Jason Wu Designs for Target | New Affordable Fashion Range for Spring

Posted on: Oct 3

Jason WuIf you missed out on scoring one of the Missoni for Target goodies don’t fret. The affordable department store chain is following up that monster diffusion line with one by Michelle Obama’s favorite designer, Jason Wu.

Just like Wu’s signature line, the Target range will be inspired by the feminine fashions of the swinging sixties. It’s set to feature apparel items, handbags, and scarves affordable priced between $20 and $60. That top end is still dirt cheap for something like the dress shown in the sketch Wu’s released. It’s also significantly more affordable than anything in Wu’s signature range. Color me excited!

Wu said it was “incredible” partnering with Target for the collection, and that he can hardly wait to bring his affordable designs to women across America. I’m sure they also can’t wait to get their hands on them!

The Jason Wu for Target collection will hit its American stores and website on February 5. Make sure to mark it in your calendar, as I don’t expect these items to hang around for too long! Do you think we’ll see Mrs. Obama joining the queue at her local Target store? And will you be lining up with her to get your hands on these inexpensive Jason Wu goodies?

Paco Mena Kalha Clutch | Turquoise Satin Rosette Purse

Posted on: Oct 3

Paco Mena Kahla ClutchI don’t mean to scare you, but it’s probably time to start thinking about Christmas gifts. Paco Mena can help you avoid that last minute panic with this Kalha clutch. It even comes ready to give with its own bow!

The structured crystal accented bow makes this purse feel just like a present. It stops short of feeling like a novelty though, preferring to stay on the right side of whimsical. The turquoise color helps it feel a bit more playful. Traditionalists may be disappointed that Paco Mena only offers this unusual choice, but I think it forces us to step outside our comfort zone. Just imagine how that bright flash of blue would work against your favorite black cocktail dress!

The Kalha’s barrel shape is long but relatively narrow. That length helps it hold a few more items than the average evening purse, but only if you know how to pack it right. The storage space is slightly compromised by the chain strap, but its inclusion isn’t something we want to quibble about!

If you’re considering the Kalha, its affordable price tag might tip you over the edge. At $63 this Paco Mena clutch is reasonably priced for an evening purse with so much style.

More Features of This Paco Mena Bow Clutch

  • Magnetic closure
  • Satiny lining
  • A chain strap with a 16 inch drop
  • Measures 4.25 x 10.25 x 1.75 inches
  • Made in China

Ralph Lauren Releases New Ricky 33 Bag | Limited Edition Breast Cancer Charity Purse

Posted on: Oct 3

Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Ricky BagRalph Lauren hopes to inspire the imagination of luxury lovers with his limited edition Ricky 33 handbag. All proceeds from the sale of the opulent calfskin purse will benefit the Pink Pony Fund, an arm of the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation which helps breast cancer charities around the world.

The new Ricky is made from superior burnished black calfskin. However it wouldn’t be a breast cancer charity bag without a pop of the cause’s signature color. This luxury bag is lined with sweet pink fabric and a removable pink belt affixes the hang tag. It will set you back a substantial $3750. At least the money goes to charity, right?

The release of the new Ricky is well timed to correspond with October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s one of a swag of charity items released to raise money for the cause, but its quality and lack of obvious pink helps to set it apart.

Most of the breast cancer charity purses are crafted from cheap materials to make them attainable to women with all budgets. But this one looks to capture a different sector of the market, the girls who value quality above all else. I think it’s a smart move from Ralph Lauren to target this often overlooked sector in his charity effort. What do you think of the release of this new Ricky?

You’ll find the new Ricky bag exclusively at Ralph Lauren’s stores, including its website.

Oryany Handbags Zahara Cross-Body Bag | Navy Blue Leather Handbag

Posted on: Oct 3

Oryany Zahara Cross-Body BagFor years we’ve heard that gray is the new black. But as I look at this lovely Zahara cross-body from Oryany, I wonder whether navy blue is more deserving of that honor!

The navy blue leather really is lovely. I can imagine it easily slotting into any wardrobe, and attracting many more admiring gazes than tired old basic black. Oryany’s used the skin well here. The design is clean and sophisticated, with only a few well-placed seams to emphasize the handbag’s lines. The longer than average zipper pulls add a bit more style to this sophisticated design.

The Zahara is a larger cross-body than most on the market, but its uncomplicated finish ensures it doesn’t feel overwhelming. The space is well appointed too, with a pair of open pockets for gadgets and another two zippered pouches for holding valuables. Two interior zip pockets is very generous, especially considering there’s another one on the back of the bag.

This Zahara bag is so well made and timeless, I expected to pay much more than the $328 Oryany is asking. I’m certainly not complaining about the low price though!

More Features of This Oryany Handbags Leather Cross-Body Bag

  • Cotton canvas lined interior
  • A single adjustable strap with a 16 to 25 inch drop
  • Measures 11.5 x 12.5 x 3 inches
  • Made in China

Oroton Henri Satchel | Brown Pebbled Leather Logo Handbag

Posted on: Oct 2

Oroton Henri SatchelAustralia’s Oroton label epitomizes sophistication and style. But all it takes is one overdone element to take a beautiful bag like the Henri Satchel from gorgeous to gaudy.

Perhaps that summation is a bit harsh, but it’s disappointing to see a label become tackier over time. Oroton has become famous for its elegant O logo. Just like Oprah Winfrey, all it takes is this letter to brand the fashion house’s bags. However with the new collection the label has added cursive script to the mix. It’s not a bad logo, but it’s nowhere near as refined as the more minimalist approach it took in the past.

