Tianni Canvas Print Tote | Patchwork Patterned Pocket Teal Handbag

Posted on: Jun 18

Tianni Canvas Print ToteI’m not quite sure what Tianni was thinking when creating its Canvas Print Tote. Are you?

This tote has some nice elements, but none of them seem to work together. I was instantly drawn to its saturated teal hue, but the colored canvas isn’t well supported. The tan piping’s not so bad, but the complementary sections near the straps seem tacked on. So does the unexpected patchwork printed flap on the front pocket. And with the oversized zipper pull hanging down from the pocket above, the design feels messy and thrown together. It’s not an assault on the senses, but it’s also not very cohesive.

It’s not a badly designed bag for the money though. We’ve got all the space we could want for, and enough pockets to make it feel manageable. The sweet pastel printing lining adds to the fun.

If you’re on a budget, this Canvas Printed Tote might have all you’re looking for. It’s hard to find any bag of real quality for $56 after all. But we’ve seen Tianni create better than this.

Launer’s Olympic Lydia Bags | New Metallic Purses for London Games

Posted on: Jun 18

Launer Olympic LydiaLauner is getting into the Olympic spirit with a capsule collection of three handbags inspired by the games’ medals.

Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite handbag brand is usually quite staid, but the label shows its flashier side with these metallic patent calf leather Lydia purses. As you might expect, the trio features a gold, a silver, and a bronze handbag. The Lydia has been one of Launer’s flagship designs since its introduction 18 years ago, so it was probably time for a bold makeover!

The Queen might be a Launer lover, but I’m not sure whether she’ll warm to its new limited edition purses. She usually carries the conservative Diva and Traviata styles in black after all. She carried a Lydia to William and Kate’s wedding last year, but in white it was still much tamer than these new bags. Do you think the Queen might indulge in one of these flashy Launer creations for London’s Olympic Games?

Launer is such an intrinsically British brand (from its manufacturing plant in Birmingham to its relationship with the Queen and its long-standing customers), so it was only right with all eyes on the country this year, that Launer be part of that in a big way,” a Launer spokesperson told The Daily Mail.

Launer’s trio of medal inspired Lydia purses will hit its website on July 27, which is not so coincidentally the same day as London’s Olympic Games opening ceremony. Gold, silver, or bronze; it makes no difference to the price. Each one will cost ₤665.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Burg Boxer Medium Leather Tote | Super Cool Cherry Red Convertible Carryall

Posted on: Jun 18

Marc By Marc Jacobs Burg Boxer Medium Leather ToteHistorically, the Marc by Marc Jacobs line has been a combination of high fashion and classic Americana. This Burg Boxer keeps true to the line’s roots with its cutting edge convertibility and traditional feminine charm.

The cherry red leather on the Burg is a real standout. Literally, it will put a needed pop of color in your wardrobe. But it’s also kind of sedate and laid back. Fashion, thankfully, seems to be moving away from ultra-brights and into more reasonable (and wearable) territory. The leather is butter soft, but still durable, which makes it the perfect storm of handbag materials. I love the total lack of ornamentation that keeps the surface clean and minimal.

The shape of the Burg is what really makes the bag unique. It starts out as a sort of petite satchel, but the sides unzip to create a large, but still manageably-sized tote. It’s the best of both worlds, and very well designed in both incarnations. There’s a removable shoulder strap that keeps it carryable.

For $460 you basically get two handbags in one, and both of them are super cool. Kudos, Marc Jacobs.

  • 17″ x 9″ x 6″ size
  • Interior zippered pocket

Stuart Weitzman Hoops Clutch | Bold Art Deco Canvas Purse

Posted on: Jun 18

Stuart Weitzman Hoops ClutchAdd some pop to any neutral ensemble with this bold Hoops clutch from Stuart Weitzman.

The Hoops’ striking print really makes this purse. It’s bold lines give it an art deco feel, but its saturated colors ensure it’s still fresh. I’ve fallen for this green color scheme, but it’s also available in classic red and brown palettes. Which one’s your favorite?

By choosing canvas over a more opulent skin, Stuart Weitzman gives the Hoops a relaxed daytime appeal. It could probably stretch to dinner and a movie once the sun sets, but it’s not dressed up enough to pass at a black tie do. That’s not a criticism though. With so many fussy, frilly clutch purses flooding the market, it’s refreshing to find something more relaxed.

