Old fashioned styling meets contemporary fashion in this unusual Gothic clutch from Timmy Woods.

You’ll have to look past the leopard print to see the Gothic influence. Its sculpted scrolling body calls to mind the decorations of old world cathedrals. But they’re heavily obscured by those wild black spots. Personally I feel the purse would have been stronger without the animal print, and the tassel for that matter, but there’s no denying these accents help it stand out.

This Gothic clutch is small, and as it’s made from wood overstuffing it is out of the question. The clasp will simply pop open if you put it under pressure. It’s a shame to see some of that space taken up by a strap, especially one so unsightly. The black rope complements the Gothic’s spots nicely, and it should feel comfortable on your shoulder. However there’s just no getting around its tackiness.

Personally I think $298 is too much to spend on such a novelty clutch, even if it is signed by the designer. But its unique styling might make it worth the splurge if it’s tickled your fancy.

Texan quilting boutique Oma’s Quilts has added quilted handbags to its collection.

Oma’s Quilts offers its handbags in range of colors and patterns. They follow the lead of established handbag designers like Vera Bradley and Lily Waters with their homespun charms and folky prints. Some feature patchwork finishes, while others are made with just one material. At this stage there’s just the one style, the Bella Taylor. It looks like the love child of a hobo and a bucket with its rounded edges and clean lines. It’s nice enough, but hopefully we’ll get a bit more choice in the coming seasons.

Oma’s Quilts was launched by two pals attempting to decorate their home. They were frustrated by the range of goods on offer, so looked to create quality homewares that didn’t break the bank. After admiring the quilted handbags of their friends, the team at Oma’s decided it was time to create their own. Tignanello reminds us that it’s hip to be square with this shoulder bag of the same name.

Its ’80s inspired moniker doesn’t come from geek chic looks, but from its striking geometric stitching. Square panels help to make this shoulder bag’s basic black finish seem a bit more interesting. The squares are softened a bit by this shoulder bag’s rounded corners and tassel accent. I’m not sure the latter was really necessary, but it’s easily removable if you prefer a cleaner look.

I really love the stitching, so I’m disappointed to see the back is much plainer. There is a long zippered pocket though, and a spacious slip one, so it’s hard to get too critical. These pouches complement the open ones we see on the side. These exterior pockets are more than we see inside most bags! The interior is just as smart, with a central pocket dividing the space into three handy sections. More pockets in the side walls see we’re really spoiled for storage room.

Tignanello never steps too far outside the box, but it’s played just enough to grab my interest this time, especially for the price. $149 is very cheap for a real leather handbag, especially one as stylish and smart as this.

You’ve got to admire Tianni’s gusto, as few handbag designers dare make a bag like the Sofia.

This is one of those handbags you’ll other love or loathe. Its hot pink synthetic body is obnoxious enough, but the red snake-printed accents bring another layer of loud. Tiny squares of the python print decorate the corners, and another strip of it cuts across the top.

The choice to pair red and pink is certainly bold. It’s not to my taste, but nothing on this bag really suits my more sophisticated sensibility. Instead it’s made for girls who dare to be different, the ones who march to the beat of their own drums.

Say what you want about its exterior, but it’s hard to fault the Sofia on a practical level. It offers plenty of storage space and most of the functional features of a high end purse. Sure its pockets might not be reinforced, and its lining might feel a little cheap, but at least those features are there.

I can’t say that I agree with Tianni’s assertion that the Sofia has “just the right look for any outing,” but at least it’s cheap enough for brave fashionistas to get their money’s worth.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month still has two weeks to go, but already some designers are looking ahead to Movember. During the month of November plenty of lads around the world will be sporting facial hair to raise money for prostate cancer research. It seems The SAK might have been taking design lessons from local senior citizens when it created the Stellaris Tote.

This tote’s crocheted body has a homely old world charm about it. It’s given a bit of a modern kick though with its scalloped edges, which are rendered in a slightly darker fawn hue. This tote looks like it’s made from wool but it’s actually crafted from polypropylene, The SAK’s current fiber of choice. This high tech material feels soft to the touch, but it’s actually very durable. You might have seen it used in carpets and ropes; applying this tough material to fashion makes a lot of sense.

Metal rings near the straps give the design a little attitude, although we’d never call a pale knitted bag edgy. They do balance the style though, offsetting some of the softness just enough.

