Julianne Moore has posed for conservative American fashion retailer Talbots’ fall advertising campaign. The flame-haired actress looks at ease in these commercials, and well she should as it’s her second season fronting them.

The commercials certainly aren’t revolutionary, but I think they sell the brand well. Moore might be dressed conventionally in her brown suit, hat, and shoulder bag, but she’s looking wonderful for her 50 years.

Michael Smaldone, the chief executive officer for Talbots, said Moore was a natural choice for the advertisements as “she’s a classic beauty who is an extraordinary actress, mother, author and a true modern woman.” It’s high praise indeed, but I think it’s deserved.

The last time we saw Julianne Moore fronting a fashion campaign she was getting her kit off for Bulgari. She looked youthful beyond her years, but I think I prefer the Talbots ads. They might not be as racy, or feature products as luxurious, but they’re much more approachable. Moore looks like the kind of woman you’d want to be friends with, and that’s really attractive.

That’s a real blessing, as a pink cheetah printed purse could so easily have appeared gaudy. If it’s too feminine for you don’t worry; this bag’s also available in plain black and a few checked variations.

It needn’t be a gym bag, but the Alegra’s spacious interior and selection of secure pockets is up to that task. It’d also work well as a book bag, a library tote, a diaper bag, or any other kind of casual accessory! Not bad for a purse costing just $20!

Lanvin has been making serious waves the past few seasons. It almost seems like it can do no wrong on the fashion front. The accessories line is the perfect balance of classic and cutting edge, and the Trousee is the perfect example of its aesthetic.

The combination of textures on the Trousee makes it instantly appealing. The smoothness of the black leather has a subtle quilted pattern that is topped with the rougher, but still sleek, grosgrain. The light brown leather on the straps and zipper pull acts as lighthearted punctuation.

The Trousee’s shape is totally subdued. It’s a rounded pouch with not many design quirks, which allows the cool materials to shine through. The chain mail strap is a major asset. It takes the chain strap trend and gives it a more artistic look. Honestly, a lot of the details on the Trousee seem like they might pair oddly, but it hangs together beautifully.

Too bad that the $1,090 price tag will prevent most of us from having a Trousee of our own.

Accessorize serves up classic style with a dash of whimsy with this Edie Double Bow Wallet.

Its name might not be so imaginative, but at least this is a purse that delivers just what we expect. It has a simple wallet shape, but it’s livened up by the playful teal color and flirty double bow. Often Accessorize’s use of synthetic feels like a real compromise, but I’m not so critical here. Its pebbled finish does a great job at imitating leather, and its stiffer feel gives the bows an appealing structure.

The bows make the Edie feel very retro retro, but inside it’s a thoroughly modern creature. It’s large array of card slots should please even the most seasoned shopaholic, while the separate coin and note compartments should help even the most scatterbrained one stay organized. It’s a shame we have to turn the wallet about to access the cards and coins, but that’s the nature of the beast. Just make sure you zip up the coin compartment to make sure your shrapnel doesn’t go astray!

Judith Leiber has promoted its design consultant Jana Matheson to creative director as part of the company’s brand expansion.

Matheson will now oversee all aspects of design, including the look of the company’s famous handbags and its marketing and branding. Matheson says she hopes to give Judith Leiber a more youthful, modern feel while staying true to its impressive heritage.

We can apparently look forward to some more contemporary accents, including opaque “chalk” crystals and semi-precious stones. The label also plans to introduce more versatile accessories including large python purses, which should serve girls during the day and night.

Matheson will work underneath Lela Katsune, who took the newly created role of executive vice president last year. These key business appointments complete the two-year expansion driven by brand president Mary Gleason, who joined Judith Leiber in 2009.

It sounds like these changes will help Judith Leiber capture a larger audience. Its evening purses are always expensive, but if we can get some use from them during the day we might be more willing to part with our cash. And we can only hope that the use of more diverse, and more affordable, gemstones will make some of the Judith Leiber purses more affordable too. Are you excited about the changes afoot?

Exotic embossed leather is a tricky thing to pull off. Do it right and you can create a skin which looks a million bucks, but costs a lot less. But put a foot wrong and you’ll end up with a leather than looks far cheaper than an un-embossed skin would. Thankfully we can always rely on Abas to create impressive exotic mimics, and it does it again with the Dylan.

The Dylan is a small purse, but its vibrant red color and crocodile scaled surface ensures it packs quite a punch. The finish makes what would otherwise be a relatively pedestrian purse really eye-catching.

The Dylan is petite but it’s still practical thanks to the multitude of organizational pockets. You’ll note the zip and flap ones on the front, and there are even more hidden away inside. The strap is long for easy cross-body wear, and also adjustable for the most comfortable fit. Alternatively you can simply unclip it and use the Dylan like a clutch.

I’d ordinarily suggest $140 is too much for a bag this small, but its high quality materials and versatility make me think differently. After all, it’s a lot cheaper than a real crocodile purse!

Gucci is embracing the digital age with the launch of its latest iPad and iPhone app, Gucci Style by Gucci. The app feels like a glossy lifestyle magazine with its focus on strong, well written editorial content in the areas of fashion and culture.

It’s not just a whole lot of reading though. Gucci has harnessed the full capabilities of these apps to create a completely interactive experience. You can view clothes and accessories from all angles with the 360-degree feature, and watch Gucci’s artisans create the label’s famous Bamboo bag and horsebit loafers.

There’s also a mini travel guide which takes viewers from Milan to Rome to Portofino, with tips on essential luggage items and where to eat and sleep along the way. I’m predicting the Gucci Style by Gucci app could be a wonderful waste of time, in the best possible way. It’s available at the Apple App Store in eight different languages.

It’s got a funny name, but the Mun Ruffle Hobo from 7 Chi is actually one of the affordable label’s most grown up purses.

The use of real leather rather than 7 Chi’s favored synthetic helps to make this hobo appear more luxurious than many of its stablemates. It hasn’t lost its sense of fun though. The leather is cut into square strips which create a sort of ruffled fringe effect. It’s a very modern take on boho fashion which is sure to appeal to the budding Sienna Millers out there.

7 Chi allows that finish to take center stage; it’s the focus of an otherwise simple hobo. Its full crescent shape is classic hobo, and the black color timeless. Personally I’d choose this over the reddish purple, as it’s less likely to date, but bolder fashionistas may like that pop of color.

It looks a bit frivolous but the Mun Ruffle is well designed, with a selection of convenient carry straps and a plethora of pockets. These ensure the enormous interior never feels too big, although you may need to have regular clean outs to keep it free of clutter. This is the kind of bag that seems to attract receipts and old papers unless you take care with it.

Its $176 price tag should tell you that this hobo isn’t made from the best quality leather. Customers have reported that it’s a bit stiff, and if it’s not packed carefully in your closet those ruffles could start to sit awkwardly. However treat it with care and it’s likely to last longer than your average 7 Chi purse.