The Hoops daytime design is backed up with convenient features. We can carry it as a traditional clutch, or utilize the wrist loop or shoulder strap. Its zippered interior pocket is another handy touch, an upgrade from those useless patch pockets we typically find nestled inside clutch purses.

Honestly the Hoops probably costs too much at $398. That’s really expensive for a clutch made predominantly from canvas. But it’s got such a distinct look and versatile design that I’m still tempted to splurge!

More Features of This Stuart Weitzman Art Deco Clutch

  • Magnetic snap flap closure
  • Fully lined interior
  • A single strap with a 22.5 inch drop
  • Measures 12 x 2.25 x 6.5 inches

Independent Handbag Designer Awards Winners Named | Fiona Kempton & Arbol de Vienta Take Top Prizes

Posted on: Jun 17

Kempton Wiltshire BagKempton & Co. and Arbol de Vienta took out top honors at Handbag Designer 101’s sixth annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards.

Kempton & Co.’s Wiltshire purse, pictured, was named the Best Green Handbag at the New York awards ceremony. Company founder Fiona Kempton crafts the handbag entirely from reclaimed materials including old flour sacks and hardware sourced from thrift store purses. Kempton was lucky to take out the prize, as she only learned of the competition a few days prior to its submission deadline. Her win will see her collaborating with Timberland & Amorim Cork Composites on a sustainable bag. The finished product will be available for purchase through Timberland stores across the country later this year.

Arbol de Viento took out the prize for the Most Socially Responsible Handbag for its fair trade purses crafted by indigenous artisans in Mexico. These women keep the native craft of palm weaving alive through their work for Arbol de Viento, and earn a fair wage for their efforts.

Jennifer Lang proved to be the people’s choice. Her lacy Luba mini tote won the Audience Fan Favorite title. Savannah College of Art and Design’s Krystal Sokolis showed she’s one to watch when the hand-woven leather bag from her Ophilya label was named Best Student Made Handbag. Harper Jairdan’s Lady Knight purse took home the title of Single Simplicity Best Handmade Handbag, while Aimee Kestenberg’s Aimee Convertible Shopper was named Best Kipling-Inspired Handbag.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Straw Studios Talia Tote | Nautical Canvas Carry Bag with Rope Handles

Posted on: Jun 17

Straw Studios Talia ToteStraw Studios trades in its usual straw for canvas with this Talia Tote.

I’m personally glad Straw Studios stepped out of its usual box. The canvas fabric is every bit as summery as the natural fibers Straw Studios usually works with, but it’s much stronger. While woven straw bags inevitably break after a few season’s exposure to the salty sea air, this tote should survive several summers.

The Talia’s not the most stylish tote on the market, but I really like the way the bold fuchsia base and accents pop against its naturally toned canvas body. The soft rope handles give the tote a relaxed, nautical vibe.

The Talia is enormous, so I can’t imagine it becoming part of your everyday wardrobe. However you’ll be thankful for that extra space when you’re hitting the beach or farmers markets. The side pockets go some way towards keeping smaller items organized, but it’s really made for carrying bulky goods like fluffy towels or fresh produce.

If it were more expensive I’d hesitate to indulge in the Talia. It’s too big for regular use, and too season specific for splurging. But this baby costs just $69. At that price you’ll quickly get your money’s worth.

More Features of This Straw Studios Canvas Tote

  • Snap closure
  • Dual handles with a 5.5 inch drop
  • Measures 6 x 22 x 15 inches

Warner Brothers Wins Louis Vuitton Copyright Case | The Hangover: Part II Triumphs in Court

Posted on: Jun 17

Hangover 2 Marquee

Louis Vuitton has lost its lawsuit against the Warner Brothers movie studio.

The fashion house hoped to claim damages from the film company, who used a replica LV bag in its 2011 buddy comedy The Hangover: Part II. But Judge Andrew Carter found that Warner Brothers should not be held liable.

The judge said most filmgoers would have barely noticed that the bag, which enjoyed less than 30 seconds of screen time, was a fake. He added that most viewers would also assume Louis Vuitton gave consent for the bag’s usage.

The likelihood of confusion is at best minimal,” he said.