It’s easy to suggest that we could have made the Stellaris if we sat down for a few hours with our nan. But for just $79, is it really worth our time? That’s an affordable price for such a quirky tote bag.

Free Endearment has released a hot pink version of its popular Dana clutch to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Dana purse is an accordion style clutch, so it packs a greater organizational punch than your average evening purse. It’s made entirely from cowhide, and lined with striped bengaline fabric.

The generously sized interior features an array of open and zippered pockets. A magnetic closure hidden underneath the flap keeps everything secure. You can tuck the chain and leather strap away inside, or remove it altogether if you want to avoid the clutter. The Dana is also sold with a dust bag to protect it while it’s in storage.

Considering its high quality materials and practical design, the Dana is competitively priced at $365. A generous 30% of that price will benefit American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodges. These facilities offer cancer patients and caregivers free accommodation during treatment away from their homes. This specific initiative isn’t one I’ve heard a lot about, which of course means it doesn’t often receive the funding of other high profile schemes. It sounds like a great program though, and I’m thrilled Free Endearment has taken an interest in it.

There’s a whole lot of pink breast cancer purses on the market at the moment, but I think the Dana is one of the most impressive.

The Jesse B. Collection claims to have just what you need for the new season with this appropriately named Autumn clutch.

This tweed purse’s earthy colors mimic the season’s changing leaves. The Autumn’s shape is familiar to Jesse B. Collection fans, but happily its hues aren’t its only defining feature. Rather than the stiff interfacing we see on the label’s most recent styles, the Autumn has a soft flexible body. Personally I think this makes it perfect for hand-held clutching, although we can use the long leather handles when we feel like going hands-free.

These handles are another luxury seen on only a few Jesse B. Collection clutches. You’d think they’d push the price up, but just $29.99 it doesn’t seem like we’re paying a premium for this perk.

As with so many Jesse B. Collection bags, what you see is really what you get. It’s spacious as clutch purses go, but its interior is really simple. There’s a slip pocket inside, but that’s no more or less than most fashion designers offer.

This Autumn clutch isn’t the most luxurious on the market, but its seasonal shades and affordable price make a pretty irresistible combination.

Swiss label Bally gave media and fashion insiders a sneak peek at its romantic new spring/summer 2012 collection at a presentation in Milan last week.

The range is feminine yet modern, with its clean sportswear silhouettes and flower petal decorated finishes. The line, which the company has described as “couture-luxe,” looks to pay tribute to Bally’s 160 years of leather heritage along with its native Swiss landscapes and culture.

The apparel range features knee-length coats, A-line dresses, and cotton-jersey T-shirts with padded leather panels at the shoulders. There are also shoes with heels of all heights, from platforms and kitten heels to sorbet-colored slides.

But of course we all want to know about the handbags. The purse range features three new shapes: the pouch, the A-frame, and the box clutch. They’re rendered in pale earthy tones including eau de nil, biscuit, and peony and embellished with lace-embroidered petals, strings of leather sequins, and mirrored shards. In a nod to the brand’s Swiss heritage, a cute mountain goat motif dangles from each new purse.

The new spring/summer collection is Bally’s second with joint creative directors Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler at the helm. Do you like the sound of their latest works?

Tepper Jackson takes care of your cosmetics with this fun Aero Dot purse.

In many ways this is more of the same from the designer. We’ve got a retro print, a coated canvas finish, and a simple design. Check, check, and check. But I feel the combination works here better than it usually does.

Coated canvas isn’t very luxurious, but it is easy to keep clean. That’s perfect for a purse that will be around nail polish, lipstick, mascara, and other messy essentials. With just a damp cloth you can wipe away any spill from the outside. The interior is lined in black canvas which will simply hide any marks.

The colored spots are lots of fun, but not very easy to coordinate with an outfit. That’s OK here too, because this cosmetics purse will spend much of its life inside a larger, and likely more conservative, tote.

The simple interior isn’t ideal, but it’s also not surprising for a purse which costs so little. In a perfect world there’d be clear pockets for separating makeup and elasticized loops for holding mascara and brushes, but we’d pay a premium for those extras.

At just $22 this Tepper Jackson cosmetics purse is a fun, if not all that luxurious, way to carry your make-up.
