Fendi shows the other designers how colorblocking should be done with this Chameleon Capra duffel bag.

Colorblocking often looks gimmicky and overly trend conscious, but not here. Fendi has carefully chosen complementary earth tones, and made most of the bag that delicious olive-brown. The fawn and gray hues are used sparingly so the effect doesn’t appear too overpowering.

The colorblocking finish is complemented by golden Fendi logos at the handles. These subtle metal accents are much more sedate than the branding Fendi typically uses, and the bag looks richer for it.

The only thing I’m unsure about is the bag’s shape. It’s unique but it slouches awkwardly around the sides. The last thing we want from a Fendi bag is awkward.

I appreciate the practical design, which has just enough extras to make us feel pampered. The platform base helps the bag sit up straight once it’s set down, while the metal studs ensure its leather stays protected. The handles are a shade too short for my liking, but Fendi helps us out with a detachable shoulder strap.

Fendi bags never come cheaply, so the Chameleon’s $2420 price tag shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s not perfect, and at this price it probably should be, but I wouldn’t dismiss it if you’re in the mood for some retail therapy.

Creating a few clutch purses seems to have ignited Christopher Kane’s passion for accessories. The Scottish designer is planning to create a complete handbag collection that can serve women well throughout the year.

While the accessories promise to be classic, they’ll also have a contemporary edge which builds on the liquid clutch he created for his recent fall/winter line.

Kane told Vogue that the acclaimed purse reminded him of the pencil cases he used to own as a child.

“This made us think that we should build on that platform, and create that bag that is a great classic and can go from season to season,” he explained.

Of course it’s early days at this point. Right now Kane is toying with the idea, but it may take some time before we see the concept realized. However I’ve always felt that Christopher Kane’s select accessories were the highlights of his fashion collections, so the thought of a complete handbag range makes me a bit excited.

However it remains to be seen whether Kane can sustain his brilliance across a complete accessories line. It’s one thing to make a few choice pieces, and another to make several show stoppers.

Jason Wu takes a classic approach to the genre with this doctor’s bag.

This is a textbook Doctor’s Bag, although I’m not sure I can imagine my local general practitioner carrying it! Its black leather isn’t head-turning, but it is first class. The neutral skin is complemented beautifully by the rich looking golden hardware.

The push-lock closure opens to reveal a relatively spacious interior. This handbag’s structured design means we can’t push it past its capacity. However it should be able to handle the important things with some careful packing. The variety of zip and open patch pockets should make organizing it much easier. Wu complements the typical short handle with a more user-friendly shoulder strap.

There are a lot of aspects to like about this doctor’s bag but the price isn’t one of them. At $2195 it’s probably a bit more expensive than it should be, but its classic good looks and superior craftsmanship should help to justify the splurge.

Rebecca Minkoff serves up her signature sophisticated style for new moms with this Marissa diaper bag.

This spacious tote has many of the hallmarks of Minkoff’s modern accessories. The designer’s fans will note the signature circle quilting and delicate golden studs. The finish makes the electric blue leather look extra special, but is it really suitable for being around babies? I can’t imagine exposing the luxury skin to sticky fingers and spit, can you?

At least Rebecca Minkoff has thought of all the features new moms need. There are pockets in the front and back and on the sides for the items we want at our fingertips. There’s also many more inside, including five elasticized ones for holding bottles. I also appreciate the long shoulder straps and the detachable cross-body one. They’re all so user-friendly, just the things moms on the go need. The only thing missing is a change pad, which is a fairly major oversight. These emergency pads are staples of diaper bags; Minkoff really should have known better.

The materials that Minkoff has used probably makes this baby tote worth its $395. However that’s an awful lot for new moms with stretched budgets to spend on this kind of accessory. I’d only indulge if you intend to carry this bag after your little ones have grown.

Gucci has opened the doors of its revamped Bond Street boutique. The London flagship store has undergone a facelift just in time for holiday shopping.

The new store features cutting-edge décor and a comprehensive range of apparel items and Gucci’s entire handbag collection, from classic styles to more recent designs. The on trend accessory shades of white, candy apple red, and plum ensure the store’s interior is already looking a lot like Christmas!

London shoppers certainly haven’t missed out during the renovations. The Bond Street store is one of seven Gucci outlets in the area. However the refurbishment should see the flagship store again become Gucci’s most popular with Londoners. After all, while it’s not the only Gucci boutique in the neighborhood it is the only one offering Gucci’s Made to Measure service. This customization service should prove even more popular as Christmas approaches.