That might be true, but it’s an interesting line to take considering the publicity surrounding this case. After all, now we all know Louis Vuitton gave no such consent. But should Louis Vuitton be awarded damages simply because it’s drawn attention to something the courts believe should have been a non-issue?

Louis Vuitton’s legal team have declined to comment on the case, but no doubt they’re not impressed that they miss out on some of the $580 million The Hangover: Part II’s taken.

It’s unusual to see Louis Vuitton losing out in a copyright case. Do you agree with Judge Carter’s ruling?

Stone Mountain Garden Party Tote | Affordable Floral Carry-All Bag

Posted on: Jun 17

Stone Mountain Garden Party ToteStone Mountain calls this tote bag a Garden Party, but sadly it doesn’t make me feel like celebrating.

That might be a harsh synopsis, but I can’t recall Stone Mountain creating a bag that looks quite so dated before. Its floral print might be seasonal, but it feels very tired. I’m sure my grandmother has scatter cushions made from the same fabric. Had the tan trim been made of leather it might have dressed up the tote, but the vinyl accents here seem very thin and cheap.

We’re told never to judge a book by its cover, but I can’t imagine many modern girls getting past the Garden Party’s unfashionable exterior. If you don’t care for trends you’ll be rewarded though with a spacious and well-designed tote bag. Its side pockets are perfect for stashing the items you need on hand, and there are plenty more inside. There’s also a convenient keyclip on a long leash, so you won’t spend time scrounging for your house or car keys!

The Garden Party is also very affordable at $99. But price and practicality count for little if you don’t have the looks to back it up. We’ve seen better from Stone Mountain.

More Features of This Stone Mountain Floral Tote

  • Zip top closure
  • Silver-toned hardware
  • Dual shoulder straps with a 10.25 inch drop
  • Measures 3.8 x 12.5 x 10.8 inches

Lanvin Readies “Happy” Les 10 Ans Collection | Line Celebrates Alber Elbaz’s Decade Milestone

Posted on: Jun 16

Lanvin Happy Les 10 Ans Collection

Alber Elbaz is celebrating his tenth year at Lanvin with the release of the “Happy” Les 10 Ans capsule collection.

There’s no risk of forgetting the years of Elbaz’s tenure, because the range features 10 versions of Lanvin’s iconic Happy bag, 10 pairs of shoes, and 10 dramatic pieces of jewelry. The items are grouped in trios, with a purse, piece of jewelry, and pair of shoes all united by a common theme. With themes including animal print, tulle and pearls, crocodile patchwork, and diamante heart, the line offers many distinct looks. You could wear them altogether as Lanvin intends, but I think they’d look much more chic as single statement pieces.

An official description of the line states that it looks to express “the modernity of the house’s emblematic styles and a certain couture-style refinement in the fabrics, colors, and finishing details.” Do you think it’s achieved all that?

If you’ve fallen for the line, you may want to start saving now. Lanvin goodies never come cheaply, and with prices for the “Happy” Les 10 Ans starting at ₤340 this collection is no exception. You’ll find them at Lanvin’s flagship stores around the world and its online boutique this September.

Steve Madden BVexie Cross-Body Bag | Bohemian Fringed Brown Suede Purse

Posted on: Jun 16

Steve Madden BVexie Cross-Body BagSteve Madden has fun with fringe with this BVexie Cross-Body Bag.

The BVexie is the epitome of bohemian chic, with its soft suede body and long, relaxed fringing. It takes us back to the free love period of the late 60s, although it’s got a few contemporary perks that modern girls should appreciate.

It’s got several interior pockets, including one large enough for a smart phone. That’s a lovely plus as so many designers still create pockets too small for these ubiquitous modern devices.

The BVexie’s so petite that it won’t weigh you down, but its soft fabric walls should stretch to accommodate a wallet, some essential cosmetics and keys, and even a small water bottle. The long strap is also adjustable so you can convert the BVexie from a cross-body to a shoulder bag depending on your mood.

The BVexie is too small to become part of your everyday wardrobe, but it’s ideal for hitting up summer festivals and coastal cafes. And it costs just $48, which is a steal for any suede purse.

More Features of This Steve Madden Fringed Cross-Body Bag

  • Top zip closure
  • Fully lined interior
  • Measures 10.5 x 9.25 inches
  • Also available in black