The overdone logo has disappointed me, but if you look past it the Henri really is beautiful. It’s made from oily pebbled grain leather, which will only look better and get softer as it ages. Its curves and front flap make it feel like a sophisticated messenger, although it’s much smaller than that style tends to be.

The mid-sized dimensions may disappoint packrats, but I think they make the Henri appear more up market. There’s the space for everything you really need in the fully lined interior, which is frankly all we can ask for.

At $495 the price is certainly right for a bag of this quality. I just hope that in future Oroton remembers that when it comes to branding, less is more.

More Features of This Oroton Logo Satchel

  • A leather and chain adjustable shoulder strap
  • Snap closure
  • Measures 12.8 x 9.1 x 3 inches

Isabel Toledo Shows Payless Collection | Designer’s New Spring Bags & Shoes

Posted on: Oct 2

Isabel Toledo Runway ShowIsabel Toledo has debuted her new spring collection for Payless ShoeSource with her first runway show in more than a decade. The designer took to the catwalk last Thursday in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to celebrate her new accessories line, her sixth for the budget retailer.

The range features nine different pairs of shoes and two new handbag styles. The footwear colletion is casual but cute, with espadrilles, beach boots, and a modern take on the iconic fisherman sandals. I’ll bet your father never wears anything as chic as these shoes when he drops a line! The shoes also feature a range of different heel heights, so there are pairs for wearing during the day and rocking once the summer sun sets.

But Toledo says that the “big splashes of delicious sunset colors” are what really makes these shoes perfect for the season. “Color on your feet is the newest way to update your spring wardrobe,” she explained.

The handbag range isn’t as extensive, but the color-blocked linen Tear Drop tote and linen and raffia Riviera tote should easily coordinate with the rest of the range.

The new Isabel Toledo collection will hit Payless ShoeSource stores across America, including its website, in February 2012.

O’Neill Courtney Shoulder Bag | Large Gray Studded Synthetic Handbag

Posted on: Oct 2

O'Neill Courtney SatchelIn recent years we’ve seen O’Neill evolving from a casual surf brand to a fashion label for all seasons. When once it exclusively produced beach bags, today it makes bags like the Courtney that can work all year round. I appreciate the label’s move towards more fashion forward styles, but sadly I don’t think the Courtney is one of its best.

It’s almost as if O’Neill decided it wanted to make a bag with studs and forgot about the rest. The pyramid studs aren’t bad. They’re a bit chunky for my taste, but they’re applied with restraint in a band towards the base. However the rest of the bag is frankly a bit blah.

The dark gray synthetic isn’t a bad leather substitute. It won’t fool any fashionistas, but happily it doesn’t have that telltale sheen we see on many synthetics. Sadly though, it’s also ultimately forgettable. So too is the shape, which while serviceable doesn’t exactly excite me.

The interior is also disappointing. While it’s luxuriously large, its single zippered pocket isn’t enough. This bag will require regular clean outs to keep the clutter at bay.

But it is very cheap at $44. And that affordable bottom line may be enough to convince stud lovers.

More Features of This O’Neill Studded Shoulder Bag

  • Black fabric lined interior
  • Dual shoulder straps
  • Measures 5 x 15.5 x 12.5 inches

Tommy Hilfiger’s Americans in Paris Totes | Limited Edition Designer Bags for CFDA

Posted on: Oct 1

Tommy Hilfiger Americans in Paris Totes

Paris Fashion Week is in full swing, and American designer Tommy Hilfiger is celebrating. He’s teamed up with ten former Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund winners for a range of tote bags.

Acclaimed designers like Billy Reid, Simon Spurr, Sophie Theallet, Eddie Borgo, and Prabal Gurung have all lent prints to the limited edition line, which is appropriately called Americans in Paris. I particularly love Ohne Titel’s red and blue Rorschach Test and Pamela Love’s very regal looking France meets the United States crest. Which one’s floating your boat?

I’ve always said if that you’re paying any more than $100 for a simple tote bag, then you’re probably paying too much. So I was thrilled to see all the bags in this range are priced at $98. That’s really reasonable considering their limited edition status, but it also means they’re likely to sell out quick.

If you’ve got your eye on one I suggest heading to one of Tommy Hilfiger’s flagship stores in New York, London, Milan, and of course, Paris pronto. If you’re wavering it’s also worth noting that 100% of the net profits from each sale will go back to the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund.

Nine West Sky Dive Shopper | Medium Quilted Gold Synthetic Purse

Posted on: Oct 1

Nine West Sky Dive ShopperNine West turns up the glitz with this Sky Dive shopper.

The shiny gold finish on this shopper makes it difficult to ignore. Quilting ordinarily adds richness to any surface, but here it creates a puffiness that calls to mind winter bomber jackets. It’s not meant to be taken too seriously, but it is intended to command attention.

For what it is, I don’t mind the finish on this shopper. It’s loud and flashy and full of fun. While it’s not to my taste, I can appreciate its boldness. I’m less enthusiastic about the black straps, which while long and flat enough to be functional appear tacked on.

Nine West calls the Sky Dive a medium shopper, but it’s certainly large enough to carry everything most of us really need, and then some. Its polyester lining is again on the cheap side, but the interior does have pockets in all the right places. And there’s a little wristlet inside too, which you could use as a coin purse or even a clutch once the sun goes down.

For $79 we’re getting a lot of value from Nine West here, even if we’re not getting a lot of class.

  • Magnetic closure
  • Dual handles with an 8.5 inch drop
  • Measures 11 x 15.5 x 5.5 inches
  • Made in China
