Alexander Wang does what he does best with the Jane Shoulder Bag.

Critics might accuse this bag of simply being more of the same, but I appreciate the way it fits with Wang’s creative vision. The New York designer does his best work when he’s celebrating the casual coolness of his urban backyard. We’ve seen him stepping outside that box now and again, and the results are never quite as pleasing.

The Jane sees Wang back in his zone, playing with motorcycle cool black leather and eye-popping silver hardware. The lambskin is sumptuously soft, so it provides a brilliant balance to the heavy metal. I love the Jane’s biker chic appearance and appreciate that Wang doesn’t stoop to clichés to achieve it. Without studs or grommets, the designer’s ensured this shoulder bag will defy the trends.

Its aesthetics have a practical purpose too. All that hardware comes from the zips securing its pockets and main compartment and the dog clips that support its shoulder strap. There really is a place for everything, and just the right amount of space for a day in the big smoke.

The Jane’s cool urban vibe should suit modern city slickers and anyone inspiring to live that life. At $760 we probably can’t call it a bargain, but it’s a good entry-level designer purse.

Cashed up heiress Tamara Ecclestone can own anything her heart desires, which must make her a headache to buy presents for. But her stockbroker boyfriend Omar Khyami refused to be phased. He presented Tamara with a metallic exotic Hermes Birkin bag, worth an estimated £80k, to mark her 28th birthday.

A girl can never have too many Birkins after all!

It seems Khyami’s gesture was spot on, as Ecclestone quickly took to Twitter to express her joy at the gesture.

“Omar is officially the best birthday present giver ever will be wearing it to my birthday dinner tonight love love love it,” she tweeted.

And as promised, Ecclestone took the handbag along to a dinner at London’s acclaimed and outrageously expensive Zuma restaurant that night. It seems only the best will do for this loved up twosome! Although we hardly expected Ecclestone to celebrate her birthday with a night on the couch in her jim jams!

We’ve long been jealous of the heiress. She’s got model good looks, an attentive beau, a killer accessories collection, bucketloads of money, and the sort of privileged lifestyle we all dream about. And now, there’s yet another Birkin in her collection. You can’t blame us for an attack of the green-eyed monster, can you?

It seems Jessica Simpson is seeing the world through rose-colored glasses since giving birth to baby Maxwell. That’s the only explanation for her naming this fairly ordinary satchel Unforgettable.

Don’t get me wrong; this isn’t a bad satchel. It just struggles to live up to expectations. I quite like the leopard printed panels near the straps, and the sweet feminine bow detail. But its synthetic finish feels a bit cheap, as we might expect at this price point. The seams also aren’t finished as nicely as we’d see on a truly unforgettable purse.

This beige hue known as sand is really the pick of them. The bolder options, including flamingo pink and orange, are just too much. And I wouldn’t even consider the snake embossed leopard printed one. It’s well and truly jumped the shark!

The Unforgettable is quite a smart satchel though, with the right amount of space for everyday use and a convenient trio of internal pockets. The attachable cross-body strap adds extra versatility.

This Jessica Simpson satchel performs admirably, especially for the money. At $88 it represents real value. Just don’t expect it to make the lasting impression its name suggests.

Ashley Greene has reprised her role as the face of DKNY for the fashion house’s fall 2012 campaign.

The Twilight actress looks very chic in the advertisement, which sees her wearing an on-trend flared dress and carrying a large top handled satchel. It’s not just the Manhattan location that sees this commercial channeling Mad Men.

The New York location makes a lot of sense, as DKNY says its cool weather collection is made for busy city girls.

“Sweet and strong, pretty and tough, smart and street, this season’s campaign voyeuristically and strikingly documents a slice of Ashley Greene’s life in the city,” the label’s press release reads.

The line shows DKNY all grown up. Black features prominently, but animal prints and florals help provide a bit of pop. Leather’s also been used heavily in accessories like handbags and belts, as well as apparel items including skirts and jacket sleeves.

Peter Lindbergh hasn’t reinvented the wheel here, but he’s shot a sophisticated advertisement campaign which sells the label’s apparel and accessories, as well as its image, really well. But we’d expect nothing less from the man who’s also photographed marketing materials for elegant fashion houses like Giorgio Armani and Prada.

Leibeskind Berlin lets its materials shine with the Lina.

The Lina’s lush buffalo leather really turned my head. This leather isn’t used often in fashion, which is a real shame. However, perhaps if it were more common bags like the Lina wouldn’t look as fresh! Buffalo is just as strong as cowhide, and as easy to take care of. But its deep rustic grain makes its finish appear much richer. It also doesn’t stretch as easily as calf leather, so we can feel confident utilizing all the space the Lina offers.

