around the $400 to $500 mark. That’s still not small change, but it’s competitive amongst the luxury labels. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are never going to serve up synthetic purses after all, so we’re going to pay for quality.

It’s also predicted that the brand new bags will hit stores, such as Neiman Marcus and other high-end retail outlets, by the end of the year. No doubt we’ll hear more about them in the coming months to create a bit of pre-Christmas buzz. Do you think the twins’ latest handbags will make your wish list this year?