Bond Street has been one of London’s most fashionable shopping districts since the 18th century. These days the shopping strip is home to a host of high-end designers including Jimmy Choo, Prada, Chanel, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and of course Gucci. It sounds like stopping by could be detrimental to your credit card!

Whiting & Davis walks on the wild side with this bold Gatopardo cross-body bag.

The Gatopardo features the label’s signature metal mesh, but its animal print gives it a more modern feel. Animal prints are classic, but I’m not always a fan. Done wrong they can look downright trashy. But Whiting & Davis gets it right here. The spots have an abstract quality, almost like they’ve been melted, which makes them more edgy and interesting.

The Gatopardo isn’t entirely a success though. The fringing along the bottom seems frankly unnecessary. The design would have looked much cleaner and more compelling without it. Remember Whiting & Davis, less is so often more.

The dimensions are just right; we can fit everything we really need inside it but we’re not tempted to load ourselves up. The choice of carrying options is also impressive. We can use it like a clutch or attach the strap, which works for over the shoulder wear or cross-body carrying once it’s extended. The only disappointment is the lack of pockets. The single slip is probably all it takes to stay organized, but I still feel shortchanged.

It’s hard to get too critical for the price though. $135 isn’t a lot to spend on a purse with so much sass.

The Australian city of Brisbane has welcomed the first of two Chanel stores. The apparel and accessories store opened its doors in Queens Plaza this week. It will be joined by a Chanel fragrance and beauty boutique next week.

To celebrate the launch, the fashion house has created a limited edition quilted clutch inspired by the Queensland city. Its rich blue hue celebrates the capital’s ocean location, while its floral accent pays tribute to the city’s many gardens. It’s no Cooktown Orchid, Queensland’s state flower, but it’s very cute. A plaque reading “exclusive edition for Brisbane” will no doubt make these purses very covetable. They certainly don’t come cheaply though, or easily. You’ll need to add your name to the waiting list, and then fork over a cool $5490 for the privilege of owning one.

Of course, no one shops in the Queen Street Mall if they don’t want to spend some serious cash. The pair of Chanel stores are keeping company with the likes of Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Bally, and Tiffany & Co. You’ll need a bulging bank balance to even contemplate Christmas shopping there!

The new Chanel stores prove Brisbane is holding its own in the fashion stakes. I wouldn’t suggest it’s caught up to Melbourne or Brisbane just yet, but it’s definitely evolving into a stylish city!

Chanel Clutches on eBay

Tory Burch stamps her trademark sense of style onto her Idina cosmetics case.

This sophisticated make-up purse is immediately identifiable as one of the American designer’s creations. Its lines are clean, and its logo medallion stands proudly against the purse. Her fans may be disappointed that leather only borders the branding, but it actually makes a lot of sense. By choosing coated canvas rather than a more luxurious fabric Tory Burch has ensured that make-up stains can be easily wiped away.

The colorblocked finish makes the canvas seem much more appealing. The top has the fabric’s natural ivory tone, while the base has a more playful hue. It’s pink in this instance, but we could also choose yellow or turquoise.

The Idina’s interior is very simple. What you see is what you get. I wish there were little pockets or elasticized loops to keep our make-up must haves in order, but for this price I wouldn’t necessarily expect it.

Given its basic materials and basic design though, I can’t help thinking Tory Burch is charging a premium for her name. $75 isn’t expensive for the average Tory Burch purse, but it’s a bit steep for one that will spend most of its life inside a larger tote.

Kate Spade serves up a purse to brighten up the cold winter days with this Confectionary Anastasia Frame Clutch.

You’ll either love or loathe the large epoxy stones in all colors of the rainbow which decorate this framed purse. I’m finding their cheery hues difficult to resist, but the girls who prefer a monochromatic color scheme may find it harder to get on board. That’s a shame because this purse would look perfect paired with a little black dress.

I concede that the stones don’t look very high class. In fact I’d even go so far as to suggest the fruity colors make the gemstones seem cheap. While not everything has to look high class, it probably should for $375. That goes double when it’s paired with high quality 14-karat gold-plated hardware.

In spite of it all though, I really like this purse. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and it still manages to get the job done. The serpentine chain is a handy addition, and the woven dot lining just darling. I think I’ve found my next Christmas party purse!