The buffalo skin’s rustic look is emphasized with exposed seams. This almost unfinished appearance won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it makes the Lina look especially earthy.

Leibeskind Berlin’s colored its buffalo skin with bold saturated hues. I think this deep aqua would be especially versatile, but the cheerful yellow purse is also hard to resist.

The Lina’s multiple carrying options allow us to easily manage its bulk. The rolled handles can probably slip over your shoulder during summer, but you’ll need the attachable strap once you reach for your winter coat.

It’s just a shame Leibeskind Berlin hasn’t backed up all that space with more pockets. The zippered pocket and cell phone compartment are hardly enough to keep such an enormous interior organized. The lack of metal feet is another glaring omission. Such lush leather really deserves some protection.

But when Leibeskind Berlin charges just $279 for such a beautiful bag, I feel like I’m nit-picking over its flaws. That’s not a lot to spend on a hobo of such quality, even if it’s not perfect.

This is a promising start, but hopefully it’s just the beginning of the collection. I’d love to see Neiman Marcus releasing personalized backpacks and totes for days spent sightseeing, and customized carry-on bags and suitcases for the journey. What about you?

Celebrate what’s left of the season with Cleobella’s playful Sirena tote.

Woven raffia bags are a dime a dozen, but the Sirena’s textured finish is better than most. I love the way Cleobella’s used a different stitch around the top and base to create some gentle interest. The naturally toned color is a bit pedestrian but also very versatile. It’s livened up a bit with bold leather handles and trim. I love the fresh look of these green accents, but the bag’s also available with cute neon pink details.

The Sirena’s enormous, but I’d be careful before loading it up. Raffia is notoriously fragile, especially once it’s been exposed to salty sea air. It’s best used for carrying light but bulky items, like flip flops and beach towels, rather than your fresh produce home from the markets. The open top design allows us to easily carry a few more items, but it also compromises security.

With a glut of similar bags on the market, the Sirena’s probably a bit too expensive at $172. Some labels provide all leather bags for that money after all. However with summer coming to an end, many retailers are offering great discounts. Snap it up and it’ll make a great beach bag for the rest of this season, and the next time warm weather rolls around.

Vera Wang’s youth line, Princess Vera Wang, will be available exclusively through Kohl’s stores next month.

The youth sizing probably excludes all but the most petite adults from indulging in the Princess Vera Wang apparel items, but the young at heart can always enjoy the line’s accessories. These include a pink quilted clutch purse and other girly handbags, bow-decorated shoes, and funky earrings and necklaces.

In a press release, the new juniors’ line was said to capture Wang’s “vision of playful sophistication and incorporate many of the styling elements and design characteristics for which she is best known, including mixed media and artful whimsy.“

Cosmetics and bridal jewelry will join the line in the future. Cosmetics products make a lot of sense, but bridal jewelry seems a little premature for a collection targeted at teens and college kids. If the pieces aren’t too over the top they could probably suit party wear, but the naming of the category is a bit strange, don’t you think?

Look for Princess Vera Wang goodies at Kohl’s stores from July 9. Prices are expected to be affordable in line with Wang’s Simple Vera collection, which is also available from Kohl’s. Are you tempted to raid the youth section for some of these teen targeted products?

Michael Kors has created an everyday bag for all seasons in the Layton.

The Layton’s a great all-rounder. It’s a good looker that doesn’t follow trends. Its black leather will never fall out of favor, and its quality is excellent for the money. I love the way the golden hardware pops against the dark skin. Its design isn’t all that interesting, but that helps it be the ultimate chameleon, able to blend seamlessly into most any situation.

The Layton’s exterior pockets point to its exceptional practicality. The two zippered pockets are easy to spot, but there are also four spacious slip ones built into the exterior. Its generously sized interior is also well appointed with a roomy zippered pocket and four slip pockets for gadgets and sunglasses.

The Layton’s classically cool styling is nice, but that’s likely not the reason you’ll invest in it. This is an aspirational piece designed to capture the imagination of girls on a budget. At $448 it’s not expensive in comparison to high end designer goods, but it’s not a bargain either. It represents real value for anyone who love their bags to last, and that makes it worth saving for.

Personally I think this predictable hue makes this simple purse seem really pedestrian, but there’s no doubting its versatility. The quality of that natural grained leather is also exceptional, no matter what color you choose. You’d hardly know it came from a lower-priced diffusion line!

The Bluma is on the small side though. It’s refreshing to step out without being weighed down by worldy goods, but some girls may struggle to fit everything they need inside it. It’ll probably work best as a bag for running errands and taking coffee breaks rather than an everyday essential.

At $395, the Bluma is probably priced where it deserves to be. Its lush leather certainly warrants that price tag. It’ll depend on your budget whether it’s still too expensive for an occasional piece.
